Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secretary's First Report, April, 1915: Harvard College, Class of 1914 Your Treasurer begs to submit the following report of all the receipts and expenditures of the Class Treasury from January lst, 1914, to January lst, 1915. The bank balance on January lst, 1914, has been materially increased by the pledges of members, although it is surprising what a small percentage of the class, only 65 per cent., have contributed. Another effort will be made very soon to persuade the other 35 per cent. To join in the fund and it is hoped they will cooperate quickly and generously. The amount of' money pledged for this year, still unpaid, is comparatively small, but its prompt payment would be of great assistance to the class. The expenditures of the class for the past year were rather heavy, due to the fact that the entertainments which were given during last spring were expensive and, in no case except the picnic, did they pay for themselves. The Class Day Committee was particularly successful in the management of the festivities last June and has already paid to the treasury, with the promise of another substantial sum in the near future. The Photograph Committee, which did so well with the Class Album, has repaid a good proportion of the sum lent them by the class, but their debt can be still further reduced if those who have not bought albums, would secure them from Richard D. Walker, Alpine Street, Malden, Mass, by send ing him a cheque for plus the cost of mailing. Weight of album is five pounds. Upon the advice of a number of graduates who are close ly in touch with the financial situation this year, your treasurer has deposited what money was available for invest ment in the Massachusetts Trust Company for the present, rather than follow the precedent of many previous classes who have purchased bonds and other securities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Secretary's Second Report, 1914: Harvard College Class of 1908 The Class of Nineteen Hundred and Eight hereby adds one more volume to its growing list of publications. This is primarily a list of addresses issued to help our widely scattered class of seven hundred men to keep in touch with one another. As such it will fulfil no mean destiny. To this statistical information the Class has seen fit to add some personal narratives. The vitality and worth of these depend largely upon their intimate revelation of the authors. Therefore the secretary has firmly refrained from writing accounts of men who have not replied. The bulk of the Class found time to comply with our request, based as it was on a tradition of long standing. The accounts vary greatly in length and in substance. This was inevitable at first. Probably the variation in length will always exist. It is hoped, however, that the variation in substance will not be so great in our next Report four years hence, after the Class has realized the true value of the fuller and more intimate histories. There is no man in 1908 who will not read these little stories with keen interest. Here he may read of wanderings in many lands, of circumnavigating the globe, of adventures in every realm of human knowledge and endeavor. As in all times, the motive force has been, now pure unrest, now the lure of gold, and now a Lady's Eyes. But in the end no work has seemed to be too great and none too humble to include a member of the Class of 1908! Most seriously, however, this is no casual record of achievement. There is surely much here to ponder over. There is the story of men who have had the vision to see and the courage to act when a change of work was right, who have had grit to push forth into new fields when they realized they had chosen badly. In response to my circular, asking for information, I have heard from all the graduates and, with one exception, from all the non-graduates. The Class is indebted to Robins for the heliotype of our part Of the procession of Classes to the Stadium on Class Day, June 16, 1914, and to Kennedy for the heliotype of the bronze tablet in the new wing of the Gray Herbarium. It is a remarkable fact that we have the same Class Secretary and Class Committee as were chosen during our Senior year. TO my associates on the Class Committee I once more desire to' express my appreciation of the ever ready and cheerful assistance they have rendered during our fifty years of service. With the best wishes for all, and with the hope that, as the years go by and our numbers grow less, we shall all the more closer keep together.
