Book Living with Loss Healing with Hope

Download or read book Living with Loss Healing with Hope written by Earl A. Grollman and published by Beacon Press. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Living When a Loved One Has Died draws from Jewish wisdom and tradition to provide thoughtful advice on moving through loss with grace and hope Earl Grollman's Living When a Loved One Has Died has brought comfort to more than 250,000 readers. In Living with Loss, Healing with Hope, Grollman speaks directly to mourners of the Jewish faith. By weaving quotations from Jewish writers and philosophers into his comforting and expert prose, Grollman guides readers through the journey of mourning, healing, and hope. A colleague of Grollman's once told him, “Earl, I am not a member of your faith, but if I wanted the soundest emotional and spiritual approach to death, I would be a Jew.” Occasionally quoting from sacred texts as well as Jewish writers and philosophers, Living with Loss, Healing with Hope illuminates Judaism's powerful recognition of the trauma of grief and of the mourner's responsibility eventually to return to the rhythm of life. In a brief final section, the author guides readers through Jewish funeral observances, Shiva, and beyond, and reminds all that these symbolic customs are ‘about change-remembrance, letting go, and moving on.’ “Earl Grollman is still the master of consolation. Every word of this little book is a polished jewel.” —Harold S. Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People

This is mine. I am not a famous athlete or a movie star. I am not a head-liner musician. What I am is seen only on Sunday morning, when people sit in church. I am the music worship leader, but the people didn't see the real me. I was a confused, frustrated, angry and depressed person with low-self esteem, a negative and defeated attitude, and a victim-failure mindset. I was in financial bondage. I carried this emotional baggage with me into my fifties. I lugged it around while I was in paid music ministry in local churches... Like millions of Christians, I was raised in a Christian home with a particular set of beliefs and values that was to be accepted, not challenged. My false belief system, combined with some experiences, hurt me more than helped me, and I am to some degree still paying the consequences. CHAPTER 7, Page 59 The most compelling situation in my life was finding out why, especially as a Christian, I had all of these problems..another compelling factor was how all of this was affecting my family life. I knew it was not supposed to be like it was, and was afraid of the potential negative consequences...everything in my life was just the opposite of what my belief system told me it should be. I either needed to change my beliefs or find out why mine weren't working...Furthermore, my negative strongholds had become traps. BACK COVER This book is for professing Christians who sit in church, looking and acting like everything is okay, when they know it is not. The author speaks form personal experience of wearing an "emotional mask" for 25 years, during which time he was a minister of music in churches, while he struggled with anger, low self-esteem, depression, a defeated attitude, and codependency. This is a biblically-based, self-help recovery book. The author talks about the confusion caused by Scripture taken out of context and religious phrases void of meaning. The book addresses the benefits of Christian counseling, the practical and healing process of recovery, and how to fulfill one's potential and live a life of spiritual victory. Practical steps are given for overcoming anger, low self-esteem, a negative attitude, and codependency. The author tells how a person can make a choice to be happy, and how to develop a disciplined thought life. The book is based on Corinthians 10:4-5, where it says to overcome strongholds by "taking every thought captive to obedience of Christ." You will also gain more awareness of how much wrong thinking from childhood and religious teaching can impact the present, and how self-esteem is important in experiencing God's best.

Book Hope and Healing in Urban Education

Download or read book Hope and Healing in Urban Education written by Shawn Ginwright and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-30 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hope and Healing in Urban Education proposes a new movement of healing justice to repair the damage done by the erosion of hope resulting from structural violence in urban communities. Drawing on ethnographic case studies from around the country, this book chronicles how teacher activists employ healing strategies in stressed schools and community organizations, and work to reverse negative impacts on academic achievement and civic engagement, supporting their students to become powerful civic actors. The book argues that healing a community is a form of political action, and emphasizes the need to place healing and hope at the center of our educational and political strategies. At once a bold, revealing, and nuanced look at troubled urban communities as well as the teacher activists and community members working to reverse the damage done by generations of oppression, Hope and Healing in Urban Education examines how social change can be enacted from within to restore a sense of hope to besieged communities and counteract the effects of poverty, violence, and hopelessness.

As they pursued their dreams--she as a model and he as a lawyer--they planted their lives in the city and their church community. Their son, James, came along unexpectedly in the fall of 2007, and just six months later, everything changed in a moment for this young family. Katherine was immediately rushed into brain surgery, though her chance of survival was slim. As the sun rose the next morning, the surgeon proclaimed that Katherine had survived the removal of part of her brain, though her future recovery was uncertain. Yet in that moment, there was a spark of hope. Through forty days on life support in the ICU and nearly two years in full-time brain rehab, that small spark of hope was fanned into flame. Hope Heals documents Katherine and Jay's journey as they struggled to regain Katherine's quality of life and as she relearned to talk, eat, and walk. As Katherine returned home with a severely disabled body but a completely renewed purpose, she and Jay committed to celebrating this gift of a second chance by embracing life fully, even though that life looked very different than they could have ever imagined. As you uncover Katherine and Jay's remarkable story, you'll be encouraged to: Find lasting hope in the midst of struggle Embrace the unexpected Welcome God's miracles into your everyday life In the midst of continuing hardships, both in body and mind, Katherine and Jay found what we all long to find: a hope that heals the most broken place--our souls.
