Book Hausa Notes Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hausa Notes Classic Reprint written by Walter Richard Miller and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hausa Notes In heartily recommending this little work, alike to the student of Hausa, and to the European (official or otherwise) who may find his lot cast in Nigeria for a greater or less period, I cannot claim to speak as an expert myself in the language. After a very careful study of these Notes, however, I can testify to their value as an aid in acquiring a correct appreciation of the idiom of Hausa, the more so as being myself deeply interested in its structure and a student in some small degree of other African and Asiatic tongues. Dr. Cargill - himself fairly proficient in the language, - writes to me as follows: "In the first place this work is entirely original; no previous English work has been consulted; educated Hausas are Dr. Miller's sole authorities. And secondly he has elucidated points of grammar, which had passed entirely unnoticed by previous authors. This book is in short an independent, lucid, and masterly analysis of the Hausa language. I go so far as to assert that the average man, who is unblessed with the gift of original analysis, cannot hope to acquire even a moderate knowledge of Hausa, unless he masters this little work. I arose from the perusal of Hausa Notes with a feeling of personal gratitude. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Dictionary of the Hausa Language Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Charles Henry Robinson and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of the Hausa Language, Vol. 1 Hausa is probably the widely spoken language in the continent of Africa. Throughout Northern Nigeria it is the language of the greater part of the inhabitants and outside this wide area it forms a sort of lingua franca throughout a large part of Africa north of the equator. The traveller who knows the Hausa language can walk from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea sure of finding in almost every market place which he may pass en route some with whom he can converse. The fact that within recent years that part of Nigeria in which most of the Hausa people live has become an English Protectorate should serve to increase the interest of English students in this language. Before referring to the methods adopted in the production of this dictionary it will be well to state under what auspices the work has been carried out and to what extent it is based upon the labours of other students of the language. The task of compiling this dictionary was accomplished under the auspices and direction of the Hausa Association. On the death at Lokoja, on June 26, 1891, of the Rev. John Alfred Robinson, M.A. (a brother of the author), who had attempted to start Christian missionary work amongst the Hausas, a committee was formed in London to perpetuate his memory and to carry on his work "by providing for a throughly scientific study of the Hausa language." Book Hausa Folk Lore Customs Proverbs Etc Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book Hausa Folk Lore Customs Proverbs Etc Vol 1 of 2 written by R. Sutherland Rattray and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hausa Folk-Lore, Customs, Proverbs, Etc, Vol. 1 of 2: Collected and Transliterated With English Translation and Notes Such a' method, however, is more easily prescribed on paper than followed in the field. When the witness is illiterate - as commonly happens when there is genuine folk lore to be gathered - its application proves exceedingly troublesome, for reasons that may readily be divined. A more or less formal dictation lesson has somehow to be given and received; and the several parties to it are only too apt to conspire each in his own way to render it a failure. Thus the story-teller, on the one hand, is probably shy and sus picious at the outset; is put out of his stride by the slightest interruption; and, becoming weary all too soon, tends to take short cuts, instead of following to the end the meandering path of the genuine tradition. The reporter, in his turn, is incessantly puzzled by the idiom, more especially since in such a context archaisms will be frequent; boggles over a pronunciation adapted to a monotonous sing-son g delivery, or else, perhaps, to a dramatic mimicry carried on in several voices; and is likely to be steadily outpaced into the bargain. Mr. Rattray's happy thought, then, was to remedy the practical shortcomings of the standard method by finding some one who, as it were, could dictate to himself; who, in other words, could successfully combine the characters of story-teller and reporter in his single person.
