Book Lightning Protection of Aircraft

Download or read book Lightning Protection of Aircraft written by Franklin Fisher and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2012-07-13 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an attempt to present under one cover the current state of knowledge concerning the potential lightning effects on aircraft and that means that are available to designers and operators to protect against these effects. The impetus for writing this book springs from two sources- the increased use of nonmetallic materials in the structure of aircraft and the constant trend toward using electronic equipment to handle flight-critical control and navigation function.

Book Lightning warning Systems for Use by Airports

Download or read book Lightning warning Systems for Use by Airports written by Lawrence J. Heitkemper and published by Transportation Research Board National Research. This book was released on 2008 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Cloud-to-ground lightning strikes present a clear and immediate danger for ground personnel involved in outdoor ramp operations, such as aircraft fueling, baggage handling, food service, tug operations, and guiding and directing aircraft to their assigned gates. When this danger presents, airport ramp operations are suspended until the threat has passed. Airport staff engaged in outdoor activities are also subject to the impact of lightning strikes. Decisions about ground personnel and ramp operations are made by the airports and airlines, not by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Individual airlines, companies providing airport workers, and airport management often have very different procedures and standards for identifying and responding to potential lightning hazards."--Page 1

Book Lightning Physics and Lightning Protection

Download or read book Lightning Physics and Lightning Protection written by Eduard M. Bazelyan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lightning Physics and Lightning Protection presents a comprehensive and up-to-date review of lightning, including its hazards and protection techniques. The authors first discuss the effectiveness of conventional protective measures, supply technical advice and practical recommendations, and explore the prospects for the preventive control of a lightning leader, followed by a discussion of the initiation of a leader and return stroke and subsequent components. After including measurements useful for understanding lightning and its effects, the book describes the mechanism of lightning discharge processes. It then examines the effects of large aircraft, high-voltage lines, and other high-altitude constructions on lightning trajectory and leader attraction. The book concludes by studying the action of lightning's electrical and magnetic fields and the lightning current on industrial premises, power transmission lines, underground communications, aircraft and their electrical circuits, and the induction of a dangerous overvoltage. A clear, straightforward, and systematic presentation of complicated material, Lightning Physics and Lightning Protection provides deep insight into the physics of lightning, simple analytical estimates, and a detailed illustration of effects by computer simulation, making this resource essential for those who investigate lightning phenomena and who have to solve practical protection problems.

Book Lightning Engineering Physics Computer based Test bed Protection of Ground and Airborne Systems

Download or read book Lightning Engineering Physics Computer based Test bed Protection of Ground and Airborne Systems written by Paul Hoole and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-11 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a contemporary and comprehensive overview of the physics of lightning and protection systems, based on nearly 40 years of research, teaching, and consultancy work in this area. The book begins with an overview of the climatology of lightning and electric storms, as well as giving insight into lightning discharge from the preliminary discharges or processes such as corona, stepped leader, and subsequent return strokes, including the important submicrosecond threats and continuous current. The subsequent chapters present measures of lightning threat analysis to aircraft and electric power systems, protection measures to be used in high-voltage to low-voltage computer and communication systems, as well as to commercial and domestic buildings. The book discusses challenges posed by the submicrosecond lighting current changes and climate change to present and future high-voltage apparatus and structures (including carbon composite aircraft and new buildings) exposed to lightning strikes. Including worked examples, illustrations, and detailed analysis, Lightening Engineering will be of interest to electrical engineers, as well as researchers and graduate students.

Book Protection of Nonmetallic Aircraft from Lightning

Download or read book Protection of Nonmetallic Aircraft from Lightning written by and published by . This book was released on 1945 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests have been made on an XCG-7 all-wood glider and on a PT-19A training airplane having a tubular metal fuselage and wood wings by passing electric surges simulating lightning discharges through the aircraft and measuring the voltage induced between various points which might be touched by an occupant. The metal fuselage was found to be safe, but dangerous voltages were found in the all-wood glider. A practical system of bonding supplemented by external lightning conductors is suggested which would suffice to protect the occupants from electrocution.

Download or read book Thunderstorm Hazards Flight Research written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A highly instrumented NASA F-106B aircraft, modified for the storm hazards mission and protected against direct lightning strikes, was used in conjunction with various ground based radar and lightning measurement systems to collect data during thunderstorm penetration flights. During 69 thunderstorm penetrations, there were 10 direct lightning strikes to the aircraft. No problems were encountered with any of the aircraft's systems as a result of the strikes and the research instrumentation performed as designed. Electromagnetic characteristics of nine strikes were recorded, and the results of other experiments confirm the theory that X-ray radiation and nitrous oxide gas are being produced by processes associated directly with thunderstorm electric fields and lightning discharges. A better understanding of aircraft lightning attachment mechanisms and strike zones is being accomplished by careful inspection, identification, and documentation of lightning attachment points and swept stroke paths following each strike to the aircraft. Book Atmospheric Electricity Threat Definition for Aircraft Lightning Protection

Download or read book Atmospheric Electricity Threat Definition for Aircraft Lightning Protection written by B. G. Melander and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The AE threat definition includes threats of two basic types. The first includes all lightning-associated threats and the second includes static electrification threats. Cloud-to-ground lightning has been studied extensively and is used as the basis for the present lightning threat definition. The defined threat is compared to available cloud-to-ground lightning strike data. Intracloud discharges, which account for over half of all discharges, are less well studied, but usually are less severe. Direct strike measurements of intracloud lightning on an F-106 research aircraft during the NASA Storm Hazards Program are compared to the threat based on the cloud-to-ground discharges. Characterization of static electrification including streamers and corona are also included in the total atmospheric electricity threat. Static electrification is caused by both triboelectric and exogeneous charging which creates both corona and streamers.

Book Lightning Hazards to Aircraft Fuel Tanks

Download or read book Lightning Hazards to Aircraft Fuel Tanks written by and published by . This book was released on 1958 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The hazards of lightning strokes to aircraft fuel tanks have been investigated in artificial-generation facilities specifically constructed to duplicate closely the natural lighting discharges to aircraft determined through flight research programs and analysis of lightning-damaged aircraft over a period of many years. Explosion studies were made in an environmental explosion chamber using small fuel tanks under various simulated flight conditions.
