Book Health Aid and Infant Mortality

Download or read book Health Aid and Infant Mortality written by Prachi Mishra and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2007-04 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the relationship between health aid and infant mortality, using data from 118 countries between 1973 and 2004. Health aid has a statistically significant effect on infant mortality: doubling per capita health aid is associated with a 2 percent reduction in the infant mortality rate. For the average country, this implies that increasing per capita health aid by US$1.60 per year is associated with 1.5 fewer infant deaths per thousand births. The estimated effect is small, relative to the targets envisioned by the Millennium Development Goals.

Our nation is troubled by rates of teen pregnancies and newborn deaths that are worse than almost all others in the Western world. Science and Babies is a straightforward presentation of the major reproductive issues we face that suggests answers for the public. The book discusses how the clash of opinions on sex and family planning prevents us from making a national commitment to reproductive health; why people in the United States have fewer contraceptive choices than those in many other countries; what we need to do to improve social and medical services for teens and people living in poverty; how couples should "shop" for a fertility service and make consumer-wise decisions; and what we can expect in the futureâ€"featuring interesting accounts of potential scientific advances.

Book Foreign Aid for Development

Download or read book Foreign Aid for Development written by George Mavrotas and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2010-02-25 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign aid is one of the few topics in the development discourse with such an uninterrupted, yet volatile history in terms of interest and attention from academics, policymakers, and practitioners alike. Does aid work in promoting growth and reducing poverty in the developing world? Will a new 'big push' approach accelerate progress towards the Millennium Development Goals or will another opportunity be missed? Can the lessons of almost half a century of aid giving be learnt? These are truly important questions in view of the emerging new landscape in foreign aid and recent developments related to the global financial crisis, which are expected to have far reaching implications for both donors and recipients engaged in this area. Against this shifting aid landscape, there is a pressing need to evaluate progress to date and shed new light on emerging issues and agendas. This volume brings together leading aid experts to review the progress achieved so far, identify the challenges ahead, and discuss the emerging policy agenda in foreign aid. A central conclusion of this important and timely volume is that, since development aid remains crucial for many developing countries, a huge effort is needed from both donors and aid recipients to overcome the inefficiencies and make aid work better for poor people. After all, as global citizens, we have a moral obligation to do the best we can to lift people out of poverty in the developing world. The findings of this book will be of considerable interest to professionals and policymakers engaged in policy reforms in foreign aid, and provide an essential one-stop reference for students of development, international finance, and economics.

Book The Healthy Start Initiative

Download or read book The Healthy Start Initiative written by Meri McCoy-Thompson and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume describes the experiences of each of the 15 rural and urban Healthy Start initiatives. These projects were set up in areas that had infant mortality rates that were 1.5 to 2.5 times the national average. Project locations include major cities such as Chicago, Illinois; Boston, Massachusetts; and Oakland, California, and rural areas in South Carolina and the Plains states. The projects brought together families and community organizations to design and implement new procedures in an intensive effort to reduce the infant mortality rate in their communities by one-half within 5 years. In this report, representatives from each of the projects share the lessons they learned in planning and implementing the Healthy Start initiative to reduce infant mortality. While some speakers discuss unique aspects of their programs, many stress common themes. Recurrent themes in the reports include community involvement, consortia development, management and governance, program initiatives, provider issues, and sustainability. These themes are outlined in the executive summary at the beginning of the volume. (BAC)

Book Health in the United States

Download or read book Health in the United States written by Andrea N. Kopstein and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Trends in health status, health services and health care expenditures in the United States are presented in chart form with supplementary comments. Selected data are categorized by sex and color, and cover such areas as life expectancy, infant mortality rates, people who smoke, utilization of hospitals and doctors, and causes of cost increase. For example, health care now consumes 9.1% of the GNP as compared to 4.5% in 1950; most of those costs were due not to population growth but to an increase in quantity and quality of service.
