Book excerpt: From the internationally bestselling author of The Simple Wild comes the story of a woman at a crossroads in her life, struggling between the safe route and the one that will only lead to more heartbreak. Veterinarian Marie Lehr knows unrequited love all too well after pining for her best friend, only to watch him marry another woman. It’s a mistake she will never make again, especially not when she can practically hear the clock ticking on her childbearing years. The trouble is, she can’t seem to find anyone who appeals to her even a fraction as much as that burly bush pilot did. Competitive musher Tyler Brady certainly doesn’t, especially not after the heated altercation with the handsome but arrogant, spiteful man. Or so she thinks. While volunteering at the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, Marie discovers that first impressions may have been false, and her attraction to Tyler is very real. But his heart belongs to someone else, leaving him with nothing to offer but friendship. Marie’s been down this road before and knows how that ends. Yet, no matter how hard she works to keep from falling for Tyler, it seems she’s doomed to follow her own trail once again.

Book Using Literature to Help Troubled Teenagers Cope with Identity Issues

Download or read book Using Literature to Help Troubled Teenagers Cope with Identity Issues written by Jeffrey S. Kaplan Ed. and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1999-11-30 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The search for one's identity is an ancient quest reflected throughout history in stories where human glory and conquest are often layered with great pain and self doubt, meant to help people discover themselves and who they are. Today, this quest is found prevalently in young adult novels, where characters wrestle with modern dilemmas in order to find themselves. This reference resource provides a link for teachers, media specialists, parents, and other adults to those novels and how to use them effectively. Educators and therapists explore the literature where common identity issues are addressed in ways intriguing to teens. Using fictional characters, these experts provide guidance on how to encourage adolescents to cope while improving their reading and writing skills. Twelve novels are examined from both a literary and psychological perspective, allowing the readers to meet the central figures as if they were living human beings. Each chapter is written by a literature specialist who has teamed up with a therapist and confronts a different identity issue, examining such dilemmas as body image, the father/son relationship, bigotry, and peer relations. This pair of experts tries to define the central character's struggle in each novel to discover who they are and to become self-actualized individuals. Each chapter also provides an annotated bibliography of other works, both fiction and nonfiction, that explore these same issues to give readers not only the insight into helping teenagers with similar problems, but also the tools with which to get teenagers reading and addressing these problems. This innovative approach is meant to provide the opportunity for adults and adolescents to better understand each other.

Book Flying from My Mind

Download or read book Flying from My Mind written by David G. Cook and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2008-03-27 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The memoirs of a hang glider pilot and pioneer and his first-hand account of designing the revolutionary Shadow microlight aircraft. This fascinating story begins in 1973 when David Cook built a glider in an attempt to win the Selsey Birdman Rally—an annual event where all types of creations are launched from the end of Bognor Pier. Between 1975 and 1977 he won every National and International hang gliding competition entered, and then in 1977 he designed and built a power unit for his glider. In 1978 it became the first and lowest-powered microlight to cross the English Channel. Cook’s successes in this venture led to sponsorship from Duckhams Oils and there followed a period of demonstration flights at major air shows. In 1982 he designed a microlight called Shadow and in 1983 it took the FAI world speed and distance records for the class. In 1992 he took the aircraft to 23,600 ft to claim the world altitude record for the class, beaten later by himself in a newly designed Streak to 27,150 ft. David started a company to build the Shadow in 1984 and has demonstrated its remarkable flying abilities around the world, during which time he had many amusing and some exciting experiences. In 1987 the Shadow won the British Design Award.

Book excerpt: What do you do when your best friend is on the line- the business end of your fishing line? Finding his murdered best friend’s body drags a soon-to-be-retiring financial executive into the ruthless world of con artists and scammers that prowl idyllic Nantucket Island for unsuspecting marks. Chief Financial Officer Harry Bartlett hasn’t made plans for his impending retirement, but he’s happy for now vacationing on Nantucket Island at the compound of his best and only friend, Ian Bradford, a wealthy wine merchant. But that abruptly changes when he fishes Ian’s body from a Nantucket Island pond full of snapping turtles. Harry volunteers to break the news to Ginny, Ian’s widow, and is dumbfounded when she tells him that she has $20 in her wallet, a maxed-out credit card, and no knowledge of their financial affairs. Harry pays Ginny’s bills while he digs into Ian’s books with his unique financial insights. But the more he digs, the more he discovers Ian’s financial trickery and illegal wine businesses. Teaming up with his new girlfriend, Yvette Truque, a snarky local reporter, Steve Malarkey, and his ex-Mob enforcer relative, Uncle Louie, Harry must wade through a web of lies, deceptions and attacks- tossed overboard from the local ferry, a hit-and-run while bicycling, and attacked by ‘gator attack in Florida - to recover Ian’s money in time to keep Ginny and her two kid from being evicted from their home. Debut author Robert Ainsworth has created an eccentric cast of characters with tongue-in-cheek humor. CONNED is an intricate story with just enough financial detail to bring the reader into the story and feel-like-you-are-there descriptions of Nantucket. Harry Bartlett is no flat protagonist, but instead tackles the passions, loneliness, and compulsions that we all face. CONNED is a fast-paced, complex story that keeps your attention to the unexpected end.
