Book Tribology and Mechanics of Magnetic Storage Devices

Download or read book Tribology and Mechanics of Magnetic Storage Devices written by Bharat Bhushan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since January 1990, when the first edition ofthis first-of-a-kind book appeared, there has been much experimental and theoretical progress in the multi disciplinary subject of tribology and mechanics of magnetic storage devices. The subject has matured into a rigorous discipline, and many university tribology and mechanics courses now routinely contain material on magnetic storage devices. The major growth in the subject has been on the micro- and nanoscale aspects of tribology and mechanics. Today, most large magnetic storage industries use atomic force microscopes to image the magnetic storage components. Many companies use variations of AFMs such as friction force microscopes (FFMs) for frictional studies. These instruments have also been used for studying scratch, wear, and indentation. These studies are valuable in the fundamental understanding of interfacial phenomena. In the second edition, I have added a new chapter, Chapter 11, on micro and nanoscale aspects of tribology and mechanics of magnetic storage compo nents. This chapter presents the state of the art of the micro/nanotribology and micro/nanomechanics of magnetic storage components. In addition, typographical errors in Chapters 1 to 10 and the appendixes have been corrected. These additions update this book and make it more valuable to researchers of the subject. I am grateful to many colleagues and particularly to my students, whose work is reported in Chapter 11. I thank my wife, Sudha, who has been forbearing during the progress of the research reported in this chapter.

Maya Oman is the daughter of the woman who controls what’s left of civilization, the CEO of Ascendant Pharmaceuticals Corporation. Her smile is as ubiquitous as air, selling everything from vital medicine to vanity drugs with risky side effects. Lifelike android clones reside in over a dozen homes, shielding her from the violent resentment of a population straining under her mother’s boot heel. Ascendant’s power comes from Xenodril, a drug capable of reversing the effects of Fade, a disease some claim came from aliens or from the governments that predate the war. Only Ascendant sells it, and at a price only Citizens can afford. The rest are left to die. Maya’s earliest memories are of living alone in a penthouse apartment, desperate for the attention of a mother who never visits. Forbidden to go out except to record advertising video, her only friend has been the ‘net. When she is taken for ransom by a group of mercenaries with nothing left to lose, she discovers her life may not be what she thought it was—or wants.

Book Computing Concepts for Information Technology

Download or read book Computing Concepts for Information Technology written by Bob Brown and published by Campers' Press. This book was released on 2023-08-03 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computing Concepts for Information Technology explains how computers really work, including how images, sounds, and video are represented by numbers and how chips with millions of transistors process those numbers. Computing Concepts for Information Technology is suitable for people with no prior study of computer systems, although it may be helpful to have experience with a high-level programming language such as Java or Python. Computing Concepts for Information Technology tells a story that begins in the 19th century and shows that the Internet, phones, tablets, and laptops that are so much a part of our lives did not spring fully formed from a Silicon Valley campus. On the inside, computers are all about numbers, and the story continues with numbers and number systems. It reveals the mysteries of binary numbers and explains why computers use a number system different from the one we use every day. One of the reviewers of the book remarked that students of computing should know enough about the digital logic that makes computers work to believe that what’s inside is not little green Martians with calculators, and the book provides a thorough explanation. Input and output, data communications, computer software, and information security are covered at a fundamental level and provide the necessary background for further study. The beginning of the 21st century is an exciting time for those who make, use, and study computers and computer systems, and this book provides the basis for keeping up with the changes that are taking place right now.
