Book Has God Not Chosen the Poor

Download or read book Has God Not Chosen the Poor written by David Edgar and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2001-03-01 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The significance of the Epistle of James within early Christianity, when not neglected, has been disputed. In recent years the letter, and its author, have received renewed attention, and this contribution to the revival examines the way in which the author and his addressees are depicted within the social world of emerging Christianity. Edgar finds strong points of contact with the sayings of Jesus and with early Christian itinerant proclaimers, who are often seen as having been active in preserving and transmitting these sayings. The Epistle challenges the shaky commitment of its readers to their new allegiance, and, in the light of the coming of God's eschatological ruoe, employs the model of patronage to lay out the choice between loyalty to God and identification with the earthly value system dominated by the rich.

Book The New Chosen People Revised and Expanded Edition

Download or read book The New Chosen People Revised and Expanded Edition written by William W. Klein and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2015-11-25 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Controversy rages on about God's choosing people for salvation. Are only the few elect? Rather than typically beginning with the preconceptions of systematic theologies, Dr. William Klein takes up this question by searching for a biblical theology of election. He surveys the OT contexts of God's choosing individuals--prophets, priests, kings--to serve divine purposes, and considers God's election of the nation of Israel as his special people. This OT study proposes that God's election is both individual and corporate, but not always determinative. Individuals entered the people of God by birth, but not all the people found salvation. Faith in Yahweh was required. This book traces these elective understandings through the intertestamental literature, identifying continuities and shifts. The bulk of the study, and the heart of the argument, focus on the New Testament. Klein identifies concepts of election, and relationships between writers in the gospels, the Lucan material, Paul's writings, and the rest. The new covenant, God choosing the church in Christ, emphasizes election as corporate, while the individual election of Jesus' disciples and of Paul raises the question whether such chosenness is necessarily salvific. In closing, Klein discusses the most engaging and divisive questions around God's election, and offers a real challenge to today's church.

Download or read book God s Chosen written by G. Grace Small and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: God's Chosen: Understanding Spiritual Warfare is a book that inspires, encourages and teaches Christians to effectively manage warfare and live victoriously for Christ. It offers Christians a fresh look at the basis of putting on God's full armor and learning to use the means God affords, namely His strength and mighty power. As Believers prepare to fight triumphantly against evil and wicked forces, we come to an understanding of the challenge, purpose and outcome of spiritual warfare. Putting on God's armor and standing firm in Him, amply equips us to fight offensively and defensively. Knowing Jesus fixed the fight in our favor produces confidence to oppose the enemy and remain faithful to God. Through conscious engagement in this fight we win against all odds. In 2005, during prayer, the Holy Spirit inspired me to write this book on spiritual warfare. I was going through a precarious time and as usual, I sought God in prayer and study of the Word. The Holy Spirit led me to Ephesians 6:10-18. As I studied and meditated, God moved me to begin writing on the subject of warfare. During research and study, I discovered there are not enough books addressing this phase of our journey. Therefore, I saw the need to press through varied attacks to produce this important work.

Download or read book In the Image of God written by Shirley Mayhood and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-05-02 with total page 1104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We were created in the image of our Creator! It was a perfect and loving relationship, but when Adam and Eve chose evil over that relationship with their Creator, that image of God we were created with was lost to us.In our world today, many Christians are more attuned to the world than to God's Word. Many seem to have the attitude that because they are in the world, they must be like the world. But this world is not anything like God, and Christians need to come to the certain knowledge that they are in the world, but not of the world. We as God's kids are not to live in the image of a lost world careening into a dark and bottomless pit of pure evil.Jesus Christ became our atoning sacrifice so that you and I can return to that original image of God that we were created to be. This ought to be our goal in life: to be like God, to do our very best to live in the image of God.This book is a daily devotional of biblical attitudes, characteristics of Jesus Christ, the deep meaning and example of God's amazing precepts and loving actions.God gave us a book to show us His right and loving law, but when Jesus came, He condensed all of the Father's law into just two:Jesus said to him, "'You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets." (Matthew 22:37-40)It is my sincere hope that this book of devotions will help all who read it to know God better, to love Him more, and to understand what the true image of God means.451

Book James in Postcolonial Perspective

Download or read book James in Postcolonial Perspective written by K. Jason Coker and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2015-08-01 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James confronts the exploitive wealthy; it also opposes Pauline hybridity. K. Jason Coker argues that postcolonial perspectives allow us to understand how these themes converge in the letter. James opposes the exploitation of the Roman Empire and a peculiar Pauline form of hybridity that compromises with it; refutes Roman cultural practices, such as the patronage system and economic practices, that threaten the identity of the letter’s recipients; and condemns those who would transgress the boundaries between purity and impurity, God and “world.”

The awesome nature of that mission and vision inspires and animates this volume, Now to God Who Is Able. An international array of Christian pastors, scholar activists, parachurch ministry leaders, and community organizers reflect critically on the theological, biblical, contextual, and practical dimensions of what it means to bear witness of the gospel orientated and anchored in God’s justice. Using a trinitarian framework within the prophetic call to do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with God, this book speaks to the modern challenges and opportunities of the pastoral vocation, ecclesiology, hermeneutics, homiletics, ecumenism, theological education, and missional theology. Each essay and this book honor the more than four decades of ministry of Mark Labberton, who retired as president of Fuller Theological Seminary in 2023.

Book The Decalogue in Jewish and Christian Tradition

Download or read book The Decalogue in Jewish and Christian Tradition written by Henning Graf Reventlow and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2011-06-23 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of papers arrives from the eighth annual symposium between the Chaim Rosenberg School of Jewish Studies of Tel Aviv University and the Faculty of Protestant Theology of the University of Ruhr, Bochum held in Bochum, June 2007. The general theme of the Decalogue was examined in its various uses by both Jewish and Christian traditions throughout the centuries to the present. Three papers deal with the origin of the Decalogue: Yair Hoffman on the rare mentioning of the Decalogue in the Hebrew Bible outside the Torah; E. L. Greenstein considers that already A. ibn Ezra doubted that God himself spoke in the Ten Commandments and states that more likely their rhetoric indicates it was Moses who proclaimed the Decalogue; A. Bar-Tour speaks about the cognitive aspects of the Decalogue revelation story and its frame. The second part considers the later use of the Decalogue: G. Nebe describes its use with Paul; P. Wick discusses the symbolic radicalization of two commandments in James and the Sermon on the Mount; A. Oppenheimer explains the removal of the Decalogue from the daily Shem'a prayer as a measure against the minim's claim of a higher religious importance of the Decalogue compared to the Torah; W. Geerlings examines Augustine's quotations of the Decalogue; H. Reventlow depicts its central place in Luther's catechisms; Y. Yacobson discusses its role with Hasidism. The symposium closes with papers on systematic themes: C. Frey follows a possible way to legal universalism; G. Thomas describes the Decalogue as an "Ethics of Risk"; F. H. Beyer/M. Waltemathe seek an educational perspective.

Book excerpt: It’s one thing to know the story of the Bible. It’s another thing to live it. Grounded in carefully selected Scripture, Believe, NKJV is a unique spiritual growth experience that takes you on a journey to think, act, and be more like Jesus. Pastor Randy Frazee walks you through the ten key beliefs of the Christian faith, the ten key Practices of a Jesus-follower, and the ten key Virtues that characterize someone who is becoming more like Jesus. Every believer needs to ask these three questions: What do I believe? What should I do? Who am I becoming? What you believe in your heart will define who you become. God wants you to become like Jesus - it is the most truthful and powerful way to live - and the journey to becoming like Jesus begins by thinking like Jesus. When you study the life of Jesus you will notice a distinct pattern: Jesus faithfully lived in a purposeful way. Jesus compared the Christian life to a vine. He is the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in the vine of Christ, over time you will produce amazing and scrumptious fruit at the end of your branches for all to see and taste. You become like Jesus. Each chapter uses short topical passages from the New King James Version (NKJV) to help you live the story of the Bible. As you journey through this Bible, whether in a group or on your own, one simple truth will become undeniably clear: what you believe drives everything.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen Kirkendall, ChFC (chartered financial consultant), has helped Christians with financial investments for many years through mortgage loans, life insurance, investments, estate planning, retirement-income planning, and wealth management. He realized early on that most Christians have serious questions about tithing, but there seemed to be no solid answers. He decided to dig deeper into the truth in the Scriptures. There are too many wolves on TV, the Internet, and YouTube. They state that pastors who talk about tithing are thieves and that tithing is unscriptural and that they're getting away with it because no one is challenging them with the full truth. Churches have broken up over tithing. There are marriages that have ended in divorce because of tithing. The real, full truth needs to come out. It is so important that God uses more than seven chapters to explain! The result is the biblically driven study Necessary for Jesus. Most Christians know what was necessary for Jesus. Seventy prophecies fulfilled. Why don't Christians know what is necessary for Jesus? Seventy rewards for helping Jesus. During his search for answers, Kirkendall knew he could honestly answer questions about money by going straight to God's teaching""the Bible. Stephen also realized that when he used the Scriptures, it had to be copy-and-paste. All Christians, especially the church teachers and leaders, need to know the full truth about tithing and how the lessons about it in the Scriptures still apply today. Giving back to God is the wisest investment Christians can make. It will not only lead to financial security but also to a completely blessed and prosperous life. • ISBN :
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Code Of Honor written by Ashish Raichur and published by All Peoples Church & World Outreach, Bangalore, India. This book was released on 2014-03-02 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics has to do with moral code, values and principles. While a code of conduct can be discussed and documented, the standards of ethics itself does not provide the power to keep them. The power to adhere to moral values and principles comes from within each individual. As Christian ministers, our power to walk morally upright comes from our dependence on the Lord Himself and through the grace He provides. No code of conduct, no teaching on ethics, no wise counsel or set of guidelines can help a Christian minister who does not take his/her personal walk with God seriously. In the Church today, where many of us are pressing in to more of the manifestation of God's power, anointing, signs and wonders, miracles and healings, prophetic and the supernatural - a call to godly standards of life and conduct may not be very popular. Preachers and ministers are sought after, mom for what they can manifest in one hour behind the pulpit, than for the life they live off it. It is time for us as ministers of Christ to re-establish standards of serving "God acceptably with reverence and godly fear." (Hebrews 12:28). That is what this book is about - an easy-to-read collection of ethical values, godly standards and practical wisdom for men and women in Christian ministry. Your life and ministry is sure to be enriched, if you will read this book. This book will be a useful resource for Bible Colleges, Seminaries, Bible Training Centers and wherever men and women are being trained for Christian ministry. This will also be a good handbook to teach at Pastors' Conferences and Seminars. Pastors and other ministry leaders will find it useful to use this resource as they train and prepare their ministry teams. Download or read book Reading While Black written by Esau McCaulley and published by InterVarsity Press. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in the American South, Esau McCaulley knew firsthand the ongoing struggle between despair and hope that marks the lives of some in the African American context. A key element in the fight for hope, he discovered, has long been the practice of Bible reading and interpretation that comes out of traditional Black churches. This ecclesial tradition is often disregarded or viewed with suspicion by much of the wider church and academy, but it has something vital to say. Reading While Black is a personal and scholarly testament to the power and hope of Black biblical interpretation. At a time in which some within the African American community are questioning the place of the Christian faith in the struggle for justice, New Testament scholar McCaulley argues that reading Scripture from the perspective of Black church tradition is invaluable for connecting with a rich faith history and addressing the urgent issues of our times. He advocates for a model of interpretation that involves an ongoing conversation between the collective Black experience and the Bible, in which the particular questions coming out of Black communities are given pride of place and the Bible is given space to respond by affirming, challenging, and, at times, reshaping Black concerns. McCaulley demonstrates this model with studies on how Scripture speaks to topics often overlooked by white interpreters, such as ethnicity, political protest, policing, and slavery. Ultimately McCaulley calls the church to a dynamic theological engagement with Scripture, in which Christians of diverse backgrounds dialogue with their own social location as well as the cultures of others. Reading While Black moves the conversation forward.
