Harp of New England song, That even in slumber tremblest with the touch Of poets who like the four winds from thee waken All harmonies that to thy strings belong, - Say, wilt thou blame the younger hands too much Which from thy laurelled resting-place have taken Thee, crowned-one, in their hold? There is a name Should quicken thee! No carol Hawthorne sang, Yet his articulate spirit, like thine own, Made answer, quick as flame, To each breath of the shore from which he sprang, And prose like his was poesy's high tone. Book The Complete Works of Nathaniel Hawthorne Vol 12 of 12

Download or read book The Complete Works of Nathaniel Hawthorne Vol 12 of 12 written by Nathaniel Hawthorne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 584 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Complete Works of Nathaniel Hawthorne, Vol. 12 of 12: With Introductory Notes In June, 1837, Hawthorne, writing to Longfellow, had observed: I can turn my attention to all sorts of drudgery, such as children's books, etc. One among several outgrowths of the ability he referred to was the group of Biographical Stories in the pres ent volume, hitherto included with Grandfather's Chair, under the general heading of True Stories. That he regarded the writing of them as in one sense drudgery, as a performance which would not have been undertaken but for the necessity of earning a liveli hood by his pen, appears probable from a letter which he addressed with the ms. Of Queen Christina to the conductress of a periodical in Northern New York. Oi this letter, which has been inaccessible for a long time, the date (according to the editor's remembrance) was about two years after that of the one to Longfellow just mentioned; and the terms in which it was couched left the impression that Hawthorne was then much in need of employment. We must not, however, forget his own statement in the brief note prefixed to the stories, that this small volume and others of a simi lar character have not been composed without a deep sense of responsibility. Indeed, whatever he wrote for children Hawthorne prepared with as much conscientiousness as the matter which he offered to a mature audience; and, conversely, his stories for older readers were invested with such a refinement of sim plicity that they were often well suited for children. A circumstance illustrating this is that The Lily's Quest, afterwards issued in the second series of twice-told Tales, was first printed (j annary 19, 1839) in The Southern Rose, a weekly paper for young readers, published at Charleston, South Caro. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Main-Street IT was one of the early literary projects of Nathaniel Hawthorne to put life into the dead body of New England historical annals. How lifeless those annals were we may discover by hunting them up on the dust-covered shelves of antiquarian libraries; and the enterprise of endowing them with bloom and fragrance would seem as hopeless an one as could be proposed to a literary man. But Hawthorne possessed creative genius, and that made all the difference. He himself was able to see through the veil of the printed page of the old annalist, and to behold rising before his imaginative vision, the world and the personages that had been, warm with life and glowing with color and passion. This vision be aimed to communicate, by the art of lucid and vivid portrayal and suggestion, in which he has had no superior, to his fellow citizens; by this beneficent spell he wrought upon them to make the acquaintance of their own past. It was in work of this kind, having this tendency, that the foundation of his genius first declared itself; and it is not unlikely that, for several years, Hawthorne cher.
