Book excerpt: When opportunists with criminal purposes worm their way into the power structure of a large school system, compromise law enforcement, and gain access to all that tax money, "education" takes on a whole new meaning. As events escalate, ugly acts of violence, disguised as accidents, are inflicted upon those who "get in the way." When Ben Kelly, a man on shaky emotional underpinnings, raises questions, he finds himself a target by people who will stop at nothing to carry out their felonious schemes. His unique path through hard circumstances down a perilous road of action provides the drive for what happens to him and those around him. In The Annunaki Woman, Rena, station chief of an interstellar craft, carries out her orders to attempt capture of a human with unusual DNA components. All hell breaks loose. She is stunned when her subject, Ben Kelly, and two companions react with deadly force and annihilate her team. More deadly events transpire and Rena is forced into tough decisions which throw her into conflict with her own people. Her problems are complicated by manifestations of Earth's development of The Singularity, the intrusion of ancient races, and entities guarding old secrets emerging to engage her. Rena and Kelly are thrown together to survive. The action roars out of New Orleans into Arkansas and to other places farther north and then on to other very different places very far away.

Book Fairy Tale Review

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kate Bernheimer
  • Publisher : Wayne State University Press
  • Release : 2015-06-08
  • ISBN : 0814341756
  • Pages : 188 pages

Download or read book Fairy Tale Review written by Kate Bernheimer and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2015-06-08 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like all fairy tales, the story of Little Red gets strength from its multitudes. It is a moving hive, a travelling pack of translations and interpretations too numerous to catalogue. It manages to examine our most salient tropes in binaries, and the equators formed in this contrast are tangential contradictions: The tale is at once innocent and sexual. It mingles the vulnerable with the predatory, and overlaps captivity with freedom. It is both fable and fairy tale, and a horror story to boot: a naïve individual walking into a den of trickery. Then comes that eerie, parsed-out realization when our girl comes to terms with what the readers have known all along: things are not as they seem. What a fright, when something categorized as safe becomes compromised and inverted, when the familiar is replaced with the unknown. In this issue, we add new footprints to the path through the woods. Some of these pieces retell the tale; others explore its place in our minds and our culture.

Book The Ghost of the Mistreated Canines Life after Margaret

Download or read book The Ghost of the Mistreated Canines Life after Margaret written by Tom Marovich and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2016-06-07 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It seemed like every able body from within a hundred-mile radius showed up for Margaret’s funeral. Neither the funeral home nor the reception hall was large enough to hold the group all at one time. Even with the loss of her partner and best friend, Star managed to keep the clinic and turned away no animal in need. She knew that’s how Margaret would have wanted it. Although Kate’s decision to become a veterinarian was a struggle, she did attend college and did her best to follow in her mother’s footstep. Eventually, she became a full partner in the clinic. With the agreement with the staff, the name of the clinic was changed. The sleigh that Michael built was eventually brought out again, and for one special reason, Michael felt a warm and tender caring touch from Star. Michael survived a severe heart attack. While he was in the hospital, without realizing what she had agreed to and not knowing that Michael realized what he was saying, Star agreed to take a trip with Michael to the Rocky Mountains in Wyoming. One evening while at the kitchen table, Harold and Kate sat in discussion and wondered if Michael and Star would return as a married couple.

  • Pages : 214 pages

Download or read book When Vultures Dance written by Goodwin Michael Goodwin and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-12 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Vultures Dance follows Seth Farragut, a young hedge fund manager, as his drive to take over a bankrupt auto supplier leads to an indictment for insider trading. A "vulture" investor who excels at highstakes trading of distressed companies' securities, he makes decisions that all too easily cost others their jobs and create plenty of enemies. Under the influence of tough, attractive Lauren Hayward, he bets everything on the survival of a small Chicago manufacturing company that could, if he can rescue it, be his career-making score. But his quest spawns an attempted murder, suicide, and the prospect of years in prison. Seth is more than a Type-A, fast trading up-and-comer. He is a loner who increasingly questions what he does for a living after seeing first-hand the consequences of his actions. He finally meets someone who opens him up to love and a life beyond trading and money. Meanwhile, in the background, Wall Street is in turmoil as the economy tumbles. When Vultures Dance explores themes that are all over today's news: the growing divide between the haves and have-nots, the rule of capitalists over the shrinking blue collar work force, and the stupendous wealth accumulation by a very few. Goodwin's eye for detail brings the headlines to life.
