Book excerpt: The President of Western Dakota School of Mines (WDSM) in Rapid City is shot and killed while viewing a "shootout" staged for tourists. How the shooter had live ammunition remains a mystery for some time. The unpopular, power hungry, and ambitious Vice President Dick Rafferty of WDSM assumes the Presidency and initiates controversial changes at the school. The narrator Jim Harrison as well as Bill Harney his friend are physics professors at WDSM. Harney is a very well regarded scientist and he is suspicious of the circumstances. Harrison and Harney investigate the events as best they can aided by Betty Turner a news reporter for the local Rapid City paper. She enlists the aid of Gerald Thompson a national reporter for the New York Journal. Thompson, in effect, breaks the story wide open. Motives as well as connections of Rafferty to the shooter Buzz Franklin are discovered. Rafferty is implicated in the shooting by Franklin and is put on paid administrative leave of absence while Harney is appointed acting President. Included in the motives is the closure of the nearby Homestake Gold Mine and plans to convert it to an underground science laboratory with subsequent valuation of property in the neighborhood. Franklin is indicted for the shooting but before the story reaches a dramatic climax in the trial of Franklin, conflict arises between Rafferty and the faculty, particularly Harney and Harrison, as to the objectives of the school. When Franklin is convicted, he immediately non lethally shoots Rafferty (who was not idicted) and others with a smuggled gun. After Rafferty recovers he resigns his (on leave) Presidency and goes into real estate. Harney proves his mettle by insisting on returning to his position as professor while the mine is converted to a laboratory and WDSM ends up increasing its stature by connections with new lab.

Book excerpt: Upon Harney Peak, a great Native American vision was received, a famous General nearly took the summit by horseback, Wasicu Waken was laid to rest, an enormous rock monument was contemplated and a stone fire tower capped the peak. Known to the Lakota as Hinhan Kaga Paha, Harney Peak is the highest point in the Black Hills of western South Dakota. At 7,242 feet, Harney Peak is a natural, historical and cultural gem. Often overshadowed and scattered among the pages of history, Harney Peak Revealed captures the morsels and molds a unique perspective of the summit. Through each event the granite peak gradually discloses its character and garners an appreciation of the sacred summit. Upon Harney Peak, a newspaper was once published, a Boy Scout band performed, a post office operated, an airway beacon provided a guiding light for airplanes flying at night and burro rides were offered. The high point claim has drawn people to Harney Peak, and the lure is as varied as each individual seeking to place their feet upon the summit. A single granite peak that has logged a diverse history, casts its shadow upon those who traverse the mountains that rise from the plains. The various snippets expose glimpses of the high point. Collectively, Harney Peak is revealed. The array of events that unfolded upon Harney Peak is as extensive as the panoramic view from the pinnacle. Harney Peak Revealed is a fascinating read that will kindle a new appreciation for the natural, historical and cultural gem in the Black Hills.

Book Black Hills National Forest

Download or read book Black Hills National Forest written by Jan Cerney and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once vital to fire prevention and detection, most of the Black Hills National Forest historic lookout towers now serve primarily as hiking destinations. The first crude lookout structures were built at Custer Peak and Harney Peak in 1911. Since that time, more than 20 towers have been constructed in the area. The first lookout towers were built of wood, most replaced by steel or stone. The Civilian Conservation Corps was instrumental in constructing fire towers during the 1930s and 1940s. One of the most famous and architecturally and aesthetically valued towers is the Harney Peak Fire Lookout--situated on the highest point east of the Rocky Mountains. Harney Peak is among a number of Black Hills towers listed on the National Historic Lookout Register. Over 200 vintage images tell the story of not only the historic fire towers but those who manned them. Perched atop high peaks in remote locations, fire lookout personnel spent countless hours scanning the forest, pinpointing dangers, often experiencing the powerful wrath of lightning strong enough to jolt them off their lightning stools.

Download or read book State Work written by Stefano Harney and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2002-07-02 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An innovative contribution to political theory, State Work examines the labor of government workers in North America. Arguing that this work needs to be theorized precisely because it is vital to the creation and persistence of the state, Stefano Harney draws on thinking from public administration and organizational sociology, as well as poststructuralist theory and performance studies, to launch a cultural studies of the state. Countering conceptions of the government and its employees as remote and inflexible, Harney uses the theory of mass intellectuality developed by Italian worker-theorists to illuminate the potential for genuine political progress inherent within state work. State Work begins with an ethnographic account of Harney’s work as a midlevel manager within an Ontario government initiative charged with leading the province’s efforts to combat racism. Through readings of material such as The X-Files and Law & Order, Harney then reviews how popular images of the state and government labor are formed within American culture and how these ideas shape everyday life. He highlights the mutually dependent roles played in state work by the citizenry and civil servants. Using as case studies Al Gore’s National Partnership for Reinventing Government and a community-policing project in New York City, Harney also critiques public management literature and performance measurement theories. He concludes his study with a look at the motivations of state workers.

Book excerpt: Building on the ideas Harney and Moten developed in The Undercommons, All Incomplete extends the critical investigation of logistics, individuation and sovereignty. It reflects their chances to travel, listen and deepen their commitment to and claim upon partiality. All Incomplete studies the history of a preference for the force and ground and underground of social existence. Engaging a vibrant constellation of thought that includes the work of Amilcar Cabral, Erica Edwards, Denise Ferreira da Silva, Cedric Robinson, Walter Rodney, Hortense Spillers and many others, Harney and Moten seek to share and understand that preference. In so doing, Moten and Harney hope to have forged what Manolo Callahan, echoing Ivan Illich, calls a convivial tool that - despite the temptation to improve and demand, develop and govern, separate and grasp - helps us renew our habits of assembly. All Incomplete features the work of award winning photographer Zun Lee, exploring and celebrating the everyday spaces of Black sociality, intimacy, belonging, and insurgency, and a preface by Denise Ferreira da Silva.

Download or read book Black Elk Peak written by Bradley Saum and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-22 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of Black Elk Peak--previously known as Hinhan Kaga and, more recently, as Harney Peak--remained segmented and scattered throughout the shadows of antiquity, until now. The natural landmark's namesake, Black Elk, experienced his great vision here, solidifying his status as a Sioux holy man. Obstructed by the insurmountable granite, General Custer and his horse nearly summited during the 1874 expedition. On that granite, sculptor Gutzon Borglum made the decision to carve a grand monument into the face of nearby Mount Rushmore. Prior to serving as the first Pine Ridge Reservation Indian agent and then mayor of Rapid City, Valentine McGillycuddy documented his ascent to the peak in 1875, where his ashes would come to rest. Author Bradley Saum chronicles the unique and untold stories that are intrinsically linked to the highest point in the Black Hills.

Book excerpt: If a person has extra time, nothing to do, and finds themself looking for ways to fill their empty days...this book is definitely not for them. No Is a Beautiful Word is designed and crafted for people whose plate is full, whose margin is thin, and whose life feels overloaded. They are looking for help, relief, and wisdom to navigate the countless options that life offers on a daily basis. This book is needed by people who: Go to bed with a "To Do" list that never seems to get totally done. Kindly say, "Yes" and secretly regret it five minutes later. Feel pain and live with guilt when they have to say, "No." Were taught that "No" is a dirty word. Believe that saying "No" is a sign of weakness. Feel trapped by unwise past commitments. Want to say "Yes" to what matters most in life but are too exhausted. Know that their life is out of balance and are seeking to fix it! It will be valuable for: Leaders who have a tough time making the hard decisions because they fear hurting someone's feelings. Executives who feel over extended and pressed to the edges of their capacity. Parents who feel overworked and under appreciated. Students who are trying to balance the intensity of school, work, and their relational world. Retired people who find themselves saying, with subtle humor but aching regret, "I am more busy now than I have ever been!" Single people who go to bed at night exhausted because the day left no margin and offered no oasis of peace. Married people who love their life but secretly dream about time to play, space to relax, and taking a nap. No Is a Beautiful Word is designed to be read briskly, chewed on thoroughly, and acted on practically. The chapters are brief by intention. They range from one paragraph (that's right, some chapters are only a few sentences long!) to four pages. The goal of this book is give people clear concepts, paint a picture of what it looks like to live out the idea, and then move on to the next thought. The vision is to help people learn to say "No" to the things that don't matter (or don't matter as much) so they can say "Yes" to the things that bring life, hope, peace, and lasting meaning.
