Download or read book Selected Poems written by Joy Goswami and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection brings together, for the first time, poetry from three strikingly different phases of Joy Goswami's formidable literary career -- Surjo-Pora Chhai (Ashes, Burnt by the Sun, 1999), Moutat Moheshwar (Shiva, My High, 2005) and Du Dondo Phowara Matro (Merely a Spurt of Time, 2011). Selected and translated by Sampurna Chatterji, this book, which includes an in-depth interview with the poet, introduces the English reader to the world of a poet whose language is powerful, inventive and often enigmatic. While some poems invoke a landscape that is 'mysterious, anguished and visionary', in others Joy Goswami achieves mischief and melancholy with the deftest of strokes.
Download or read book Portraits Of The Space We Occupy written by C P Surendaran and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2007-02-23 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Searing images of a city whose shutter speeds are so furiously fast that its people often miss the picture, a hyper-real presentation of the psychosis of power, fraught recollections of life in the shadow of death- this collection of new and selected poems by one of India's best known poets reveals, in glittering glimpses, a burnished and varied landscape. The words in these verses are contained, but barely. And it is this unrelenting tension between the words and the worlds they seek to shape that lends the poems a rare tensile quality. The new poems here principally fall into three cycles: Bombay, Ruhnama and Catafalque. The Bombay poems set their sights on the metaphors at work in the city's low life, with an eye to the cruel pathos rather than the polemics of whole, dire worlds that we tend to speed past at traffic lights. Ruhnama, which means Book of the Spirit in Persian, veers away from the external world of grime and hard-won battles of survival to explore the ways in which the exercise of power can become an end in itself. This verbally tangential series then gives way to an autumnal sequence of thirty poems, which are the more effective for being autobiographical: Surendran's father, Pavanan, a writer in Malayalam, was laid low in the last years of his life by Alzheimer's. The son spent days and nights at his father's bedside watching as first memories, then life itself surrendered to the inevitable. Also included in this collection are Surendran's celebrated short verses from Posthumous Poems which describe the story of a broken relationship in a brilliant synthesis of sadness and humour.

Download or read book Jawab i shikwa written by Muhammad Iqbal and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though much of Iqbal's best poetry is written in Persian, he is also a poet of colossal stature in Urdu. Shikwa (1909) and Jawab-i-Shikwa (1913) extol the legacy of Islam and its civilising role in history, bemoan the fate of Muslims everywhere, and squarely confront the dilemmas of Islam in modern times. Shikwa is thus, in the form of a complaint to Allah for having let down the Muslims and Jawab-i-Shikwa is Allah's reply to thepoet's complaint.
