Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colonial History of Hartford: Gathered From the Original Records, Illustrated The town of Hartford has passed the two hundred and seventy-fifth anniversary of its settlement, and, in a few years, it will have completed three centuries of history. The early town that the founders knew has long since disappeared. Features that were familiar for generations have been swept away by the ravages of time. Only a few landmarks now remain. Within the area of what was formerly a country town, a large city has grown into vigorous life. To the sons and daughters of Hartford, the story of this development during colonial times, is of interest. It may also serve a patriotic purpose, by helping her citizens to maintain a fellowship with the forefathers, and by awakening in her children of foreign descent a loyal regard for her traditions. In the hope of rendering such a service to the city, for which the author confesses a strong personal affection, this volume has been written, in the course of a study of the records, extending over many years. Students of Connecticut records have occasionally acknowledged their doubt whether certain fundamental facts, which concern both our local history and the founding of the Colony, have been correctly conceived. Views have become current, and have been passed on from one authority to another, which appeal for their warrant largely to records that have been lost, and are not in harmony with those that are extant. Such is the opinion that three organized towns created the Commonwealth. The records prior to 1639 that have disappeared, were those of three plantations, which were constituted as such and bore the names of the three Massachusetts towns from which their inhabitants emigrated. We have, fortunately, the early records of Springfield, at first united with them, to disclose the nature of their government. Hartford, alone, has documentary evidence of any town organization before the Commonwealth was formally established. CHAPTER III. 1648-1800. The growth of the town of Hartford was, from the first, steady and sure. It received important accessions to the number of its inhabitants, families of education and means; and the work of building houses--new homes for souls at last free to order their lives as they would, --of clearing lands, making roads and bridges, went rapidly on. They broke up the fat soil of the meadows for their crops, and built mills with which to prepare lumber for their buildings, and to grind their grain for food. Amidst all their toil they had to be constantly watchful against the wily and treacherous Indians; and the momentous questions involved in the establishment of a new church and a new state had to be discussed and acted upon. It is not surprising that idleness and vagabondage were not encouraged at that time. With the increase of population came a demand for more territory, and houses were soon built upon this side the Cheat River. It is impossible to ascertain the names of all the early settlers upon this side, or the exact date of their building here. In May, 1653, the inhabitants were exempted from training with the west side towns, and ordered to meet on the east side, as Will: Hill shall appoint, and train there together, and so continue. This indicates a permanent population here at that time. Prom among the names upon the monument erected to the first settlers of Hartford in the old Center Burying Ground in that city, we take the following of those who either settled on this side the Great River, or who were associated with the early history of our territory: John Crow was one of the first settlers and one of the original proprietors of our soil. He was a large land-owner and lived near the..
