Gabrielle Hatfield has drawn on a lifetime's knowledge to describe the properties of over 150 native plants, and the customs that surround them: from predicting the weather with seaweed to using deadly nightshade to make ladies' pupils dilate appealingly, and from ensuring a husband's faithfulness with butterbur to warding off witches by planting a rowan tree. Filled with stories, folklore and remedies both strange and practical, this is a memorable and eye-opening guide to the richness of Britain's heritage.

Book excerpt: Essex, one the largest counties of England, stretches from the suburban fringes of East London to the fishing and sailing ports of Harwich and Maldon and the famous seaside resorts of Clacton, Frinton, and Southend. Its buildings encompass rich Roman survivals, powerful Norman architecture, and the remains of major Tudor and Jacobean country houses. Essex is first and foremost a county famed for its timber buildings, from the eleventh-century church at Greensted to the early and mighty barns at Cressing Temple, and a wealth of timber-framed medieval houses. Later periods have also made their contribution, from Georgian town houses to Victorian and Edwardian industrial and civic buildings, and from important exemplars of early Modern Movement architecture to the major monument of High Tech at Stansted Airport.

Book excerpt: Hatfield Forest is the most intact and evocative medieval hunting forest in the country. Beyond its historical significance, it is a haven for over 3,500 species of wildlife and a place of leisure and relaxation for visitors. This short guide introduces you to the Forest's rich past, reveals some of its fascinating features and explains how the National Trust manages its precious habitat. The best surviving example of a royal hunting forest still in existence, Hatfield Forest has survived for over a thousand years and has seen many owners, from kings to commoners. The traditional woodland management techniques of coppicing and pollarding have been practised here for centuries. It is largely thanks to these continued practices that the Forest's ecology and landscape have been preserved. Today, it is one of the largest areas of land in East Anglia which has never been ploughed and represents an important habitat for rare species. This book tells the story of the Forest from its beginnings as part of the Wild Wood 12,000 years ago, to the challenges it faces in the future.

Book The Puritan Ideology of Mobility

Download or read book The Puritan Ideology of Mobility written by Scott McDermott and published by Anthem Press. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Puritan Ideology of Mobility: Corporatism, the Politics of Place, and the Founding of New England Towns before 1650 examines the ideology that English Puritans developed to justify migration: their migration from England to New England, migrations from one town to another within New England, and, often, their repatriation to the mother country. Puritan leaders believed firmly that nations, colonies, and towns were all “bodies politic,” that is, living and organic social bodies. However, if a social body became distempered because of scarce resources or political or religious discord, it became necessary to create a new social body from the old in order to restore balance and harmony. The new social body was articulated through the social ritual of land distribution according to Aristotelian “distributive justice.” The book will trace this process at work in the founding of Ipswich and its satellite town in Massachusetts.
