Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Student's Harmony As implied by its title, the book is essentially designed for students; but, while primarily intended to ensure success in examination work, it claims to be equally adapted to give the student a knowledge of chord construction and progression sufficient to enable him to analyze the harmonic structure of the classics, and to solve the problems contained in some of the finer progressions of the great masters. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harmony Harmony is the grammar of tone language. The knowledge of Harmony is just as indispensable to anyone studying music, as the knowledge of grammar is to those who wish to gain more than a superficial understanding of a language. Since the exercises in Harmony (from very simple pedagogical grounds) not only can be resolved into their elements, but, for the most part, must be a combination of separate elements, the student can easily see in them the preparation for composing; they are such indeed in no other sense than are the orthographical and grammatical exercises preparatory to writing poetry - not less elementary, not less indispensable. All chords may be divided into two groups: - 1. Triad, or chord with three tones. 2. Sept chord, or chord with four tones. Every triad consists of a fundamental tone, its third and its fifth. Every tone of the scale may be used as the fundamental of such a triad, thus a triad can be formed on any tone of the scale by adding its third and its fifth. If one uses only the tones which belong to a certain scale he will find that part of the triads have a major third and a perfect fifth, while others have a minor third and a perfect fifth. The triad on the VII degree of any scale, as well as on the II degree of the minor scale, always has a minor third and a diminished fifth. The difference between these triads does not concern us at present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Text Book of Harmony Classic Reprint

Download or read book Text Book of Harmony Classic Reprint written by Geo Oakey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-27 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text Book of Harmony AT the outset, it should be stated that a general knowledge of the rudiments of music is presupposed. For this reason the construction Of scales, which is often given in books Of harmony, is here omitted, as the author contends that that subject belongs to the rudiments, as does also the subject of intervals. As, however, a theoretical knowledge of intervals does not enter into all systems Of teaching the elements of music, and an exact knowledge Of intervals is a prerequisite to the study of harmony, a preliminary chapter on them is included for those who may need it. Those who are not thoroughly familiar with intervals should write them out in different keys. All the early examples should also be transposed to different keys till the student gains the power of readily recognising the chords and their progressions in all their varied appearances and disguises. Book A Manual of Harmony Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Harmony Classic Reprint written by Salomon Jadassohn and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Harmony Yielding to oft-repeated and urgent requests for the publication of the method according to which I have for years given instruction in the Theory of Music, I have decided to publish the fruits of my private study and experience in teaching, in the form of three instruction-books. The first of these will be entitled "A Manual of Harmony," to be followed as soon as possible by a second on "Single and Double Counterpoint," and a third on "Canon and Fugue." An attempt to give an idea of the new features which I have introduced, both as regards the elucidation of the chords and their combinations, and the plan of instruction, would take too long; the matter is fully set forth in the following pages. But I will not neglect to call attention to the additional examples given in the Appendix, which are worked out conformably to rules found in the corresponding chapters. I have learned from practical experience in teaching that it does not suffice, in many cases, to show the pupil how the rules are applied in isolated instances, i.e. out of all connection with some piece of music, however small, which forms an organic whole. Almost any pupil can learn a rule more easily i and thoroughly when its application is clearly illustrated in the compact form of one or more little pieces of music. The manifold and peculiar difficulties besetting instruction in musical theory render this method almost indispensable. We derive what we call our rules from the works of the classic masters; but at the same time we find so great a number of exceptions to the rules, that the latter often seem doubtful to the pupil. Take one instance: The pupil learns at first that the seventh in a chord of the seventh must resolve by a step downward. Presently he discovers that in very many cases it may also progress upward by a step, or be held, or enharmonically changed, or even led down by a skip to tones belonging to other chords. Thus nothing is left him of the rule first laid down but the principle that the seventh is to be led downward by a step, when the following chord and the correct leading of the parts permit of so doing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harmony: Its Theory and Practice; Additional Exercises No satisfactory reason can possibly be given why harmony exercises should necessarily be (as they certainly are in most books) a mere series of dry chords, mostly in notes of uniform length. An attempt has, therefore, been made in the present work to do for harmony what the late Stephen Heller did so admirably for pianoforte studies - to invest them with musical int'erest, thus cultivating the student's feeling for melody and rhythm, while at the same time giving him an insight into the harmonic relations of the various chords employed. For this purpose, all the exercises, excepting a few of the earlier ones, are the basses of little pieces, varying in length from eight to thirty two bars, and containing considerable diversity, both of rhythm and of cadence. In dealing with the various discords, such as the ninths, elevenths, and thirteenths, it has not been thought needful, or. Even desirable, to insert them in every bar. The author's aim has been to show how they could be introduced easily and naturally, as a composer might use them in the course of a piece. The rarer discords will, therefore, be much seldomer met with in these exercises than those which in actual practice are more commonly employed. Book The Elements of Harmony and Musical Composition Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Elements of Harmony and Musical Composition Classic Reprint written by Karl Merz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-09 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Harmony and Musical Composition The upper lines represent the black keys, the lower the white keys. It will be observed that the upper keys have derived their names from the lower by adding sharps or flats, and that each of the upper has two names. For this reason the names of the lower keys are called principal names, while those of the upper keys are called derived or intermediate names. In using sharps and flats it may however so happen that the white keys also have derived names. Thus, for instance, by placing sharps before E and B, the white keys of F and C, are no longer called such but are rec ognized as E sharp and B sharp. In the same manner by placing flats be fore C and F, the two white keys of E and B are no longer called such, but are recognized as C flat and F flat.
