The congressional power to do so had been used sparingly until the early 1980s, when three federal judges were removed by the Senate in almost as many years. Through extensive use of original transcripts, Mary Volcansek analyzes the criminal and congressional proceedings that led to the Senate's conviction and removal of U.S. Judges Harry Claiborne (Nevada), Walter Nixon (Mississippi), and Alcee Hastings (Florida). Claiborne and Nixon both had already been convicted of felonies, yet they demanded impeachment and trial rather than resign their judicial appointments. They and Hastings portrayed themselves as victims of vendettas, claims that altered little when the Senate considered their cases. Volcansek explores various political and legal explanations for the rise in impeachments, among them the Judicial Conduct Act of 1980; the Public Integrity Office of the U.S. Department of Justice; partisanship and ideology; and judicial corruption. She also shows how the cases of Claiborne, Hastings, and Nixon are more than studies in judicial misconduct: the events leading to their Senate convictions, she is convinced, allow evaluation of how law enforcement, the Judicial Conduct Act, impeachment, and politics fit together. All the stars of the day (Alekhine, Bogoljubow, Grünfeld, Maróczy, Réti, Spielmann, Tarrasch and Tartakover) played except Capablanca and Lasker, but it was Akiba Rubinstein who was to turn in an outstanding success scoring an undefeated 111⁄2 from 14 to finish a point and half ahead of second place Tartakover and two and a half (!) points ahead of Alekhine. This was the first book ever written by American grandmaster Larry Evans. The then 16-year-old master self-published it in 1948 with English descriptive notation, no diagrams, with a plastic ring binding, mimeographed. He was persuaded to revise and update it, making use of modern figurine algebraic notation, many diagrams not to mention annotations that have made him one of the most popular chess writers of our era. Just when this book was being prepared to go to press, however, the tragic news flashed around the world: Larry Evans had died. As far as chess in America was concerned, he had been a national treasure. But his loss was not felt only in the U.S. He was admired as a chessplayer, journalist and author worldwide. As noted by John Donaldson in his Foreword, this book marked the beginning of what turned out to be one of the longest and most productive literary careers in American chess history. It also tragically turned out to be Larry's swan song. It is unlikely that the chess world will ever see another chessplayer who accomplished so much both with the pieces and with the pen.

From 1940 to 1944 Addy was first an amateur resister and later a full-time secret agent, working with the likes of Ian Garrow, Pat O’Leary, and Guido Zembsch-Schreve. She also acted as a courier, flying to Lisbon to deliver and receive secret messages from British intelligence. In addition, she became romantically involved with a Danish secret agent and married him after the war.
