The time of picking and method of handling pears vary widely in accordance with the manner in which the fruit is to be consumed. For fresh shipment the fruit will not shrivel if picked after the lenticels are thoroughly corked over. A much superior product will be secured, however, if the initial picking is delayed until at least two weeks later than this time. Book The Relation of Maturity of California Plums to Shipping and Dessert Quality Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Relation of Maturity of California Plums to Shipping and Dessert Quality Since California plums are produced two to three thousand miles from the principal eastern markets, the harvesting and shipping of them is a most important problem. Eight to twelve days. Must usually elapse between the time of loading the fruit into refrigerator cars and its arrival on the market. From one to three days additional maybe necessary before it reaches the retail purchaser. Under these condi tions it is necessary, therefore, that highly perishable fruits, such as plums, be harvested and shipped before becoming tree ripe, if they are to carry satisfactorily. Firmness is not only essential for success ful long-distance shipment but after the necessary rehandling the fruit must be delivered to the retailer in a firm, sound condition. On the other hand, if picked too early, plums will not ripen with good dessert quality. In general, the nearer tree ripe the fruit when picked, the better the dessert quality when fully ripe. The commercial grower and shipper must therefore pick and handle the fruit so it Will arrive in a satisfactory market condition, and at the same time secure the highest possible dessert quality. In View of the insistent demand from dealers that nothing but hard fruit be shipped, there has developed a tendency to harvest a portion of the crop at least, so early as to sacrifice considerable of its eating quality. This investigation accordingly Was undertaken to determine as accurately as possible under existing transportation conditions when the leading plum varieties should be harvested. Book Prepackaging Pears at Shipping Point Classic Reprint

Download or read book Prepackaging Pears at Shipping Point Classic Reprint written by James Brian Fountain and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Prepackaging Pears at Shipping Point Packaging pears in consumer trays at shipping point costs about cents more per pound for packaging, transport, storage, and overhead than place-packing pears in standard wood boxes. A molded-pulp pear tray and fiberboard ship ping containers to hold the packaged trays were designed. All nine of the commercially important pear sizes can be packaged in the tray. The pear tray protected pears better than three fruit trays tested. Two heat-shrinkable fihns tested as over wraps for the trays immobilized the pears and minimized skin discoloration. Although some film wrinkling occurred at time of packaging and some trays became distorted during long periods of storage, package appearance was usually satis factory and the pears were salable. In 23 transcontinental rail test shipments, hard and green pears packaged in consumer trays and packed in fiberboard shipping containers arrived in eastern markets with less bruising and discolor ation than similar pears place-packed in standard wood boxes. The trays were packed in five and six layers in the shipping containers, with pads on top to form a compression pack. The pears were held in cold storage for up to 6 months before shipment. Book Pear Growing in California Classic Reprint

Download or read book Pear Growing in California Classic Reprint written by Luther Dent Davis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pear Growing in California Seeds of commercial pears were planted in the early days of mining in the Sierra foothills of the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys, and a few oriental pears were set out by the Chinese immigrants. Later, graft ing wood and grafted trees of many varieties, brought from the missions, from eastern states, and even from Europe, were grown to supply fruit to miners and other new settlers. With the discovery of gold, certain enterprising young men who had come in search of the precious ore found that more money could be made by supplying fruit for the satisfaction of the prodigal miners, than by panning gold; and pear growing gained impetus. According to Wickson, the Bartlett was brought around the Horn in 1850 and planted in the Napa Valley. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
