Since the deaths of his mother and sister who burned at the stake for witchcraft, John has spent his nights lost in nightmares and his days drowning in melancholy. John immediately knows that this is no normal sickness. Nicholas, it seems, is falling apart because of a dangerous curse, and their only clue for a cure is a single name--Elizabeth Grey. Who is this girl and how has she become mixed up with such dark magic? John must put these questions aside when Elizabeth is brought to him from the palace's prison on the brink of death. Book Evolution of Sickness and Healing

Download or read book Evolution of Sickness and Healing written by Horacio Fábrega and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Evolution of Sickness and Healing is a theoretical work on the grand scale, an original synthesis of many disciplines in social studies of medicine. Looking at human sickness and healing through the lens of evolutionary theory, Horacio Fàbrega, Jr. presents not only the vulnerability to disease and injury but also the need to show and communicate sickness and to seek and provide healing as innate biological traits grounded in evolution. This linking of sickness and healing, as inseparable facets of a unique human adaptation developed during the evolution of the hominid line, offers a new vantage point from which to examine the institution of medicine. To show how this complex, integrated adaptation for sickness and healing lies at the root of medicine, and how it is expressed culturally in relation to the changing historical contingencies of human societies, Fàbrega traces the characteristics of sickness and healing through the early and later stages of social evolution. Besides offering a new conceptual structure and a methodology for analyzing medicine in evolutionary terms, he shows the relevance of this approach and its implications for the social sciences and for medical policy. Health scientists and medical practitioners, along with medical historians, economists, anthropologists, and sociologists, now have the opportunity to consider every essential aspect of medicine within an integrated framework. Download or read book Wolves of Wrath written by Quinn Loftis and published by Quinn Loftis Books, LLC. This book was released on 2017-09-27 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long ago, during the Great Purge, the witches that had grown too many in number and too powerful, were destroyed. The high fae council saw that the balance of good and evil had been tipped too far in one direction and it had to be rectified. So they killed all of the witches, and their creator...or so they thought. But they were wrong. Volcan, the high fae, who had once been a member of their council, until he decided he wanted to be all powerful and created the witches, had bided his time, hiding in the Dark Forest. Now he’s back and hell bent on rebuilding his army of witches. Only this time he’s set his eyes on the gypsy healers to be the tool from which he creates them. He already has two of the newly found healers, Jewel and Anna, with his blood running in their veins. And though he thinks he’s got it all planned out, what Volcan hadn’t calculated into his formula of healers + his blood = witches, was the healer’s mates, Dalton and Gustavo. Both males are more than ready to sink their teeth into the high fae who has taken their females. With the darkness closing in on all four of them, it is a toss up as to who will succumb to it first. Mean while, the healers and wolves Peri had stashed in the pixie realm are sitting ducks with the Veil between them and the human realm locked. The mates of those healers are holding onto their self control by a thread as they try to figure out a way to get them out of the pixie realm. Perizada is once again fighting for those who are under her protection, while at the same time trying not to kill them herself. Considering the healers tend to do stupid heroic stuff and the wolves just do stupid stuff period, it’s not certain who will destroy who. The only thing that was certain; none of them was willing to surrender. Throw in a powerful, eccentric Djinn who has suddenly gotten bored and things are guaranteed to get messy. This is the continuation of the story of the five gypsy healers, the fae who protects them and the wolves whose wrath will consume any who come between them.

Book Healing Insanity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Patrick E. Iroegbu
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2010-06-01
  • ISBN : 1450096271
  • Pages : 564 pages

Download or read book Healing Insanity written by Patrick E. Iroegbu and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Healing Insanity: A Study of Igbo Medicine in Contemporary Nigeria is an original and in-depth study on endogenous medical system in an African society. It is craftily written and provides solid insight, through case studies and theory, into how insanity affects patients and the society. Particularly, it explores various collective representations and strategies regarding insanity and healing as it examines the healing institutions, healers, and ritual cults. The central question is, given the patterns of healing, how do the Igbo shape the incidence and symptoms of insanity, define its aetiology, and provide healers with culture-specific resources and skills to address this illness? The focus became increasingly centred on bodily semantics and endogenous knowledge systems and practices. Dr. Patrick Iroegbu's work is a very valuable and rare study and has appeared at a desirable time. It is, for an African society, a comprehensive study of the many ways Igbo people, in their practical, routinelike attitudes and body-centred experiences, as well as in their more reflective aetiologic knowledge and healing institutions, relate to the phenomenon of insanity, or ara, in the cultural parlance. As the first of its kind, reminiscent of, and assured by, the various remarks of Igbo scholars and leaders at various meetings and discourses, the task this work has set out to accomplish is a very brave one. The author's account of his fieldwork experiences and adopted techniques illustrates his initiation, revealing him as a genuine ethnographer who is a "friend of people and at ease with his field." With both the far-seeing and inspiring analysis of Igbo medicine, life, and culture accounted for in the work, the book stands out for ethnographers, teachers, students, leaders, policymakers, and the general public. This is a book that deserves to be read as it shapes the critical path toward understanding ways of healing insanity in a culture-specific context, crosscutting perspectives for a relationship between indigenous healing and the biomedical sphere. Prof. René Devisch (Africa Research Centre, University of Leuven) This book is written with a clear purpose for everyone to read to understand and heal insanity and indeed provides a thick piece of cultural philosophy and vernacular of Igbo medicine in hopes of putting cultural wisdom in pursuit of integral health care development. Prof. Pantaleon Iroegbu (Professor of Philosophy, Major-Seminary, Ekpoma, January 2006) To read this book, as I did, is to get the benefit of Dr. Patrick Iroegbu's ethnographic insight for an archetypical African healing system in Igboland. It offers a fascinating theory of symbolic release that speaks of African symbolic action and knowledge system. Dr. Paul Komba, Esq. (University of Cambridge)

Book Caribbean Healing Traditions

Download or read book Caribbean Healing Traditions written by Patsy Sutherland and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-24 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Caribbean communities become more international, clinicians and scholars must develop new paradigms for understanding treatment preferences and perceptions of illness. Despite evidence supporting the need for culturally appropriate care and the integration of traditional healing practices into conventional health and mental health care systems, it is unclear how such integration would function since little is known about the therapeutic interventions of Caribbean healing traditions. Caribbean Healing Traditions: Implications for Health and Mental Health fills this gap. Drawing on the knowledge of prominent clinicians, scholars, and researchers of the Caribbean and the diaspora, these healing traditions are explored in the context of health and mental health for the first time, making Caribbean Healing Traditions an invaluable resource for students, researchers, faculty, and practitioners in the fields of nursing, counseling, psychotherapy, psychiatry, social work, youth and community development, and medicine.
