Book Diary of a Haunting

Download or read book Diary of a Haunting written by M. Verano and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the tradition of Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project, an American teen recounts the strange events that occur after she moves into a new—and very haunted—home with her family in this chilling diary that features photos and images of what she experienced. Letters, photographs, and a journal…all left behind in the harrowing aftermath. Following her parents’ high-profile divorce, Paige and her brother are forced to move to Idaho with their mother, and Paige doesn’t have very high hopes for her new life. The small town they’ve moved to is nothing compared to the life she left behind in LA. And the situation is made even worse by the drafty old mansion they’ve rented that’s filled with spiders and plenty of other pests that Paige can’t even bear to imagine. Pretty soon, strange things start to happen around the house—one can of ravioli becomes a dozen, unreadable words start appearing on the walls, and Paige’s little brother begins roaming the house late at night. And there’s something not right about the downstairs neighbor who seems to know a lot more than he’s letting on. Things only get creepier when she learns about the cult that conducted experimental rituals in the house almost one hundred years earlier. The more Paige investigates, the clearer it all becomes: there’s something in the house, and whatever it is…and it won’t be backing down without a fight.

Book excerpt: In the tradition of American Horror Story and The Craft, a young girl discovers a magical spell book and dives headfirst into the occult—but this powerful book comes with a dangerous warning: OPEN AT YOUR OWN RISK. All Melanie wants is a blank book to keep a journal of her private thoughts. One day while browsing in a used bookshop, she finds the perfect blank book—smooth black leather with strange symbols in gold embossing. But once she gets home, Melanie finds herself too intimidated by the heavy vellum pages to write her trivial thoughts on them. Her Wiccan friend Lara tells her it’s better suited to be a magical spell book, called The Book of Shadows. Melanie doesn’t know much about that stuff, but Lara, her boyfriend Caleb, and his friend Lucas, get her started by writing their own made up spells inside the book’s tempting pages. What they didn’t expect was a new spell showing up inside the book—and in handwriting none of them recognize. Soon they discover that the spells suggested by The Book of Shadows itself do work—but not without wreaking havoc on the lives of the four teenagers.

Catherine tries to concentrate on the job, but Mason's damaged visions begin to raise dark shadows from her own past. Shadows she'd hoped therapy had finally erased. As with all the best illusions, you are left feeling not tricked, but full of wonder." – The New York Times The haunting new thriller from Alex North, author of the New York Times bestseller The Whisper Man You knew a teenager like Charlie Crabtree. A dark imagination, a sinister smile--always on the outside of the group. Some part of you suspected he might be capable of doing something awful. Twenty-five years ago, Crabtree did just that, committing a murder so shocking that it’s attracted that strange kind of infamy that only exists on the darkest corners of the internet--and inspired more than one copycat. Paul Adams remembers the case all too well: Crabtree--and his victim--were Paul’s friends. Paul has slowly put his life back together. But now his mother, old and suffering from dementia, has taken a turn for the worse. Though every inch of him resists, it is time to come home. It's not long before things start to go wrong. Paul learns that Detective Amanda Beck is investigating another copycat that has struck in the nearby town of Featherbank. His mother is distressed, insistent that there's something in the house. And someone is following him. Which reminds him of the most unsettling thing about that awful day twenty-five years ago. It wasn't just the murder. It was the fact that afterward, Charlie Crabtree was never seen again...

The story unfolds in the quaint village of Ravenswood, where a foreboding mansion known as Blackmoor Manor stands as a symbol of terror and fear. The arrival of a mysterious stranger on a stormy night sets the stage for a bone-chilling narrative that delves into the supernatural realm, testing the limits of human courage and compassion. The book is divided into fifteen gripping chapters, each revealing a new layer of intrigue and horror. The stranger's arrival at the cursed manor marks the beginning of a harrowing journey that will forever change his fate and the lives of those around him. The protagonist is drawn to explore the haunted mansion, where whispers and ghostly apparitions surround him at every turn. As he uncovers the dark history of Blackmoor Manor, he learns of a vile pact made by its original owner-a pact that unleashed malevolent entities upon the estate, binding the spirits of his loved ones and himself to eternal torment. Determined to break the curse and free the trapped spirits, the stranger embarks on a quest for understanding. He delves into ancient tomes and discovers a grimoire of dark rituals and forgotten spells. Guided by an unyielding desire to confront the malevolence head-on, the stranger performs a powerful ritual, awakening the spectral realm where the spirits linger. In this ethereal plane, the stranger faces the malevolent entity that has haunted Blackmoor Manor for centuries. The entity, fueled by darkness and malevolence, challenges the stranger's courage and resolve. Through an act of profound empathy and selflessness, the stranger gains insight into the entity's true nature-a reflection of humanity's darkest impulses. The stranger's compassion becomes a catalyst for change. The maleficent force weakens, and the spirits of the mansion manifest before him, seeking solace and freedom. With tears in his eyes, the stranger offers forgiveness and release, ensuring that the spirits find peace at last. Having embraced his own vulnerability, the stranger willingly sacrifices himself to break the curse and release the spirits from their eternal anguish. As the ritual reaches its climax, a surge of light engulfs the mansion, transcending it from a place of darkness to one of healing and redemption. The impact of the stranger's actions extends far beyond Ravenswood. The legend of "The Haunting Shadows" becomes a global phenomenon, inspiring a movement of kindness and compassion. The book's core themes of empathy and selflessness touch hearts and minds worldwide, encouraging individuals to be forces for good in their communities. "The Haunting Shadows" leaves an indelible mark on literature and art, inspiring adaptations across various mediums. The village of Ravenswood transforms into a beacon of unity and understanding, and the stranger's true identity remains a captivating enigma that adds to the story's allure. As time passes, the tale endures through generations, reminding humanity that even in the darkest shadows, love and compassion can conquer all. The legacy of "The Haunting Shadows" becomes a timeless beacon of hope-a reminder that within every individual lies the power to break curses, heal wounds, and bring light to the darkest corners of existence. The haunting tale of the stranger and the cursed manor leaves readers with a profound message: that even in the bleakest of times, the human spirit can rise above malevolence and embrace the transformative power of empathy and love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vietnamese culture and religious traditions place the utmost importance on dying well: in old age, body unblemished, with surviving children, and properly buried and mourned. More than five million people were killed in the Vietnam War, many of them young, many of them dying far from home. Another 300,000 are still missing. Having died badly, they are thought to have become angry ghosts, doomed to spend eternity in a kind of spirit hell. Decades after the war ended, many survivors believe that the spirits of those dead and missing have returned to haunt their loved ones. In War and Shadows, the anthropologist Mai Lan Gustafsson tells the story of the anger of these spirits and the torments of their kin. Gustafsson's rich ethnographic research allows her to bring readers into the world of spirit possession, focusing on the source of the pain, the physical and mental anguish the spirits bring, and various attempts to ameliorate their anger through ritual offerings and the intervention of mediums. Through a series of personal life histories, she chronicles the variety of ailments brought about by the spirits' wrath, from headaches and aching limbs (often the same limb lost by a loved one in battle) to self-mutilation. In Gustafsson's view, the Communist suppression of spirit-based religion after the fall of Saigon has intensified anxieties about the well-being of the spirit world. While shrines and mourning are still allowed, spirit mediums were outlawed and driven underground, along with many of the other practices that might have provided some comfort. Despite these restrictions, she finds, victims of these hauntings do as much as possible to try to lay their ghosts to rest.
