Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College, Class of 1882, Secretary's Report: January 1, 1896, to October 31, 1900 I present to you herewith Secretary's Report N 0. V., covering the period - from Jan. I, I896, to the middle or last of the year 1900. I had hoped to have this Report ready for distribution in the autumn of 1900, but much of the necessary information came in so slowly that the returns would have been far from complete at that time. I thank you all for your cordial assistance, and for the many expressions of interest in the report and of friendship for the Secretary. The duties of the position are a pleasure to me; and, fortunately per haps for the class, I have the time as well as the inclination to devote to the work. AS the years go on, I think that the class feeling grows stronger, and the memory of those happy years that we spent together in Cambridge binds us more closely. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College, Class of 1900: Secretary's Third Report, June 1910 IN presenting to the class my Third Report I wish to thank the members for the interest they have shown and the help they have given in its preparation. There are always a few men who do not respond to the appeals of the Secretary, but I am glad to say that this proportion was very small, so that the report is, I feel, very complete. I shall try hard, however, to reduce, before the time for the next report comes, the list of classmates from whom nothing has been heard; and I shall be very grateful to any one who will write me concerning the men from whom I have no news. I wish particularly to learn the addresses of the following Lost Men Irving J. Cross, Jacob P. Freeman, James L. Givan, John P. Hinchey, John D. Horgan, Louis La Maida. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College, Class of 1900: Secretary's Fourth Report, June, 1915 With this Fourth Report I send my greetings to all the members of the Class and thank them for the time and trouble they have spent in helping me make up the volume. It is no easy or pleasant task, I realize, for a busy man to sit down and exhume dates and the exact details of his doings since we left college. The fact that such a large proportion of the Class have sent me the desired information is one in which we may all find reason for satisfaction. On examining the records in this report it is apparent that all over the country the members of the Class coming to the front in all professions and occupations. This is inter esting, but not surprising, for even when we were graduated it was evident that many of our men would win fame. The principal deduction to be drawn from the autobiographies as a whole is that our men have the happy faculty of getting results. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College, Class of 1880: Secretary's Report, No. Vi., June, 1900 Ustom seems to require from the class secretary a preface to his quinquennial report, but I do not understand that it is a law that it shall be read. It often serves as a vehicle for bringing to the attention of the class their remissness in answer ing the secretary's circulars and letters. I will admit that I have already accumulated some material which might be worked off in that way, but I am not yet in a condition of mind to use it. The busy men, from force of habit, have generally answered by return mail, and if some of those with time to burn have used my circulars for lighters, I confess to a secret admiration of their independent situation. Then, again, many circulars brought back with them pleasant letters and messages from classmates long separated by time and space, the value of which is not to be measured. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1863 of Harvard College: July, 1863 to July, 1866 The expense of printing the Report, at present prices, may be large; and it is hoped that all Who feel disposed will contribute to defray it, and thus save so large a draft on the class fund. The fund, at pres ent, amounts to a sum which falls far short of what we need. The object of the fund is to meet the expenses of class meetings, and of such reunions as we are this year to enjoy, and of printing Re ports, and all other incidental expenses. We thus escape the disa greeable necessity of continual assessments, and ensure a larger attend ance at all meetings. The plan has succeeded well in other classes, some of whom have funds large enough to pay all their expenses, of every description. I know there are many calls for money just at the present time. The Alumni Hall Fund demands our attention. A subscription paper for the class fund, however, will be offered to you, and I hope you will put money enough in your purse to pay all bills which may arise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tenth Report of the Secretary of the Class of 1865, of Harvard College: July, 1900 to July, 1907 WE all mourn our beloved and most excellent Class Secretary, Thomas Franklin Brownell, who has taken care of us for all the thirty-six years until his death in 1901, and has accounted for us in our wanderings or struggles, so far, at least, as we helped him to do so. Changes have been less frequent in our lives of late. We have settled down, and there is less to be told. To some of us honors and degrees have come of later years, as the new Class Secretary has tried to Show. Some of our temporary members have attained distinction, as well as our learned graduates. There are some six of the graduates who have nothing to tell or will not tell it. I have stated What I could learn about them. During the past seven years eleven of our graduates have died, and seven of our temporary members. I have tried to get some account of their life-work for your information. Since the last Re port only two children have been born to the Class, the two boys of the present Class Secretary. This makes the whole number 157, not an average of two for the 88 who had degrees. I have tried to give the statistics in the summary of our total membership, of children living, and of marriages and deaths, but cannot be sure they are complete or correct, for possible lack of in formation. Please keep me posted of changes of address or of any other changes in your surroundings. Wishing you well and happy, and hoping to see you, every one. Of this, $404 dates back to our Senior year in college $630 to June, 1912; to June, 1913, and the serious total of to last June. Also, if you are one of a number of men who made their first deposit for a Class Album, or one of a number who now regret that they did not get one of these splendid Class souvenirs when in college, you have in the first case only to send the balance of $5, or in the second case to send $7 to have one of the Albums come to you.
