Book excerpt: "Health and Education" by Charles Kingsley Charles Kingsley was a broad church priest of the Church of England, a university professor, social reformer, historian, novelist, and poet. However, his thoughts and expertise weren't limited to these fields or his work in Christian socialism. As a man of the cloth, he had a unique perspective on the health and education of the English population. Many people turn to the church for health advice and answers. Through this book, Kingsley gives a thoughtful analysis of the, at the time, current state of society as well as where he thought it was heading.

Download or read book The Female and the Species written by Maureen O'Connor and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describing the Irish as 'female' and 'bestial' is a practice dating back to the twelfth century, while for women, inside and outside of Ireland, their association with children, animals and other 'savages' has had a long history. A link among systems of oppression has been asserted in recent decades by some feminists, but linking women's rights with animal advocacy can be controversial. This strategy responds to the fact that women's inferiority has been alleged and justified by appropriating them to nature, an appropriation that colonialism has also practiced on its racial and cultural others. Nineteenth-century feminists braved such associations, for instance, often asserting vegetarianism as a form of rebellion against the dominant culture. Vegetarianism and animal advocacy have uniquely Irish implications. This study examines a tradition of Irish women writers deploying the 'natural' as a gesture of resistance to paternalist regulation of female energies and as a self-consciously elaborated stage for the performance of Irish identity. They call into question the violent dislocations and disavowals required by figurative practices, particularly when utilizing Irish topography, an already 'unnatural' cultural construct shaped by conflict and suffering.

Download or read book Patriarchy s Creative Resilience written by Michael Kramp and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-02-26 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patriarchy’s Creative Resilience explores the disturbing sustainability of White male supremacy. Kramp traces an imaginative failure and an imaginative success; his focus on British speculative fiction published between 1870 and 1900 demonstrates how even this elastic and wildly inventive literary form remains incapable of promoting non- patriarchal masculinity, and he attributes this inability to the creative resiliency of white male supremacy. He demonstrates the inventive use of diverse resources that we frequently view as custom or uncomplicated history and a versatility that we often dismiss as sheer power. He draws on an archive of late nineteenth- century speculative fiction to detail a versatile patriarchal toolbox, including hegemonic masculinity, control of dangerous women, hyperbolic and sentimental performances of male sovereignty, and reversions to authoritarian, at times violent conduct. He also considers how the classic military strategy of dividing to conquer undergirds all these tactics, inhibiting our creating energies and dynamic collaborations. Various chapters demonstrate the enterprise, ingenuity, and adaptability of patriarchy to refashion and rejustify normalized systems of oppression. While scholars have consistently identified moments and agents of resistance to patriarchal structures by highlighting creativity, resiliency, and resourcefulness, Kramp’s project reveals how patriarchy itself is creative, resilient, and resourceful.

Download or read book The Englishwoman s Review of Social and Industrial Questions written by Janet Horowitz Murray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-19 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Englishwoman’s Review, which published from 1866 to 1910, participated in and recorded a great change in the range of possibilities open to women. The ideal of the magazine was the idea of the emerging emancipated middle-class woman: economic independence from men, choice of occupation, participation in the male enterprises of commerce and government, access to higher education, admittance to the male professions, particularly medicine, and, of course, the power of suffrage equal to that of men. First published in 1985, this seventh volume contains issues from 1874. With an informative introduction by Janet Horowitz Murray and Myra Stark, and an index compiled by Anna Clark, this set is an invaluable resource to those studying nineteenth and early twentieth-century feminism and the women’s movement in Britain.
