Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harvard College Class of 1890: Secretary's Report, No. 3 In response to several anxious inquiries from members of the Class as to the whereabouts of the Class Report, I am glad to sub mit to you the following results of my efforts. The issue has been postponed from time to time owing largely to the difficulty of get ting various articles and notices returned to me, which were neces sary to complete the publication. However, the Class will doubt less realize that this delay has not been without some compensation, as I can now report authoritatively that the Chairman of the Class Committee, and the member from Orange, N. J., have, after seven years of anxious search, succeeded in finding business positions, which at last accounts they still held. I regret to state that since the last Class Secretary's Report, we have lost by death ten members, Abbot, Frederick Seward Bates, Chard, Dame, Samuel Dexter of Chicago, Matthews, mckean, Pond, Rogers, and Kenneth M. Taylor. The picture of Dexter which accompanies this Report was reproduced from a group of the University Football Team taken in the fall of 1892, and that of Abbot is from a plate which his father, Edwin S. Abbot of Cambridge, had prepared from a Class picture taken in [890, and which is probably familiar to many. Some men who have disappeared from previous reports have been located in this one and it is the hope of your secretary that any man who has been connected with the class at any time will keep him posted as to his whereabouts and call and report when in this vicinity. To my inquiries for news the bulk of the answers have been cheerfully given, and though these have often erred from being too brief, this has probably been from lack of matter to record, a defect which time and a careful study of the model letters of reply which you will find at the end of this volume will remedy. I wish to thank especially the men who have furnished me with information about other members of the Class. There are still several as the Report shows from whom I have not heard. And I should be grateful for any information about them. In this Report I have dropped from the list of temporary mem bers of the Class the names of all men from whom I have not heard and who showed no interest in keeping up their connection with the Class. I have, on the other hand, included the names of several men who were associated with older classes, but who secured their degrees with the Class of '90. The reason for this is that these Reports must conform as far as possible with the Quinquennial Catalogue and the list of addresses of living gradu' ates, which is now issued yearly from the office of the University, and if the names of such men are not reported for the list from this class, they will not be reported at all. I regret to have already to record the deaths of four members of the Class since the issue of the last Report - Blunt, Burrage, Dexter of Boston and Endicott. The Class Fund is in a satisfactory state, and after the present year will more than meet the expenses of the Class. In the absence of the Chairman of the Class Committee and the Class Treasurer in Europe, Mr. Pulsifer and the Class Secretary at times have taken charge of the funds which it has seemed best to deposit for the present in Saving Banks rather than any other form of investment. It will be the one chance of a lifetime to march behind a brass band, at the head of the procession, to the Stadium on Class Day, lunch with our own Chief Marshal and see him head the column in the Yard on Commencement Day. Not until we have been out of College for twenty-five years more shall we again have a chance to see a member of our Class address the multitude at the Commencement Day exercises and talk to the President and Fellows and distinguished guests as an equal. The Anniversary Fund will have been raised, to what extent we do not now commit ourselves, and received by a surprised, and we trust not disappointed, Treasurer of the College, and all our troubles will have been turned over to our immediate successor, the Class of 1891. The Secre tary will promise not to send you any more importunate messages, and for five years you can look at his stamped envelopes without a qualm.
