Book Harry Alan Towers

Download or read book Harry Alan Towers written by Dave Mann and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-11-03 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry Alan Towers' reputation rests upon a corpus of 95 low-budget productions shot post-haste in every corner of the globe. He took an integral part, however, in the development of the protocols that now underpin much transnational film production and he must be regarded as a pioneer. Towers' slash and burn strategy focused on parasitic, back-to-back productions, funded by rights bundles that were pre-sold globally. This strategy was substantially derived from his early days in broadcasting wherein he acted as a go-between in the American and the British Commonwealth markets. Though he became adept at procuring funds from pariah regimes and black market economies, primarily he continued to act as a broker bringing together American equity investment and European finance under the auspices of EC co-production agreements. He was also quick to exploit the burgeoning niche markets becoming available in the wake of technological developments and government initiatives.

Book Mr Towers of London

Download or read book Mr Towers of London written by Harry Alan Towers and published by . This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, in his own words, are the illustrious adventures of HARRY ALAN TOWERS, rascal and raconteur, a notorious figure in the world of cinema of whom it was said he could go into any production office in the world and walk out with a movie deal. After establishing himself in 1940s radio with The Lives of Harry Lime and The Black Museum, both starring Orson Welles, Towers produced more than 100 feature films all around the world. He worked in 40 countries from Austria to Zimbabwe, starring the likes of Michael Caine, Christopher Lee, Jack Palance, Klaus Kinski and many more. A lifelong lover of literature, he brought to the screen the works of authors as revered as H. G. Wells, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie-and as reviled as the Marquis De Sade and Leopold Von Sacher-Masoch. And as a lifelong lover of women, he made friends and stars, national news and international scandals. "Harry Alan Towers is one of the great unsung producers of post-1960 cinema. Every film he produced carries his distinct personality, as with Selznick or Bronston, but Harry's metier was exploitation. What he uniquely brought to his films was the sense of a connoisseur, and a sense of someone who loved pulp; he appreciated the finer things and smuggled them into some wonderful movies... and some unlikely ones, too. I'm delighted to learn he wrote his memoirs, and I can't wait to read them!" - TIM LUCAS, editor of VIDEO WATCHDOG

Book It Came from the 80s

Download or read book It Came from the 80s written by Francesco Borseti and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-08-26 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From their heyday in the 1950s and 1960s, B movies declined in popularity through the 1970s. As the big Hollywood studios began to make genre films with sky-high budgets, independent producers of low-budget movies could not compete in theaters. The sale of American International Pictures in 1979 and New World Pictures in 1983 marked the end of an era. The emergence of home video in the 1980s marked the beginning of a new phase, as dozens of B movies were produced each year for the small screen, many becoming cult classics of science fiction, horror and fantasy. Through numerous interviews with producers, directors, photographers and actors, this book sheds light on an overlooked corner of film history with behind-the-scenes stories of 28 low-budget favorites from the 1980s.

Book Motion Picture Copyrights Renewals 1950 1959

Download or read book Motion Picture Copyrights Renewals 1950 1959 written by David Pierce and published by McFarland. This book was released on 1989 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This annotated reference provides information on the copyright status of over 20,000 features, short films, television programs, and documentaries. The United States copyright system allows a film to fall into the public domain if a renewal is not filed in the twenty-eighth year after its release. Such public domain films may be used by anyone for free, but finding out which films are or are not still under copyright can be expensive and tedious. This guide alleviates that expense and drudgery by including all motion pictures registered for copyright in the 1950s, as well as 500 that were received after 1959. The book also includes an overview of the copyright system and sample certificates. All renewals of copyrights are noted, allowing readers to clearly see which items are or are not in the public domain.
