Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harrison and Proctor: The River Raisin Every available vessel and boat was pressed into service for the transportation of the prisoners taken at Detroit; but with every ch'ort, several weeks elapsedbefore the last of them were sent away. The regular troops were taken to F ort Erie on their way to Quebec and the Ohio volunteers and drafted militia were paroled and landed at Cleve land. He detachment of the 41st Regiment which had been drawn from the Niagara frontier was sent back without delay to meet the im pending attack ia that quarter and the militia volunteers from the counties of Lincoln, Norfolk and York returned to their homes, after doing duty as an escort to the prisoners on their way down the lake. Three hundred of the local militia were retained in service, part of whom were employed in the expedition to the River Raisin and Miami Rapids already described, while the remainder were engaged in disarming the Michigan militia, dismantling the batteries at Detroit ard removing the guns and military stores to Amherstburg. The ekecutive powers of civil governor of Michigan Territory were assumed by Colonel Procter, who appointed as Secretary for the time being, -lagnetas B. Woodward. All the artillery and military stores of the British army fell into the hands of the American troops. Among the former were three beautiful brass field pieces, which had been taken during the revolutionary war, and which were recovered by the English at the dastardly surrender of General Hull. During the pursuit of Proctor all Harrison's baggage was carried in a valise, and his bed was a single blanket fastened over his saddle. This last he gave to Colonel Evans, a wounded British officer. On the night after the battle of the Thames, he invited thirty-five British officers (prisoners of war, ) to sup with, and all he had to place before them was fresh roast beef, without either bread or salt. This was the fare of the army, and he would never have better food than his soldiers. On the return of the troops, the Kentucky volunteers were dismissed at Detroit, and the British Indians sent to General Harrison, to ask for peace. An armistice was granted, that the general government might have time to consider the terms. On the 22d of October, General Harrison and suite, and Commodore Ferry, arrived at Erie, in the Ariel, from Detroit. They were received by the inhabitants with rapture-- with the thunder of cannon, illuminations, and every demonstration of joy as the deliverers of the frontier. Perry went to Newport, Rhode Island.
