Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College Class of 1898: Quindecennial Report June, 1913 To the Members op the Class of 1898: I herewith submit the Third Report of the Class, and sincerely trust that it will meet with your hearty interest and approval. I had hoped that the Report would be completed and in your hands before you journeyed to Cambridge for that wonderful Quindecennial celebration, but my hopes were blasted and the work delayed by that ever-present band of procrastinators who are the bane of every Class Secretary, but who finally yield and send in their "lives" after repeated personal letters, telephone communications or telegrams. Incidentally I might add that these men should be made to realize that their dilatory actions try the patience and temper of the Class Secretary and place an added strain on the class funds. Truthfully, however, I must confess that the preparation of this Report has given me the deepest satisfaction and pleasure. I have done my best to make you all say, in your own way, what you have accomplished during the past fifteen years. I have striven hard to make some of you realize that membership in the Class of '98 really means something. I have striven harder to draw that bond of comradeship just a little tighter so that we may all be better '98 men, better Harvard men. If I have succeeded at all in my efforts, I shall be happy. Since the publication of the Second Report, July, 1907, it is my sad duty to record the death of the following eleven men: Herbert Claude Kahn, Ernest Wilhelm Sutton Pickhardt, Leland Emerson Bristol, Charles Winthrop Cutter, John Butler Swann, John Flint, Waldemar Koch, Henry Wood Fowler, Howard Curry Mason, Newell Cheever Cook, Louis Henry Martin. In the preparation of this Report I have endeavored to record the names of all men who appear in the Quinquennial Catalogue as '98 men; this in order to make my records conform with those of the University. Some of these men received their degrees with the Class, but as their affiliations are with other classes I have merely recorded their statistics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvard Law School is the oldest and, arguably, the most influential law school in the nation. U.S. presidents, Supreme Court justices, and foreign heads of state, along with senators, congressional representatives, social critics, civil rights activists, university presidents, state and federal judges, military generals, novelists, spies, Olympians, film and TV producers, CEOs, and one First Lady have graduated from the school since its founding in 1817. During its first century, Harvard Law School pioneered revolutionary educational ideas, including professional legal education within a university, Socratic questioning and case analysis, and the admission and training of students based on academic merit. But the school struggled to navigate its way through the many political, social, economic, and legal crises of the century, and it earned both scars and plaudits as a result. On the Battlefield of Merit offers a candid, critical, definitive account of a unique legal institution during its first century of influence. Daniel R. Coquillette and Bruce A. Kimball examine the school’s ties with institutional slavery, its buffeting between Federalists and Republicans, its deep involvement in the Civil War, its reluctance to admit minorities and women, its anti-Catholicism, and its financial missteps at the turn of the twentieth century. On the Battlefield of Merit brings the story of Harvard Law School up to 1909—a time when hard-earned accomplishment led to self-satisfaction and vulnerabilities that would ultimately challenge its position as the leading law school in the nation. A second volume will continue this history through the twentieth century.
