Book excerpt: John Tarlinton (1765-1842) was born in Tutbury, Staffordshire, England to a Robert and mary Tarlington. In 1787 he was convicted of grand larceny, breaking and entering and was sentenced to seven years in the penal colony in New South Wales. In 1791 he arrived in Sydney Cove and was granted land at Prospect. In 1796 he married Catherine Jackson and they were the parents of a daughter. Catherine died in 1811 and John married Margaret Duggan. He adopted Margaret's son, William Duggan, illegitimate son of William Ruffain, and gave him the surname of Tarlinton. John owned land in Prospect and Mittagong which William eventually inherited after John's death in 1842. In 1829 William set up his own station in Cobargo and married Mary Saunders. They were the parents of ten children. William died in 1893 leaving behind a large posterity.
