Book Harvey s Essentials of Arithmetic Vol 2

Download or read book Harvey s Essentials of Arithmetic Vol 2 written by L. D. Harvey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvey's Essentials of Arithmetic, Vol. 2: With Everyday Problems Relating to Agriculture, Commerce, and Other Vocations This book is intended to cover, in particular, the work of the fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth years. It begins, however, with a comprehensive review of notation and numeration, and the four fundamental operations, which makes it a book complete in itself. A thorough treatment is given of common and decimal fractions, denominate numbers, percentage and its applications, and other subjects usually taught in the upper grades. Great care has been taken to eliminate useless and obsolete subjects and to fill their places with matters relating to the present-day interests of the pupils and to modern business problems. The main purpose of the book is to secure accuracy and speed in the handling of numbers, and sureness in the interpretation of such problems as come within the range of the pupils experience. There is thorough drill in abstract number processes. In their concrete application an effort has been made to substitute for unreal or unstimulated conditions many problems of a prevocational character relating directly to the pupils experience, such as problems in manual training and household arts, commerce, agriculture, etc. Many problems suggested by recent national legislation have also been included, such as problems relating to the United States Parcel Post, Postal Savings Banks, the Federal Income Tax, the Tariff of 1913, and the new Federal Banking law. The reviews throughout the book are cumulative and thorough. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. For nearly forty years, David Harvey has written and lectured on Capital, becoming one of the world's foremost Marx scholars. Based on his recent lectures, and following the success of his companion to the first volume of Capital, Harvey turns his attention to Volume 2, aiming to bring his depth of learning to a broader audience, guiding first-time readers through a fascinating and often-neglected text. Whereas Volume 1 focuses on production, Volume 2 looks at how value comes into being through the buying and selling of goods. Harvey also introduces elements from Volume 3 on credit and finance to help illustrate aspects of the contemporary crisis.

Book Energy and Entropy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Harvey S. Leff
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2020-08-26
  • ISBN : 1000170349
  • Pages : 331 pages

Download or read book Energy and Entropy written by Harvey S. Leff and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-08-26 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy is typically regarded as understandable, despite its multiple forms of storage and transfer. Entropy, however, is an enigma, in part because of the common view that it represents disorder. That view is flawed and hides entropy’s connection with energy. In fact, macroscopic matter stores internal energy, and that matter’s entropy is determined by how the energy is stored. Energy and entropy are intimately linked. Energy and Entropy: A Dynamic Duo illuminates connections between energy and entropy for students, teachers, and researchers. Conceptual understanding is emphasised where possible through examples, analogies, figures, and key points. Features: Qualitative demonstration that entropy is linked to spatial and temporal energy spreading, with equilibrium corresponding to the most equitable distribution of energy, which corresponds to maximum entropy Analysis of energy and entropy of matter and photons, with examples ranging from rubber bands, cryogenic cooling, and incandescent lamps to Hawking radiation of black holes Unique coverage of numerical entropy, the 3rd law of thermodynamics, entropic force, dimensionless entropy, free energy, and fluctuations, from Maxwell's demon to Brownian ratchets, plus attempts to violate the second law of thermodynamics

Book The Last Lion Volume 2

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Manchester
  • Publisher : Little, Brown
  • Release : 2012-11-06
  • ISBN : 0316244872
  • Pages : 754 pages

Download or read book The Last Lion Volume 2 written by William Manchester and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 754 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of William Manchester's masterful account of Winston Churchill's life. Alone is the second volume of William Manchester's brilliant three-volume biography of Winston Churchill. In this volume, we witness the war within, before the colossal war to come. During this period, Churchill was tested as few men are: relentlessly pursued by creditors, disowned by his own party, vociferously dismissed by the press as a warmonger, and twice nearly lost his seat in Parliament. Yet despite his personal and political troubles, Churchill managed to assemble a vast, underground intelligence network-both within the British government and on the continent-which provided him with more complete and accurate information on Germany than the British government. Recognizing the horrifying truth, Churchill stood almost alone against Nazi aggression and the sordid British and French policy of appeasement. Manchester's luminous portrait never loses sight of Churchill the man-a man with limitations, especially his callousness toward others (including his supporters) and his recklessness, which could border on the foolhardy; but also a man whose vision was global and whose courage was boundless. Here is Churchill as a light in the approaching darkness, readying himself for the terrible stand to come.
