Download or read book Right Makes Might written by Wolfgang Mieder and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1860 Abraham Lincoln employed the proverb, Right makes might, (opposite of the more aggressive Might makes right) in his famed Cooper Union address. While Lincoln did not originate the proverb, his use of it in this critical speech indicates that the 14th century phrase had taken on new ethical and democratic connotations in the 19th century. In this collection, famed scholar of proverbs Wolfgang Mieder explores the multifaceted use and function of proverbs through the history of the United States, from their early beginnings up through their use by today's well-known politicians, including Barack Obama, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Bernie Sanders. Building on previous publications and unpublished research, Mieder explores sociopolitical aspects of the American worldview as expressed through the use of proverbs in politics, women's rights, and the civil rights movement. By looking at the use of proverbial phrases, Mieder demonstrates how one traditional phrase can take on numerous expressive roles over time and how they continue to play a key role in our contemporary moment.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some people would gnash their teeth at the idea that America was – and can be again – a Christian nation. They will not be satisfied until they have removed every vestige of our Christian heritage from our minds and from our surroundings. Yet in this book, D. James Kennedy and Jerry Newcombe document the incontrovertible fact that America began as a Christian nation. And "we can get back on track before it's too late," they say. "What made us great in the first place is our rich Christian heritage. It's time to reclaim America!"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our language is full of hundreds of quotations that are often cited but seldom confirmed. Ralph Keyes's The Quote Verifier considers not only classic misquotes such as "Nice guys finish last," and "Play it again, Sam," but more surprising ones such as "Ain't I a woman?" and "Golf is a good walk spoiled," as well as the origins of popular sayings such as "The opera ain't over till the fat lady sings," "No one washes a rented car," and "Make my day." Keyes's in-depth research routinely confounds widespread assumptions about who said what, where, and when. Organized in easy-to-access dictionary form, The Quote Verifier also contains special sections highlighting commonly misquoted people and genres, such as Yogi Berra and Oscar Wilde, famous last words, and misremembered movie lines. An invaluable resource for not just those with a professional need to quote accurately, but anyone at all who is interested in the roots of words and phrases, The Quote Verifier is not only a fascinating piece of literary sleuthing, but also a great read.

Download or read book United States of America Government Religion Christianity Law Illegalities God 1St Priority His Rightness Provided Rights Holy Bible Not Self Idol Selfishness written by Anthony Sheffield and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every concerned citizen will enjoy and be very encouraged by the good and accurate historical records of the United States of America. Lies have infiltrated so vastly and so deeply into the society that even the educational institutions have become deceived and warped, so that the students are then receiving passed-down versions that are, as said, lies. Some folk are deceived innocently, some willingly; some know it and want it. Many folk are so busy with all the cares of life that they passively accept it. A false peace has set in, and yet it is not peace as we are so alertly observing. Values of the heart need care, as to whether they are right values, and those values are then displayed by posts of the government. Every citizen needs to know what the true historical experience and record is, what governmental structure was established in the USA, what it is all about, and how it really is and operates. Because we are all interested in the spiritual activity of life, then we will be so inspired therein. This is a very different and correct account of the real USA Government, its history, and its establishment.

Download or read book A Gay Epiphany written by Robert K. Pavlick and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2010-12-22 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A Gay Epiphany” is basically my autobiography, the autobiography of a “man of no importance”, but it is really much more than that. It covers a 55 year journey beginning with an innocent young child’s search for God, complicated by the conflicting dogmas and interpretations of institutional Christianity and coupled with growing up gay in the 1950’s and 60’s. The book covers the struggles of a young man who wants only to serve God, but who meets with nothing but religious hostility and condemnation from institutional Christianity due to his homosexuality. It addresses many areas of study including comparative religion, Eastern philosophy, New Age, The Christian Right, politics, The American Dream, fundamentalism, misinterpretation of religious texts, authenticity of the Bible itself and many other related topics quoting from specialists in those fields of study. It is an appeal to religious leaders, parents, educators and legislators to show more compassion towards gay men and women and grant them the full respect and equality to which they are entitled under a secular democracy. It is my gift to my gay brothers and sisters who may still be struggling with how to integrate their sexual identity with their spirituality. It is also intended as my gift to those in the heterosexual community who still may be struggling with which spiritual path, out of the hundreds that exist, would be most advantageous to their spiritual growth. One can either choose a path which believes that “the glass is half empty” or a path which believes that the “glass is half full.”
