Book Headquarters Economy

Download or read book Headquarters Economy written by J. Myles Shaver and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metropolitan areas with a high concentration of headquarters from diverse industries stand out as influential, dynamic economies. However, there is little discussion about the characteristics of these 'headquarters economies'. Why do some regions develop vibrant headquarters economies, whereas others do not? The answer lies in understanding the essence of headquarters - the managerial talent pool that guides and governs these companies. By investigating an exemplar headquarters economy - Minneapolis-St. Paul - this volume demonstrates that the talent pool (managers), its movement among companies and industries in a region (mobility), and the nature of its inflow and outflow from a region (migration), can create a virtuous cycle that strengthens regional companies, and draws in additional talent. Comparing the migration pattern of educated, high-earning individuals across metropolitan areas in the United States, and drawing upon a proprietary survey of thousands of headquarters employees in Minneapolis-St. Paul, this book provides supportive evidence for this dynamic. A central insight of the research is that professional managerial talent is a determinant of regional vitality that has largely been overlooked. The underlying factors of managers, mobility, and migration, here identified in the context of Minneapolis-St. Paul, exist in metropolitan areas around the world, demonstrating the scope of application of the research findings, and highlighting the benefit of focusing on these underlying factors.

Book Armadillo World Headquarters

Download or read book Armadillo World Headquarters written by Eddie Wilson and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2017-04-04 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Eddie’s story is by turns hilarious, informative, and the living spirit of its age. . . . [He] piles the most unlikely anecdotes on top of one another, creating a land of enchantment and an order of chemically altered consciousness that rescues an era I’d thought not so much lost as forgotten. Not only am I thrilled I’ve read this story and wish I was in it, I wish I’d written it.” —Dave Marsh, from the foreword “The Armadillo World Headquarters . . . was one of the most exciting, and remained one of the most exciting, places in the United States for the years that it was in operation. I saw a little of everything at the Armadillo, and it was one of the great experiences of my life.” —Ann Richards, from the author’s preface On August 7, 1970, Eddie Wilson and a band of hippies threw open the doors of Armadillo World Headquarters, and the live music capital of the world was born in Austin, Texas. Over its ten-year lifespan, the Armadillo hosted thousands of high-profile musicians—Willie Nelson, Frank Zappa, Bruce Springsteen, Taj Mahal, AC/DC, Charlie Daniels, the Ramones, Roy Buchanan, and Bette Midler, to name a random few. The Armadillo helped define the Austin lifestyle, culture, and identity, setting the stage for successors such as the SXSW music festival, PBS’s Austin City Limits, and the ACL festival, which have made Austin an international destination for music fans. In this rollicking memoir, Eddie Wilson tells the behind-the-scenes story of the Armadillo from the moment he first peered into a derelict National Guard armory building and knew that destiny had found him. He vividly describes how two previously clashing groups—rednecks and hippies—came together at the Armadillo, enjoying a new blend of country music and rock that spawned a many-named movement: cosmic cowboy, progressive country, and redneck rock, among others. Wilson also reveals the struggles and creative solutions that kept the doors open, the angels who provided timely infusions of cash, the janitors and carpenters who maintained the Dillo, and the artists who created iconic poster art. Extensively illustrated with candid photographs and music posters, Armadillo World Headquarters recounts the story of this legendary venue as no other book can.

Book George Washington at Head Quarters Dobbs Ferry

Download or read book George Washington at Head Quarters Dobbs Ferry written by Mary Sudman Donovan and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-08-26 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gen. George Washington faced a myriad of obstacles in the summer of 1781. In George Washington at “Head Quarters, Dobbs Ferry,” author and historian Mary Sudman Donovan explores this crucial period during the American Revolutionary War by chronicling his activities. In July, he moved a large contingent of the Continental army to the east bank of the Hudson River near the eastern terminus of Dobbs Ferry. There, on a large expanse known as Philipsburg, he established a joint encampment with the French army commanded by the Comte de Rochambeau, and for the first time, French and American soldiers were trained side by side. They had trouble communicating but used visual signals and universal commands. Washington and the Comte de Rochambeau created detailed surveys of the surrounding territory, evaluating strategies for invading the British stronghold on York (Manhattan) Island. Washington also corresponded with leaders of the Continental Congress and governors of the various states, imploring them to provide better support in the form of funds, supplies, and additional recruits. This day-to-day view of Washington as he devised the strategy that led to America’s victory, offers a rare insight into the mind of the man Americans chose as their commander in chief.

Book excerpt: Illustrated with over two hundred and sixty maps, photos and portraits, of the battles, individuals and places involved in the Crimean War. In this fascinating volume of letters and memoirs, the history of the Crimean War is full brought to life by Lt.-Col. Calthorpe. Lt.-Col. Calthorpe, later 7th baron Calthorpe (1831-1912), edited and initially published these letters anonymously that he had sent to friends from the Crimea, where he served as aide-de-camp to his uncle, Lord Raglan, whose reputation he stoutly defended. The letters run from 18 September 1854 until 30 June 1855 when, following Raglan’s death on 28 June, Calthorpe returned to Britain. In addition to the detailed account of military actions, Calthorpe mentions his participation in a decoy mission by ship to Yalta in late May 1855 and recalls a pleasure trip he had made to the southern Crimean coast in the summer of 1851.
