Book A Practical Guide to Chemical Spill Response

Download or read book A Practical Guide to Chemical Spill Response written by John Hosty and published by Van Nostrand Reinhold Company. This book was released on 1992 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the type and intensity of spills may vary, responders who are called upon to meet these emergency situations need a consistent, generic battle plan. That's exactly what they'll find when they read John Hosty and Patricia Foster's practical new guide on chemical spill response. They take readers from the planning stages, through actual first-response techniques, to disposal and cleanup methods, creating an airtight approach to spills that drastically reduces the possibility of error. A Practical Guide to Chemical Spill Response begins by addressing pre-incident activities, including the development of a contingency plan and personnel training that enhances responders' understanding of handling, storage, and disposal techniques. Here, the book acknowledges the many federal regulations - including the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act, the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act, and relevant Canadian standards - the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act, Provincial Spill Legislation, and the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System - to ensure that responders comply with these mandates. The book emphasizes the need for a coherent approach to spills, with coverage of the government and industry organizations that may be called upon to assist in an integrated response to specific situations. And it underscores the need for good public relations, stressing that personnel should be selected to deal with the media before incidents occur. The guide moves on to equipment review in light of U.S. and Canadian statutes, covering such areas as respiratory protection, protective clothing, and decontamination procedures. It then details the specific characteristics of hazardous materials, including flammability, corrosivity, toxicity, reactivity, and other incident risks. Readers are then fully prepared for the ensuing coverage of actual response techniques to the full range of emergency spills - among them, ground spills, water spills, contamination of the air, rail and truck spills, and in-plant spills. Throughout, illustrations clarify the response methods discussed. Wide-ranging enough to serve first responders working in the U.S. and Canada, and detailed enough to point up differences in the regulatory mandates of the two countries, A Practical Guide to Chemical Spill Response is a reference all spill control managers, emergency response coordinators, and their workers will want to have at hand.

Book Disposal Systems and Techniques for Oil and Hazardous Chemicals Recovered from Marine Spills

Download or read book Disposal Systems and Techniques for Oil and Hazardous Chemicals Recovered from Marine Spills written by Warren G. Hansen and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existing and conceptual equipment systems are presented for transport and disposal of spill cleanup debris. Each system is categorized and discussed in terms of possible operational conditions, applicability to different types of oils and chemicals, and capacity for the solid debris constituent. Additional data include cost, dimensions and weights of key equipment elements, transportability, and crew requirements. For oil spills, 13 disposal equipment systems (plus four auxiliary systems) are summarized based on literature and descriptions of past disposal experiences. Many floating and hazardous chemical spill debris may also be handled by the described systems although some modification is necessary to prevent recontamination of the environment, hazards to the crew, and deterioration of equipment. Conceptual methods for handling of hazardous wastes include special truck-towable containers and field-sealable bags. The oils and chemicals listed in the U.S. Coast Guard Chemical Hazards Response Information System (CHRIS: CG-446-1, Jan. 1974) are used as a basis for this study. (Author).

Book Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response

Download or read book Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response written by U.S. Department of Labor and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-03-15 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dumping of hazardous substances poses a significant threat to the environment. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) data show that over 18 million tons of hazardous substances covered by TRI were disposed of or released into the environment from 1998 through 2004.1 Hazardous substances are a serious safety and health problem that continues to endanger human and animal life and environmental quality. Discarded hazardous substances that are toxic, flammable, or corrosive can cause fires, explosions, and pollution of air, water, and land. Unless hazardous substances are properly treated, stored, or disposed of, they will continue to do great harm to living things that contact them, now and in the future. Because of the seriousness of the safety and health hazards related to hazardous waste operations and emergency response, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued its Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) standard to protect employees in this environment and to help them handle hazardous substances safely and effectively. The HAZWOPER standard covers all employers performing the following three general categories of work operations: Hazardous waste site cleanup operations (e.g., SUPERFUND cleanup), Operations involving hazardous waste that are conducted at treatment, storage, and disposal (TSD) facilities (e.g., landfill that accepts hazardous waste), and Emergency response operations involving hazardous substance releases (e.g., chemical spill at a manufacturing plant). This booklet provides an overview of the HAZWOPER requirements for each type of work operation and explains each section separately to provide a clearer understanding of the standard. Having this understanding enables employers to protect the health and safety of their employees in these different environments.
