Book Hazardous Substances and Classification of the Environmental Conditions in the Baltic Sea and the Kattegat

Download or read book Hazardous Substances and Classification of the Environmental Conditions in the Baltic Sea and the Kattegat written by and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Hazardous substances, both heavy metals and some man-made organic chemicals, are today widely distributed in the Baltic marine environment. Elevated levels of especially toxic contaminants are of concern, because they can pose a risk to sensitive ecosystems in the Baltic Sea. The objective is to compare and evaluate different classification systems for assessing pollution with hazardous substances in the marine environment presently used by the Nordic countries surrounding the Baltic Sea. The intention is also to propose an operational approach, which can bring the current monitoring strategies more in line with the objectives for environmental assessments in the EU Water Framework Directive. It is argued that an ecotoxicological approach should be developed and it should be based mainly on concentration levels in sediment and biota like mussels and fish and not on concentration levels in seawater. The comparisons and the evaluation of the different classification systems are based on available data for tributyltin (TBT), cadmium (Cd) and polychlorinated bisphenyls (PCBs) as three examples of hazardous substances occurring in the Baltic Sea region

Book A Systems Analysis of the Baltic Sea

Download or read book A Systems Analysis of the Baltic Sea written by F.V. Wulff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During recent decades, large-scale effects of pollution on marine estuaries and even entire enclosed coastal seas have become apparent. One of the first regions where this was observed is the Baltic Sea, whereby the appearance of anoxic deep basins, extensive algal blooms and elimination of top predators like eagles and seals indicated effects of both increased nutrient inputs and toxic substances. This book describes the physical, biochemical and ecological processes that govern inputs, distribution and ecological effects of nutrients and toxic substances in the Baltic Sea. Extensive reviews are supplemented by budgets and dynamic simulation models. This book is highly interdisciplinary and uses a systems approach for analyzing and describing a marine ecosystem. It gives an overview of the Baltic Sea, but is useful for any marine scientist studying large marine ecosystems.

Book Environmental Governance of the Baltic Sea

Download or read book Environmental Governance of the Baltic Sea written by Michael Gilek and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-03-21 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume presents a comprehensive and coherent interdisciplinary analysis of challenges and possibilities for sustainable governance of the Baltic Sea ecosystem by combining knowledge and approaches from natural and social sciences. Focusing on the Ecosystem Approach to Management (EAM) and associated multi-level, multi-sector and multi-actor challenges, the book provides up-to-date descriptions and analyses of environmental governance structures and processes at the macro-regional Baltic Sea level. Organised in two parts, Part 1 presents in-depth case studies of environmental governance practices and challenges linked to five key environmental problems - eutrophication, chemical pollution, overfishing, oil discharges and invasive species. Part 2 analyses and compares governance challenges and opportunities across the five case studies, focusing on governance structures and EAM implementation, knowledge integration and science support, as well as stakeholder communication and participation. Based on these cross-case comparisons, this book also draws a set of general conclusions on possible ways of improving the governance of the Baltic Sea by promoting what are identified as vital functions of environmental governance: coordination, integration, interdisciplinarity, precaution, deliberation, communication and adaptability.

Book Feasibility of Removal of Dioxin and Dioxin like PCB s by Intensive Fishery of Herring and Sprat in the Baltic Sea

Download or read book Feasibility of Removal of Dioxin and Dioxin like PCB s by Intensive Fishery of Herring and Sprat in the Baltic Sea written by Nordiska Ministerrådet and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2010 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report it is discussed and assessed whether it is feasible to reduce dioxin content of herring and sprat in the Baltic Sea by a period of intensified fishery in the region and if intensified fishery causes adverse environmental effects or affects the stocks of other species like cod, salmon and other pelagic species. The background is the present problems complying with the European Commission limit values for dioxins and dioxin-like PCBs in Fish from the Baltic Sea. Also flame retardants and other hazardous substances present an increasing quality problem for the fisheries sector.
