Book Mensch Marks

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joshua Hammerman
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2019-04-02

  • Pages : 240 pages

Download or read book Mensch Marks written by Joshua Hammerman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Talmud states, "In a world that lacks humanity, be human." In a world as untethered as ours has become, simply being human, a good person, is a measure of heroism. At a time when norms of civility are being routinely overwhelmed, it may be the only measure that matters. Mensch-Marks represents Rabbi Joshua Hammerman's personal Torah scroll—the sacred text of his experiences, the life lessons he has learned along his winding, circuitous journey. Mirroring 42 steps Israel wandered in the Wilderness, Hammerman offers 42 brief essays, several of which first appeared in The New York Times Magazine, organized into categories of character, or "mensch-marks," each one a stepping stone toward spiritual maturation. These essays span most of Rabbi Hammerman's life, revealing how he has striven to be a "mensch," a human of character, through every challenge. Mensch-Marks creates a brand-new genre. It is memoir as sacred story, as how-to book; a series of personal vignettes in dialogue with one another over the span of decades, resonating with eternal ideas that span centuries. It traces the author's own personal growth while providing a road map for people of all backgrounds seeking a life of moral vision. The wisdom is shared not from a pulpit on high, but rather from an unfolding story of a fellow traveler, one who has stumbled, failed, and persevered, struggling with the questions large and small. Through it all, Rabbi Hammerman has tried to live with dignity and grace, what he calls the "nobility of normalcy." He writes, "If by sharing what I've learned, I can add a modicum of generosity, honesty and human connection in a world overflowing with cruelty, loneliness and deceit, then I'll have done my job.' The essays cover crucial moments of failure and forgiveness, loving and letting go, finding deeper meaning in one's work, and holiness in the seemingly inconsequential moments of everyday life. Rabbi Hammerman, ever the optimist, believes that we can turn things around, one mensch at a time.

Book The Practice of Autonomy

Download or read book The Practice of Autonomy written by Carl Schneider and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1998 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Exploring what patients do want gives direction to the author's inquiry into what they should want. What patients want, he believes, is properly more complex and ambiguous than being "empowered." In this book he charts that ambiguity to take the autonomy principle past current pieties into the uncertain realities of the sick room and the hospital ward." "The Practice of Autonomy is a sympathetic but trenchant study of the animating principle of modern bioethics. It speaks with freshness, insight, and even passion to bioethicists and moral philosophers (about their theories), to lawyers (about their methods), to medical sociologists (about their subject), to policy-makers (about their ambitions), to doctors (about their work), and to patients (about their lives)."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: The country hasn’t learned much in thirty years. By 2045, America is in a debt-fueled decline. After a presidential election rife with scandal, internal division approaches civil war. Discovery of an abandoned Nazi installation in Antarctica gains interest up to an Oval Office desperate for a distraction. A frail little man, cryogenically preserved in a brass case, headlines the find. President Marge Ellis orders ‘the man in the box’ kept under tight security and brought to a military medical facility in Orlando, Florida. Doctor Charmaine “Charlie” Finney, LCDR, USN, a leading expert on cryogenics receives the task of reviving the mystery man she names Mensch. Nordic good looks belie her Semitic ethnicity. The administration hopes the man in the case is General Kammler who headed Nazi super weapons projects. What they find turns the world on its ear. “FOUND!” cries the world’s media, when Adolf Hitler is identified. He has no memory. At learning his history, he professes remorse and a passion to make amends. Mysterious, recurrent dreams haunt him. Recent twists in statute of limitations laws soon set him free. On the outside, he discovers a following beyond any expectation. Charlie accompanies him. He loves Charlie and calls her “My Better Angel”, but power is seductive. As much of a divided country rallies around him, will she be enough to keep him on the right path?

With this volume, colleagues, graduates and friends want to celebrate her philosophical oeuvre. Her entire life’s work has been characterized by both humanitarian and humanist commitment: to seek the principles of justice in the co-existence of human beings, but that philosophy also provides the basic yardstick, to highlight distortions on recent theories. Her philosophical work is alive with the commitment to a philosophy which is compelled to seek the principles of greater justice and solidarity

Book Mensch

Download or read book Mensch written by Marvin Zolot and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born in primitive circumstances in a small village in Prussia in the early 20th Century, Manfred Swarsensky rose to become the youngest rabbi ever appointed to the Jewish Commmunity in Berlin in 1932. A gifted orator and riveting speaker, his fame spread throughout Europe as he spoke out frequently and fervently against the National Socialist Government of Adolf Hitler. He was warned to cease and desist his defamation of the Fascist Government of the Nazis, but he persisted. Predictably, he was thrown into a concentration camp where he was subjected to unspeakable horrors. He found his way to a small Midwestern college town, Madison, Wisconsin, where he became the founding rabbi of a Reform Congregation. He stated, "I was saved from the ovens to be a messenger from the dead to the living." Swarzensky became one of the most important moral and ethical forces in mid-America in the second half of the 20th Century. Rabbi Swarsensky was a bridge Builder and at the forefront of Judeo-Christian dialogue. He was called "An Apostle to the Gentiles," and, although thoroughly Jewish, "The finest Christian in Madison." He was involved in the civil rights struggle in the 1960's, a mitigating force in the threatened anarchy surrounding anti-Vietnam protests on college campuses that threatened to engulf the entire nation. According to Rabbi Swarsensky, "A Mensch is a complete person, both human and humane." Rabbi was a Mensch.
