Book George V Higgins

Download or read book George V Higgins written by Erwin H. Ford II and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best known for his popular crime fiction, Boston novelist George V. Higgins (1939-1999) should stand among the top ranks of the American literary canon. In his 26 novels and dozens of short stories, Higgins chronicled the lives of Boston's Irish with his trademark hard-boiled dialog, exploring the criminal underworld, American democracy, Boston politics, personal redemption and New England life in the tradition of Hawthorne and Thoreau. This intimate biography explores his turbulent life and career, including his working-class Irish Catholic roots, his two stormy marriages, his ambivalence toward the city of his birth, his passion for the limelight, and his drinking, which disrupted his family life and led to his early death at age 59. Discussions of Higgins's individual works and excerpts from his correspondence, writings, and thoughts on literature complete this revealing portrait.

Book The Oxford Handbook of Music and the Brain

Download or read book The Oxford Handbook of Music and the Brain written by Michael H. Thaut and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-08-01 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of music and the brain can be traced back to the work of Gall in the 18th century, continuing with John Hughlings Jackson, August Knoblauch, Richard Wallaschek, and others. These early researchers were interested in localizing musicality in the brain and learning more about how music is processed in both healthy individuals and those with dysfunctions of various kinds. Since then, the research literature has mushroomed, especially in the latter part of the 20th and early 21st centuries. The Oxford Handbook of Music and the Brain is a groundbreaking compendium of current research on music in the human brain. It brings together an international roster of 54 authors from 13 countries providing an essential guide to this rapidly growing field. The major themes include Music, the Brain, and Cultural Contexts; Music Processing in The Human Brain; Neural Responses to Music; Musicianship and Brain Function; Developmental Issues in Music and the Brain; Music, the Brain, and Health; and the Future. Each chapter offers a thorough review of the current status of research literature as well as an examination of limitations of knowledge and suggestions for future advancement and research efforts. The book is valuable for a broad readership including neuroscientists, musicians, clinicians, researchers and scholars from related fields but also readers with a general interest in the topic.

Book Audacity of Speaking in Tongues

Download or read book Audacity of Speaking in Tongues written by Oppong Kyekyeku and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2018-10-25 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Theological correctness has made speaking in tongues controversial, and it confuses everyone within Christendom. Many doubts which surrendering it are creating fear instead of faith for its authenticity, meanwhile Jesus promised every believer as one of the signs to follow us. Speaking in tongues is not the Holy Spirit, but it is the evidence indicating that the Holy Spirit has come upon you. It happened on the day of Pentecost, when one hundred and twenty believers gathered together in Jerusalem. The Holy Spirit came upon all of them, and they began to speak in tongues as evidence to confirm Jesus's prophecy. Peter couldn't ignore its reality but confirmed that the Holy Spirit had come upon the Gentiles just as they received, when he heard the household of Cornelius speaking in tongues. In Ephesus, Paul also believed the fact that the Holy Spirit had come upon all the twelve converts by laying his hands on them, because they spoke in tongues. Now we contemporary Christians cannot overlook this evidence. Instead, we must continue until we pass to the next generation. Because the truth has to be told.

Book Cola Cowboys

  • Author : Franklyn Wood
  • Publisher : Fox Chapel Publishing
  • Release : 2010-03-01
  • ISBN : 1908397845
  • Pages : 293 pages

Download or read book Cola Cowboys written by Franklyn Wood and published by Fox Chapel Publishing. This book was released on 2010-03-01 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This vivid account tells the story of the truckers who were driving from the UK to the Middle East in the early 1980s. The journey was rough, tough, exhausting, dirty, uncomfortable and dangerous. Journalist Franklyn Wood reports that 'in the course of the one trip we are following, seven Britons died in accidents.' Among the physical hazards were icy mountain hairpins, unmade roads and desert sandstorms. Human hazards included Kamikaze coach drivers, robbers, mind-numbingly slow border controls, rogue police and the temptations of the drivers' favourite watering holes. The route led from Europe, through Turkey, Iraq (during its war with Iran) and on to the wealth and culture shock of Saudi Arabia. The cargoes were often worth a million pounds. Delivering them and returning home for the next load - this was the Olympics of truck driving. "Cola Cowboys" was originally published in 1982 when it proved extremely popular. It has been out of print for many years and has been reprinted by popular demand.

Book Discovering Computer Science

Download or read book Discovering Computer Science written by Jessen Havill and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-10-27 with total page 543 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Havill's problem-driven approach introduces algorithmic concepts in context and motivates students with a wide range of interests and backgrounds." -- Janet Davis , Associate Professor and Microsoft Chair of Computer Science, Whitman College "This book looks really great and takes exactly the approach I think should be used for a CS 1 course. I think it really fills a need in the textbook landscape." -- Marie desJardins, Dean of the College of Organizational, Computational, and Information Sciences, Simmons University "Discovering Computer Science is a refreshing departure from introductory programming texts, offering students a much more sincere introduction to the breadth and complexity of this ever-growing field." -- James Deverick, Senior Lecturer, The College of William and Mary "This unique introduction to the science of computing guides students through broad and universal approaches to problem solving in a variety of contexts and their ultimate implementation as computer programs." -- Daniel Kaplan, DeWitt Wallace Professor, Macalester College Discovering Computer Science: Interdisciplinary Problems, Principles, and Python Programming is a problem-oriented introduction to computational problem solving and programming in Python, appropriate for a first course for computer science majors, a more targeted disciplinary computing course or, at a slower pace, any introductory computer science course for a general audience. Realizing that an organization around language features only resonates with a narrow audience, this textbook instead connects programming to students’ prior interests using a range of authentic problems from the natural and social sciences and the digital humanities. The presentation begins with an introduction to the problem-solving process, contextualizing programming as an essential component. Then, as the book progresses, each chapter guides students through solutions to increasingly complex problems, using a spiral approach to introduce Python language features. The text also places programming in the context of fundamental computer science principles, such as abstraction, efficiency, testing, and algorithmic techniques, offering glimpses of topics that are traditionally put off until later courses. This book contains 30 well-developed independent projects that encourage students to explore questions across disciplinary boundaries, over 750 homework exercises, and 300 integrated reflection questions engage students in problem solving and active reading. The accompanying website — https://www.discoveringcs.net — includes more advanced content, solutions to selected exercises, sample code and data files, and pointers for further exploration.
