Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: They were many, such as Tassaduk Ahmed, Altaf Ali, Ayub Ali Master and others who started the cogs turning and brought about changes for the community; one such change was capacity building for the youth of their time. Then the community needed to take the reign of living in UK by getting into the decision making systems. So in 1982, sadly after the 1978 murder of Altab Ali, the community leaders put forward seven Independent councillors to contest the seats in key wards in Tower Hamlets. The effort did not go to waste, we had the first two Bangladeshi councillors out of eleven contesting in four wards, St Katharine's, St Mary's, Spitalfields and Weavers. Out of which the Labour party candidate won in St Katharine's Ward and one Independent seat in Spitalfields. The community finally got in but it took many years before shifting the balance and directly addressing the deprivation and lack of investment in the borough and this book recognises and celebrates the councillors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a thematic collection of hagiographical stories of Sufi saints, often referred to as friends of Gods. Despite the diverse wealth of Sufi works, much of the rich, global and centuries old literature of Sufi warrior-saints, has yet to be translated into English. Examining hagiographical depictions of Sufi mujahids, Neale corrects frequent misunderstandings of the term jihad in relation to Sufi thought and practice. Using Sufi hagiography, treatises, travel narratives and Muslim histories, each chapter comprises the lives of Sufi saints during significant historical events, from the Crusades to the Mongol Invasion and in regions ranging from Islamic Spain to North Africa and India. Using Persian and Arabic sources, this compendium of translated hagiographies gives us a sense of the range, themes and global dissemination of the Sufi literature on war and heroism.

Book Border Crossings

Download or read book Border Crossings written by Mohammad Chowdhury and published by Unbound Publishing. This book was released on 2021-06-10 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ‘His marginalisation in dual cultures ascribed to him allows him a brilliant birds-eye view of both, which he employs in his bid to untangle the cultural mindsets he comes across’ Muslim News ‘Offers invaluable insights into how a modern cosmopolitan navigates the complex and delicate contours of faith, identity and belonging in an otherwise globally, interconnected world’ Ekow Nelson, reimagining Whether negotiating the mind-games of the Israeli intelligence services or performing ablutions in a London bathroom, Mohammad Chowdhury’s life as a British Muslim travelling the world brings daily challenges. Border Crossings is the story of Chowdhury’s journey, gripping in some parts and shame-inducing in others, as he describes a lifelong struggle to reconcile the British, Asian and Muslim sides of his identity, constantly dealing with the mistrust of Westerners alongside the hypocrisies of his own community and their misunderstanding of Islam. Chowdhury's story echoes the experience of thousands of Western Muslims who since 9/11 have been subjected to a constant barrage of questions that cast doubt over the very goodness of their faith. It is the story of a man who cries when England win the Ashes, yet still finds himself screaming in the face of racism and religious bigotry. This timely book powerfully rejects the poisonous narrative that Muslims can no longer be trusted as honest citizens of the West.

Book Political Islam and Governance in Bangladesh

Download or read book Political Islam and Governance in Bangladesh written by Ali Riaz and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-10-04 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past decade has seen a marked policy focus upon Bangladesh, home to nearly 150 million Muslims; it has attracted the attention of the world due to weak governance and the rising tide of Islamist violence. This book provides a broad-ranging analysis of the growth and impact of "political Islam" in Bangladesh, and reactions to it. Grounded in empirical data, experts on Bangladesh examine the changing character of Bangladeshi politics since 1971, with a particular focus on the convergence of governance, Islamism and militancy. They examine the impacts of Islamist politics on education, popular culture and civil society, and the regional and extraregional connections of the Bangladeshi Islamist groups. Bringing together journalists and academics - all of whom have different professional and methodological backgrounds and field experiences which impact upon these issues from different vantage points - the book assesses Bangladesh’s own prospects for internal stability as well as its wider impact upon South Asian security. It argues that the political environment of Bangladesh, the appeal of Islamist ideology to the general masses and the dynamic adaptability of Islamist organizations all demonstrate that Bangladesh will continue to focus the attention of policy makers and analysts alike. This is a timely, incisive and original explanation of the rise of political Islam and Islamic militancy in Bangladesh.
