Book excerpt: From the song of Moses on the shore of the Red Sea, to the hymn at the close of our Lord’s first communion, the singing of psalms, hymns and spiritual songs is an essential part of worship for God’s people. In the wisdom of the Glorious Creator, God created man in his image, which included a voice – a uniquely human instrument capable of producing melody. And so, our Lord delights in worship with the voice of praise. From the psalms composed by David on the grassy hillsides of Bethlehem, to the thunderous chorus of “Holy! Holy! Holy!” offered by the seraphim in the throne room of heaven, expressions of singing in worship are evident. And notably, Zephaniah declared the Lord rejoices in singing Himself: “The LORD thy God in the midst of thee is mighty; he will save, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rest in his love, he will joy over thee with singing.” (Zephaniah 3:17). Truly, God’s people rejoice in songs of praise through the ages. By singing Psalms in the early church, in quiet whispers of praise in dens and caves of the earth during persecution, singing praises to our Lord endures. In recent centuries, times of revival and despair alike have sown seeds of creativity, and hymns of praise blossomed and bloomed. As such, visionary men like Elder Lee Hanks, saw fit to collect hymns, true to God’s word in sentiment, and place them in hymnbook form to use in worship. To commemorate the 100th year of the Old School Hymnal, with hearts set on the glory of God, and enveloped by our rich history of worship in song, we the members of the newly restructured, non-profit Old School Hymnal Foundation Board, humbly present to you the Centennial Edition. In 1920, the founding members of the 1st edition presented a compilation of beloved hymns. In updating the hymnal, we prayerfully labored to honor their focus, endeavoring to maintain treasured, long-standing hymns, while also offering new compositions. We believe the Lord blessed us to remain true to scripture and honor Him with the words and melodies selected. In following the footsteps of our forefathers in hymnody, we echo the words of Elders Monsees and Pittman, in the preface to the 3rd edition, as we tried to include “the best old songs, and some of the new good ones...” In recent years, the Holy Spirit has blessed the creation of new hymns, born from the souls of redeemed children of God, moved and affected by the influence of grace. In honoring the spirit of past editions, and striving to obey the unction of the Holy Spirit, we are united in the desire to share some new songs. Having begun in the fall of 2019, and concluded in the midst of uncertain times, we believe a Providential blessing is in the timing of this effort. As unprecedented upheaval and abject fear prevails, we are compelled to present a point of light to push back against the darkness. While angry, dispirited voices reach a fever pitch, as the vitriolic squawk of malicious accusations command our attention, amidst the din of hard speeches and great swelling words, our prayer is that a different sound rises above the fray. In Christian homes, among congregations of Spirit-led worship, and from hearts of weary sinners, may songs of praise and voices of worship rise to adorn and adore the worthy name of Jesus. Book excerpt: Hans Memling's God the Father with Singing and Music-making Angels formed the upper register of an enormous polyptych painted for the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria la Real in Najera, Spain. The three large panel paintings are undoubtedly among the most monumental works of early Netherlandish painting. Since 1895 they have belonged to the collection of the Royal Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp (KMSKA), where a team of conservators and scholars have devoted themselves in recent years to their complex conservation. To mark the completion of this project, the KMSKA organized a symposium in March 2017 in cooperation with the University of Antwerp. This latest volume in the Me Fecit series publishes the contributions presented on that occasion. Their wide-ranging themes include the commissioning and iconography of the panels, their acquisition by the museum, the depicted vestments and what the work has to tell us about fifteenth-century musical practice. Close attention is paid to technical aspects such as the materials and the painting technique used for the panels, Memling's underdrawing, the frames, and the conservation treatment - not least the oxalate-containing layer that posed the greatest challenge. There is a musical aspect to the project too: precise replicas have been made of the depicted instruments, which were then used to perform fifteenth-century compositions with playing techniques inferred from the paintings. Combining the sound of Tin Pan Alley with gospel and blues sensibilities, the Orioles saw their first hit reach #13 on the pop charts, thus introducing the nation to vocal rhythm & blues and paving the way for the most successful groups of the 1950s. In the first scholarly treatment of this influential musical genre, Stuart Goosman chronicles the Orioles' story and that of myriad other black vocal groups in the postwar period. A few, like the Orioles, Cardinals, and Swallows from Baltimore and the Clovers from Washington, D.C., established the popularity of vocal rhythm & blues nationally. Dozens of other well-known groups (and hundreds of unknown ones) across the country cut records and performed until about 1960. Record companies initially marketed this music as rhythm & blues; today, group harmony continues to resonate for some as "doo-wop." Focusing in particular on Baltimore and Washington and drawing significantly from oral histories, Group Harmony details the emergence of vocal rhythm & blues groups from black urban neighborhoods. Group harmony was a source of empowerment for young singers, for it provided them with a means of expression and some aspect of control over their lives where there were limited alternatives. Through group harmony, young black males celebrated and musically confounded, when they could not overcome, complex issues of race, separatism, and assimilation during the postwar period. Group harmony also became a significant resource for the popular music industry. Goosman interviews dozens of performers, deejays, and industry professionals to examine the entrepreneurial promise of midcentury popular music and chronicle the convergence of music, place, and business, including the business of records, radio, promotion, and song writing. Featured in the book's account of the black urban roots of rhythm & blues are the recollections of singers from groups such as the Cardinals, Clovers, Dunbar Four, Four Bars of Rhythm, Five Blue Notes, Hi Fis, Plants, Swallows, and many others, including Jimmy McPhail, a well-known Washington vocalist; Deborah Chessler, the manager and songwriter for the original Orioles; Jesse Stone, the writer and arranger from Atlantic Records; Washington radio personality Jackson Lowe; and seminal black deejays Al ("Big Boy") Jefferson, Maurice ("Hot Rod") Hulbert, and Tex Gathings.

The 185 songs in the collection were favorites used in Protestant churches and singing schools, and many were already deeply rooted in American culture by the time of its first publication. The story of the book is the story of a burgeoning nation, with its origins in a St. Louis school (where it was introduced by singing master Allen Carden) and its spread along the Mississippi River and its tributaries. It's said that even Abraham Lincoln and his sweetheart Ann Rutledge sang from The Missouri Harmony at her father's tavern in Illinois. Compilations such as The Missouri Harmony not only helped teach midwesterners to read music but also carried a uniquely American heritage of shaped notes, a system of musical notation that grew out of the singing school movement in eighteenth-century New England. Furthermore, this heritage would be, according to composer Virgil Thomson, "the musical basis of almost everything we make, of Negro spirituals, of cowboy songs, of popular ballads, of blues, of hymns, of doggerel ditties, and all our operas and symphonies." Yet, despite its significance, the tune book was until now unavailable to contemporary choral and church music groups, including the thriving community of shape-note folksingers. This updated and expanded version of Allen D. Carden's 1820 volume now contains more than 300 pages of original and traditional music compositions collected by the St. Louis Shape Note Singers. An introductory text explains and illuminates the shape-note tradition and the history of the book. With this compilation, published nearly two hundred years after its inception, the heritage of a very different, yet ever influential, America thrives, and its songs, rich with our country's history, live on.
