Book Rape Revenge Films

Download or read book Rape Revenge Films written by Alexandra Heller-Nicholas and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-03-29 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often considered the lowest depth to which cinema can plummet, the rape-revenge film is broadly dismissed as fundamentally exploitative and sensational, catering only to a demented, regressive demographic. This second edition, ten years after the first, continues the assessment of these films and the discourse they provoke. Included is a new chapter about women-directed rape-revenge films, a phenomenon that--revitalized since #MeToo exploded in late 2017--is a filmmaking tradition with a history that transcends a contemporary context. Featuring both famous and unknown movies, controversial and widely celebrated filmmakers, as well as rape-revenge cinema from around the world, this revised edition demonstrates that diverse and often contradictory treatments of sexual violence exist simultaneously.

Book Living a Life that Matters

Download or read book Living a Life that Matters written by Harold S Kushner and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2011-07-06 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this inspiring, uplifting and timely book, Harold Kushner addresses our craving for significance, the need to know that our lives and choices mean something. We sometimes confuse power, wealth and fame with true achievement. We can do great things, and occasionally terrible things, to reassure ourselves that we matter to the world. We need to think of ourselves as good people and are troubled when we compromise our integrity to be successful and important. In Living a Life That Matters, Rabbi Kushner suggests that the path to a truly successful and significant life lies in friendship, family, acts of generosity and self-sacrifice, as well as in God's forgiving nature. He describes how, in changing the life of even one person in a positive way, we make a difference in the world, give our lives meaning, and prove that we do, in fact, matter.

Book The Testament of Harold s Wife

Download or read book The Testament of Harold s Wife written by Lynne Hugo and published by Kensington Books. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A glorious—and unique—tale of tragedy, resilience, and one kick-ass grieving widow and grandmother. I laughed, cried, and cheered.” —Barbara Claypole White, bestselling author of The Perfect Son This ebook contains a bonus essay from the author about the inspiration for the book! After losing her husband, Harold, and her beloved grandson, Cody, within the past year, Louisa has two choices. She can fade away on her Indiana family farm, where her companionship comes courtesy of her aging chickens and an argumentative cat. Or, she can concoct A Plan. Louisa, a retired schoolteacher who’s as smart, sassy, and irreverent as ever, isn’t the fading away type. The drunk driver who killed Cody got off scot-free by lying about a deer on the road. Harold had tried to take matters into his own hands, but was thwarted by Gus, the local sheriff. Now Louisa decides to take up Harold’s cause, though it will mean outsmarting Gus, who’s developed an unwelcome crush on her, and staying ahead of her adult son who’s found solace in a money-draining cult and terrible art. Louisa’s love of life is rekindled as the spring sun warms her cornfields and she goes into action. But even the most Perfect Plans can go awry. A wounded buck and a teenage boy on the land she treasures help Louisa see that the enduring beauty of the natural world and the mystery of human connection are larger than revenge . . . and so is justice. “Part romp, part suspense, but above all, a love story. I adored this fun yet poignant book.” —Diane Chamberlain, New York Times bestselling author

Book Anger Aggression and Interventions for Interpersonal Violence

Download or read book Anger Aggression and Interventions for Interpersonal Violence written by Timothy A. Cavell and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-05-31 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interpersonal violence has many faces and many names - domestic violence, child abuse, school bullying. Anger, Aggression, and Interventions for Interpersonal Violence reveals what clinical scientists know and what mental health practitioners can do about interpersonal violence. To advance the way professionals conceptualize interventions for violent clients, contributors consider the complex relation between anger and aggression and discuss how that relation affects treating various forms of interpersonal violence. Should treatment focus on anger, on aggression, or on both? Does that decision depend on the form of interpersonal violence, or does the anger-aggression relation suggest a core set of intervention principles and strategies? Readers are provided up-to-date, detailed discussions as well as focused commentaries, all written by internationally known researchers. This volume will serve as a comprehensive guide for researchers and practitioners alike.

Book The Skeleton Cupboard

Download or read book The Skeleton Cupboard written by Tanya Byron and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2015-04-07 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gripping, unforgettable, and deeply affecting story of a young clinical psychologist learning how she can best help her patients, The Skeleton Cupboard is a riveting and revealing memoir that offers fascinating insight into the human mind. In The Skeleton Cupboard, Professor Tanya Byron recounts the stories of the patients who most influenced her career as a mental health practitioner. Spanning her years of training—years in which Byron was forced her to contend with the harsh realities of the lives of her patients and confront a dark moment in her own family's past—The Skeleton Cupboard is a compelling and compassionate account of how much health practitioners can learn from those they treat. Among others, we meet Ray, a violent sociopath desperate to be shown tenderness and compassion; Mollie, a talented teenager intent on starving herself; and Imogen, a twelve-year old so haunted by a secret that she's intent on killing herself. Byron brings the reader along as she uncovers the reasons each of these individuals behave the way they do, resulting in a thrilling, compulsively readable psychological mystery that sheds light on mental illness and what its treatment tells us about ourselves.

Book Maynard s Revenge

Download or read book Maynard s Revenge written by Lance Taylor and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now widely agreed that mainstream macroeconomics is irrelevant and that there is need for a more useful and realistic economic analysis that can provide a better understanding of the ongoing global financial and economic crisis. Lance Taylor’s book exposes the unrealistic assumptions of the rational expectations and real business cycle approaches and of mainstream finance theory. It argues that in separating monetary and financial behavior from real behavior, they do not address the ways that consumption, accumulation, and the government play in the workings of the economy. Taylor argues that the ideas of J. M. Keynes and others provide a more useful framework both for understanding the crisis and for dealing with it effectively. Keynes’s basic points were fundamental uncertainty and the absence of Say’s Law. He set up machinery to analyze the macro economy under such circumstances, including the principle of effective demand, liquidity preference, different rules for determining commodity and asset prices, distinct behavioral patterns of different collective actors, and the importance of thinking in terms of complete macro accounting schemes. Economists working in this tradition also worked out growth and cycle models. Employing these ideas throughout Maynard’s Revenge, Taylor provides an analytical narrative about the causes of the crisis, and suggestions for dealing with it.
