Book He Effects of Fungicide and Genetics on Fungal Diseases on Wheat in Nebraska with Emphasis on Stem Rust

Download or read book He Effects of Fungicide and Genetics on Fungal Diseases on Wheat in Nebraska with Emphasis on Stem Rust written by Javed Sidiqi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To determine if Sr7b was present in Gage, Gage was crossed by ISr7b-Ra. F2 and F2:3 families were evaluated for stem rust resistance. The segregation of F2 plants and F 2:3 families for stem rust resistance fitted well with 15:1 ratio for two separate resistance genes in the two replications. These results suggest that Sr7b segregates independently from an unknown resistance gene in Gage.

Book The Wheat Rusts Breeding for Resistance

Download or read book The Wheat Rusts Breeding for Resistance written by Douglas R. Knott and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for this book was conceived by the late Dr. Irvine A. Watson of the University of Sydney, and he developed the first outline. I was then invited by Dr. Watson to share in its writing. Unfortunately, shortly there after, recurring heart problems forced him to curtail his activities and with draw from the project. He died before the book could be completed. Dr. Watson's intention was to produce a very practical book that would provide wheat breeders with all of the information necessary to breed success fully for resistance to the three wheat rusts: leaf rust, stem rust, and yellow rust. It was intended to be very specific in describing procedures to be used and at the same time provide all of the necessary theoretical background. I hope that I have been successful in meeting these objectives. The book assumes that the reader has some knowledge of plant pathology, genetics, and plant breeding. Extensive use has been made of the literature, but it was not possible to cite all of the papers on a given topic. In making a choice, an attempt was made to choose key papers or more recent papers that provided references to the earlier literature. Acknowledgements This book was written partly at the University of Saskatchewan and partly at the University of California, Davis, while I was on a sabbatical leave.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wheat rust diseases have been among the most devastating of all plant diseases since biblical times. Now that nearly a half century has passed without a significant outbreak in the world's major wheat- producing regions, forward writer Nobel laureate Norman Borlaug cautions against complacency. Four contributed chapters examine how the science of plant pathology has responded to such challenges as stem rust of wheat epidemics in the North American Great Plains in the first half of the 20th century, and common barberry as an insidious spreader of black stem rust. Includes photos of plant pathologists and their research in the field (literally). c. Book News Inc.

Book Epidemiology and Management of Fusarium Head Blight and Foliar Fungal Diseases of Wheat

Download or read book Epidemiology and Management of Fusarium Head Blight and Foliar Fungal Diseases of Wheat written by Carlos Bolanos-Carriel and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fusarium head blight (FHB) caused by Fusarium graminearum, the FHB-associated mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON), and foliar fungal diseases are significant threats to wheat production. This research 1) evaluated the effects of fungicide chemical class, application timing, and cultivar resistance on FHB and DON under field conditions; 2) evaluated the effects of field-applied fungicide chemical class, grain moisture, and time on DON under grain storage conditions; 3) evaluated the effects of field-applied fungicide chemical class and time on trichothecene-related gene (Tri5) expression under grain storage conditions; 4) determined the optimum F. graminearum spore concentration and spike bagging period following inoculation for accurately discriminating between FHB resistant and susceptible wheat cultivars under greenhouse conditions; and 5) determined the optimum timing of fungicide applications for control of foliar fungal diseases of wheat under field conditions. A triazole fungicide controlled FHB and DON more effectively than a strobilurin fungicide. A triazole applied 6 days after anthesis was as effective as an anthesis (standard timing) application, indicating a wider window of application for growers' needed flexibility. In storage, DON decreased over time in grain of a moderately resistant cultivar treated with a triazole and increased in grain of a susceptible cultivar treated with a strobilurin. During storage, DON biosynthesis Tri5 gene expression increased over time during storage of high grain moisture grain, a significant reduction in the relative expression of the Tri5 gene and a downregulation of the gene occurred in the triazole treatment whereas expression of the gene increased in the strobilurin treatment. In the greenhouse, lower concentrations of F. graminearum inoculum (6.25 x 10 3 and 1.25 x 104 spores/mL) were more efficient in discriminating between a moderately resistant and a susceptible wheat cultivar compared to the standard concentration (1 x 105 spores/mL). The optimum spike bagging period following inoculation for discrimination between a moderately resistant and a susceptible cultivar was 48 hours or 72 hours (the standard). Foliar fungicide applications in field plots at the flag leaf and boot growth stages of wheat were more effective in protecting yield than later applications. Results from this research will enhance knowledge in the epidemiology and management of FHB, DON, and foliar fungal diseases of wheat.

Book Stem Rust Infection and Development in Artificially Inoculated Fields of Wheat at Hays Kansas and Its Effect on Yield 1960 to 1965

Download or read book Stem Rust Infection and Development in Artificially Inoculated Fields of Wheat at Hays Kansas and Its Effect on Yield 1960 to 1965 written by Roland F. Line and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most wheat varieties growing in the vicinity of Hays, Kansas, are susceptible to races of Puccinia graminis f. sp. tritici that are common in central United States. However, they are seldom severely damaged by stem rust. It is commonly thought that weather in that area is not favorable for establishment and development of stem rust. In 1960 to 1965 the epidemiology of stem rust was studied at Hays in fields of Cheyenne wheat inoculated with urediospores of race 56 when the plants were in tillering to boot stages of growth. Infection occurred in all 6 years. Rust increase was related to the frequency of days when conditions were favorable for infection. Plots with initial intensities of 2.5 to 20 pustules per 100 culms were compared. In the 6 consecutive years (1960 to 1965) severities at soft dough stage were about 30, 25, 7, 2, 2, and 20%; yields for rusted plots were 20, 19, 25, 34, 22, and 18 bu/acre; and yields for adjacent control areas were 46, 29, 45, 35, 29, and 62 bu/acre, respectively. In 1965, a natural epidemic of stem rust caused severe damage to wheat in Kansas and Nebraska. In 1965, the crop ripened late in the season. In 5 of the 6 years, weather was favorable for rust epidemics. Late natural infection appeared to be the primary factor limiting severity of the rust epidemics. (Author).

Book Wheat Rusts

Download or read book Wheat Rusts written by R. A. McIntosh and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although stem rust is mostly controlled by means of resistance cultivars, leaf and stripe rust continue as major problems in many wheat-growing areas of the world. Wheat Rusts: An Atlas of Resistance Genes provides a basis to identify genes for resistance to stem, leaf and stripe rusts of wheat. Typical phenotypes associated with most known genes for resistance to these three diseases are illustrated in full colour. This book will assist plant breeders and pathologists to identify candidate resistance genes, thereby saving substantial time and resources. Prepared by well-known specialists from a leading international laboratory, Wheat Rusts: An Atlas of Resistance Genes comprises an introductory chapter, details of individual resistance genes, appendices and an index. Details for each gene include chromosome location, aspects of genetics and pathogen variation, the effect of environment of expression, origin, availability in genetic and breeding stocks and use in agriculture.
