Book New Television Old Politics

Download or read book New Television Old Politics written by Hernan Galperin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-05-24 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the economic, political, and technological forces that are shaping the future of broadcasting in advanced industrialized nations by comparing the transition from analog to digital TV in the US and Britain. Digital TV involves a major reordering of the broadcast sector that requires governments to rethink governance tools for the digital media era. By looking at how the transition is unfolding in these nations, the book uncovers the political underpinnings of the emerging governance regime for digital communications and explores the implications of the transition for the development of the Information Society in the US and Europe. The findings challenge much conventional wisdom about media deregulation and the globalization of communications. The transition to digital TV has not weakened but rather reinforced government control over broadcasting. Moreover, contrary to what many globalization theories would predict, it has reinforced preexisting differences in the organization of media across nations.

Book Integrated Video Frequency Continuous Time Filters

Download or read book Integrated Video Frequency Continuous Time Filters written by Scott D. Willingham and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in the state of the art mean the signal processing ICs of ever-increasing complexity are being introduced. While the typical portion of a large IC devoted to analog circuits has diminished, the performance of those surviving analog signal processing circuits remains vital and their design challenging. Moreover, the emerging high-definition TV technology has created a new area for IC development, one with formidable signal processing requirements. The antialiasing filters needed for one proposed HDTV decoder motivated the research documented in this book. Sharply selective filters place tight constraints on the permitted excess phase shifts of their constituent circuits. Combined with stringent requirements for low distortion at video frequencies, these constraints challenge the IC filter designer. Integrated Video-Frequency Continuous-Time Filters: High-Performance Realizations in BiCMOS deals with what is arguably the mainstay of analog signal processing circuits. Prominent applications in computer disk-drive read channels, video receivers, rf circuits, and antialiasing and reconstruction in data converters testifies to their importance. Moreover, they are excellent benchmarks for more general analog signal processors. Bipolar and MOSFET transistors, freely combined at the lowest circuit levels, provide the designer with an opportunity to develop potent variations on the standard idioms. The book considers the general principles of BiCMOS circuit design, through to a demanding design problem. This case-study approach allows a concrete discussion of the justification for and practical trade-offs of each design decision. Audience: A reference work for experienced IC designers and a text for advanced IC design students.

Book Handbook of Transnational Economic Governance Regimes

Download or read book Handbook of Transnational Economic Governance Regimes written by Christian Tietje and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2009-10-14 with total page 1105 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-governmental organizations, transnational business associations, private standard-setting bodies, public-private partnerships, and institutionalized incentive schemes now occupy a central place in the regulation and governance of transnational economic affairs alongside states and intergovernmental organizations. Much of the literature on these new and emerging patterns of governance has focused on the legal, political, and normative implications of this rapidly evolving landscape. The Handbook of Transnational Economic Governance Regimes expands on this scholarship by identifying, describing, and analysing more than 85 of the most significant actors in transnational governance. The Handbook examines the origins, evolution, structure, membership, financing, and strategies of key organizations and regulatory networks in almost every sphere of global economic activity, and analyses their role and influence in contemporary transnational economic governance.

Book Technology Television and Competition

Download or read book Technology Television and Competition written by Jeffrey A. Hart and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-02-05 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1980s and 1990s, the advanced industrial countries considered replacing the existing analogue television infrastructure with a new digital one. A key common feature to the debates over digital TV (DTV) in the United States, Western Europe and Japan was the eventual victory of the ideas of digitalism (the superiority of everything digital over everything analogue) and of digital convergence (the merging of computing, telecommunications and broadcasting infrastructures made possible by digitalization) in public debates over standards. Jeffrey Hart's book shows how nationalism and regionalism combined with digitalism to produce three different and incompatible DTV standards in the three regions, an outcome which has led to missed opportunities in developing the new technologies. Hart's book contributes to our understanding of relations between business and government, and of competition between the world's great economic powers.
