Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the extended and annotated edition including * an extensive biographical annotation about the author and his life Book I. The treatise opens with a short statement on the subject of the authority of the Evangelists, their number, their order, and the different plans of their narratives. Augustine then prepares for the discussion of the questions relating to their harmony, by joining issue in this book with those who raise a difficulty in the circumstance that Christ has left no writing of His own, or who falsely allege that certain books were composed by Him on the arts of magic. He also meets the objections of those who, in opposition to the evangelical teaching, assert that the disciples of Christ at once ascribe more to their Master than He really was, when they affirmed that He was God, and inculcated what they had not been instructed in by Him, when they interdicted the worship of the gods. Against these antagonists he vindicates the teaching of the Apostles, by appealing to the utterances of the Prophets, and by showing that the God of Israel was to be the sole object of worship, who also, although He was the only Deity to whom acceptance was denied in former times by the Romans, and that for the very reason that He prohibited them from worshipping other gods along with Himself, has now in the end made the Empire of Rome subject to His Name, and among all nations has broken their idols in pieces through the preaching of the Gospel, as He had promised by His prophets that the event should be. Book II. In this book Augustine undertakes an orderly examination of the Gospel according to Matthew, on to the narrative of the Supper, and institutes a comparison between it and the other Gospels by Mark, Luke, and John, with the view of demonstrating a complete harmony between the four Evangelists throughout all these sections. Book III. This book contains a demonstration of the harmony of the Evangelists from the accounts of the Supper on to the end of the Gospel, the narratives given by the several writers being collated, and the whole arranged in one orderly connection. Book IV. This book embraces a discussion of those passages which are peculiar to Mark, Luke, or John.

Book One Lord One People The Unity of the Church in Acts in Its Literary Setting

Download or read book One Lord One People The Unity of the Church in Acts in Its Literary Setting written by Alan Thompson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the Lukan themes of unity and disunity against ancient Greco-Roman and Jewish social and political discourses on concord and discord to better understand the context in which Luke highlights the themes of unity and disunity. The themes of unity and disunity are particularly prominent in ancient discussions of the reigns of rulers, evaluations of laws/constitutions/forms of government, and descriptions of the contrasting effects of unity and disunity in the destruction and preservation of peoples and cities. These themes are grouped under the broad categories of kingship and law, and the preservation and destruction of cities. The book contends that, in the context of its literary setting, the theme of the unity of the church under one Lord in Acts contributes to Lukan Christological claims that Christ is the true king, and Lukan ecclesiological claims that the Christian community is the true people of God.

Book excerpt: In this “compulsively readable exploration of the tangled world of Christian origins” (Publishers Weekly), religious historian James Tabor illuminates the earliest years of Jesus’ teachings before Paul shaped them into the religion we know today. This fascinating examination of the earliest years of Christianity reveals how the man we call St. Paul shaped Christianity as we know it today. Historians know almost nothing about the two decades following the crucifixion of Jesus, when his followers regrouped and began to spread his message. During this time Paul joined the movement and began to preach to the gentiles. Using the oldest Christian documents that we have—the letters of Paul—as well as other early Christian sources, historian and scholar James Tabor reconstructs the origins of Christianity. Tabor shows how Paul separated himself from Peter and James to introduce his own version of Christianity, which would continue to develop independently of the message that Jesus, James, and Peter preached. Paul and Jesus illuminates the fascinating period of history when Christianity was born out of Judaism.

Book excerpt: Experience Paul's world-changing writings in the full, chronological context of his life story--from Pharisee and persecutor of the church to the most influential defender of the gospel of Jesus Christ. "Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ..." So goes Paul's typical introduction, a modest title for one of Christianity's most authoritative figures. Unique among the apostles, Paul was well-educated and well-respected in the Jewish community of the day. His story is one of dramatic conversion and passionate instruction. His life's work was becoming a servant of Jesus Christ. From pastor and teacher Dr. John MacArthur, One Faithful Life is the first-of-its-kind harmony of Paul's message and life. As with One Perfect Life--which weaved the Gospels into the seamless narrative of Jesus' life--One Faithful Life walks us chronologically through the biblical ministry of Paul, tying together background information from the Gospels, the book of Acts, and Paul's epistles to the growing movement of Christ-followers. In this comprehensive storyline of the Apostle Paul's life, you'll find: Verse-by-verse explanations and section introductions from one of the most respected pastor-teachers of our time Introductory commentary of the major themes and purpose of each of Paul's letters A fresh perspective on the enduring truths of the gospel message

Book The Acts of the Apostles Illustrated

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Prolonged Struggle of Supernatural Forces for Creation’s Loyalty as Revealed In— Vol. IV.—The Times and Ministry of the Early Christians —The Acts of the Apostles. Heritage Edition—Over 100 Century-Old Illustrations, 385 pages. This fourth volume—The Acts of the Apostles—covers the experience of the early Christian Church. While the Bible’s book of Acts covers a period of only a little more than three decades, it is filled with important lessons for the church in every age. God clearly indicates that the Christian today shall experience the presence of the same Spirit who came with power at Pentecost and fanned the gospel message into a flame. The acts of the Holy Spirit through Peter and Paul, John and James, and others can be repeated in the modern disciple. The abruptness with which the book of Acts closes is not accidental; it deliberately suggests that the thrilling narrative is unfinished, that the acts of God through the Spirit are to have their sequel throughout the Christian dispensation—each successive generation adding a chapter full of beauty and power to the one that preceded it. Download or read book The Acts of the Apostles written by Ellen Gould White and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017-03-22 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yet another book in the series of theological interpretations of the Seventh Day Adventists, this book cover the time of the apostles from the Great Commission to the visions of John in Revelation and she tells quite a different story about the apostles compared to the rest of her contemporaries since she heavily relies on mystical experience in order to make her theological conclusions. Like her other books this one has been fought against by theologians in all times but helps to make us realize what is God's truth.
