Download or read book Harvesting Minds written by Roy F. Fox and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1996-09-24 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens when kids are held captive to an endless stream of MTV-like television commercials? Armed with a tape recorder, Roy F. Fox, a language and literacy researcher, spent two years interviewing over 200 students in rural Missouri schools. Why? Because more than eight million students in 40% of America's schools, every day, watch TV commercials as part of Channel One's news broadcast. Students read commercials far more often than they read Romeo and Juliet. These ads now constitute America's only national curriculum. In this ground-breaking study, Fox explores how these commercials affect kids' thinking, language, and behavior. He found that such ads do indeed help shape children into more active consumers. For example, months after a pizza commercial had stopped airing, students reported that one brief scene showed a couple on an airplane. The plane's seats, students noted, were red with little blue squares that have arrows sticking out of them. Also, kids blurred one type of TV text with another, often mistaking Pepsi ads for public service announcements. Kids replayed commercials by repeating or reconstructing an ad in some way—by singing songs, jingles, and catch-phrases; by cheering at sports events (one crowd at a school football game erupted into the Domino's Pizza cheer); by creating art projects that mirrored specific commercials, and even by dreaming about commercials (the product, not the dreamer, is the star).
Download or read book Harvesting the Biosphere written by Vaclav Smil and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2012-12-21 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An interdisciplinary and quantitative account of human claims on the biosphere's stores of living matter, from prehistoric hunting to modern energy production. The biosphere—the Earth's thin layer of life—dates from nearly four billion years ago, when the first simple organisms appeared. Many species have exerted enormous influence on the biosphere's character and productivity, but none has transformed the Earth in so many ways and on such a scale as Homo sapiens. In Harvesting the Biosphere, Vaclav Smil offers an interdisciplinary and quantitative account of human claims on the biosphere's stores of living matter, from prehistory to the present day. Smil examines all harvests—from prehistoric man's hunting of megafauna to modern crop production—and all uses of harvested biomass, including energy, food, and raw materials. Without harvesting of the biomass, Smil points out, there would be no story of human evolution and advancing civilization; but at the same time, the increasing extent and intensity of present-day biomass harvests are changing the very foundations of civilization's well-being. In his detailed and comprehensive account, Smil presents the best possible quantifications of past and current global losses in order to assess the evolution and extent of biomass harvests. Drawing on the latest work in disciplines ranging from anthropology to environmental science, Smil offers a valuable long-term, planet-wide perspective on human-caused environmental change.

Book excerpt: From the author of the #1 New York Times bestsellers Small Great Things and Mad Honey, a novel exploring the story of a young woman overcome by the demands of having a family. Paige has only a few vivid memories of her mother, who abandoned her at five years old. Now, having left her father behind in Chicago for dreams of art school and marriage to an ambitious young doctor, she finds herself with a child of her own. But her mother's absence and shameful memories of her past force her to doubt whether she could ever be capable of bringing joy and meaning into the life of her child, gifts her own mother never gave. Harvesting the Heart is written with astonishing clarity and evocative detail, convincing in its depiction of emotional pain, love, and vulnerability, and recalls the writing of Alice Hoffman and Kristin Hannah. Out of Paige's struggle to find wholeness, Jodi Picoult crafts an absorbing novel peopled by richly drawn characters, and explores motherhood with a power and depth only she is capable of. “A brilliant, moving examination of motherhood, brimming with detail and emotion.” —Richmond Times-Dispatch “Jodi Picoult explores the fragile ground of ambivalent motherhood in her lush second novel. This story belongs to… the lucky reader.” —The New York Times Book Review
Download or read book American Harvest written by Marie Mutsuki Mockett and published by Graywolf Press. This book was released on 2020-04-07 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An epic story of the American wheat harvest, the politics of food, and the culture of the Great Plains For over one hundred years, the Mockett family has owned a seven-thousand-acre wheat farm in the panhandle of Nebraska, where Marie Mutsuki Mockett’s father was raised. Mockett, who grew up in bohemian Carmel, California, with her father and her Japanese mother, knew little about farming when she inherited this land. Her father had all but forsworn it. In American Harvest, Mockett accompanies a group of evangelical Christian wheat harvesters through the heartland at the invitation of Eric Wolgemuth, the conservative farmer who has cut her family’s fields for decades. As Mockett follows Wolgemuth’s crew on the trail of ripening wheat from Texas to Idaho, they contemplate what Wolgemuth refers to as “the divide,” inadvertently peeling back layers of the American story to expose its contradictions and unhealed wounds. She joins the crew in the fields, attends church, and struggles to adapt to the rhythms of rural life, all the while continually reminded of her own status as a person who signals “not white,” but who people she encounters can’t quite categorize. American Harvest is an extraordinary evocation of the land and a thoughtful exploration of ingrained beliefs, from evangelical skepticism of evolution to cosmopolitan assumptions about food production and farming. With exquisite lyricism and humanity, this astonishing book attempts to reconcile competing versions of our national story.

Book excerpt: Kim Liggett draws on her childhood during the Satanic Panic for a chilling tale of magic in The Last Harvest, winner of the 2017 Bram Stoker Award. "I plead the blood." Those were the last words seventeen-year-old golden boy quarterback Clay Tate heard rattling from his dad's throat when he discovered him dying on the barn floor of the Neely cattle ranch, clutching a crucifix to his chest. Now, on the first anniversary of the Midland, Oklahoma, slaughter, the whole town's looking at Clay like he might be next to go over the edge. Clay wants to forget the past, but the sons and daughters of the Preservation Society—a group of prominent farmers his dad accused of devil worship—won't leave him alone. Including Ali, his longtime crush, who suddenly wants to reignite their romance after a year of silence, and hated rival Tyler Neely, who's behaving like they're old friends. Even as Clay tries to reassure himself, creepy glances turn to sinister stares and strange coincidences build to gruesome rituals, but when he can never prove that any of it happened, Clay worries he might be following his dad down the path to insanity...or that something far more terrifying lies in wait around the corner.

Download or read book Lucille s Harvest written by Lucille Hintze and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2002-12-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a gathering of thoughts and impressions that occurred to the author throughout her life. These themes of love and forgiveness, of sorrow and tragedy, and of moving beyond the "cry of mourning," are expressed in both story form and in poetry. And by these means, we take the journey ourselves. The stories range from resourcefulness of a slave girl, Sarah, in the tale of "The Two Queens" to Dawn, an inhabitant of the planet Ur, in the science fiction "The Journey." In a play, Amos thunders disaster if Israel does not change its ways, and a poem, "Laid Waste in a Single Night," mourns the birth of our nuclear era. But we are not left long in these darker spots. Lighter haiku of love are sprinkled throughout, while poems of "Resurrection," and the bittersweet love letters of Hosea engage us. The reader resonates as the book strives to make sense of these happenings. And how working through these experiences, we gain strength and thus our lives become more meaningful. As the traveler says at the end of "The Journey," "...life is not the same once one has shared the mystery of love."

Book excerpt: In a small community hidden back in the woods, swamp and marsh land, is three-hundred-acre farm. John and Beth Averley are the proud owners of this quiet and laid-back retreat they call home in Ontario, Canada. You see, life in the city for John and Beth was downright depressing, overrated, and as far as they were concerned, no place to bring up a family. They were looking for a tranquil place to build a solid foundation, that they could call home and would not crumble, like their lives were about to do if they were to stay in the city any longer. Finding the perfect place was relentless day after day, until one day right in front of them, their dream had come true, time and patience had finely paid off . John would always say Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. Theres a problem with that saying, and it would alter the Averleys lives forever. All things are truly beautiful in their way, but sometimes beauty can deceive the beholder. Therefore, whatever you sow, isnt always what you will reap.
Download or read book White Unto Harvest written by Winston Hoskins and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2012-09-28 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book written to instruct and inform Christians about the Power that we have resident in us. Jesus tells the disciples in Luke: 10; l9, Behold, I give unto you Power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you. This generation has failed to teach what the Bible tells us. Because we are worried about what the world has to say: (we want to be politically correct). And as a result this generation has very little knowledge of what the Word has to teach us. This book gives the reader the Biblical Facts about those who should be rulers over us and what The Word has to say about rulers, isnt what the politicians want you to believe. When those in charge over us are ungodly men then the laws that they make are to help them keep their positions, their agenda, and their authority. I believe that you will enjoy reading this book. And you will want all of your friends and associates to read it also.
