Book Music Analysis in the Nineteenth Century Volume 1 Fugue Form and Style

Download or read book Music Analysis in the Nineteenth Century Volume 1 Fugue Form and Style written by Ian Bent and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-03-17 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book demonstrates, in fascinating diversity, how musicians in the nineteenth century thought about and described music. The analysis of music took many forms (verbal, diagrammatic, tabular, notational, graphic), was pursued for many different purposes (educational, scholarly, theoretical, promotional) and embodied very different approaches. This, the first volume, is concerned with writing on fugue, form and questions of style in the music of Palestrina, Handel, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and Wagner and presents analyses of complete works or movements by the most significant theorists and critics of the century. The analyses are newly translated into English and are introduced and thoroughly annotated by Ian Bent, making this a volume of enormous importance to our understanding of the nature of music reception in the nineteenth century.

Book Pentatonicism from the Eighteenth Century to Debussy

Download or read book Pentatonicism from the Eighteenth Century to Debussy written by Jeremy Day-O'Connell and published by University Rochester Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A generously illustrated examination of pentatonic ("black-key scale") techniques in the context of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Western art-music. Pentatonicism from the Eighteenth Century to Debussy offers the first comprehensive account of a widely recognized aspect of music history: the increasing use of pentatonic ("black-key scale") techniques in nineteenth-century Western art-music. Pentatonicism in nineteenth-century music encompasses hundreds of instances, many of which predate by decades the more famous examples of Debussy and Dvorák. This book weaves together historical commentary with music theory and analysis in order to explain the sources and significance of an important, but hitherto only casually understood, phenomenon. The book introduces several distinct categories of pentatonicpractice -- pastoral, primitive, exotic, religious, and coloristic -- and examines pentatonicism in relationship to changes in the melodic and harmonic sensibility of the time. The text concludes with an additional appendix of over 400 examples, an unprecedented resource demonstrating the individual artistry with which virtually every major nineteenth-century composer (from Schubert, Chopin, and Berlioz to Liszt, Wagner, and Mahler) handled theseemingly "simple" materials of pentatonicism. Jeremy Day-O'Connell is assistant professor of music at Knox College.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harmony: Its Theory and Practice; Additional Exercises No satisfactory reason can possibly be given why harmony exercises should necessarily be (as they certainly are in most books) a mere series of dry chords, mostly in notes of uniform length. An attempt has, therefore, been made in the present work to do for harmony what the late Stephen Heller did so admirably for pianoforte studies - to invest them with musical int'erest, thus cultivating the student's feeling for melody and rhythm, while at the same time giving him an insight into the harmonic relations of the various chords employed. For this purpose, all the exercises, excepting a few of the earlier ones, are the basses of little pieces, varying in length from eight to thirty two bars, and containing considerable diversity, both of rhythm and of cadence. In dealing with the various discords, such as the ninths, elevenths, and thirteenths, it has not been thought needful, or. Even desirable, to insert them in every bar. The author's aim has been to show how they could be introduced easily and naturally, as a composer might use them in the course of a piece. The rarer discords will, therefore, be much seldomer met with in these exercises than those which in actual practice are more commonly employed.
