Download or read book Oil and God written by Elie Elhadj and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2018-08-15 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oil and God is an unabashed realpolitik analysis of U.S. oil geopolitics and Saudi Arabia’s symbiotic attachment to Wahhabism. Oil and God contends that oil hegemony is world hegemony. The U.S. has protected the al-Sauds since 1945. Some 35,000 U.S. soldiers are in regional air and naval bases to protect the oil fields and ruling sheikhs. In Washington’s hands, Saudi oil is a non-lethal WMD. Not even the 9/11 atrocities could make Washington punish Riyadh. Oil and God investigates why Iraq was destroyed, why Iran was allowed to dominate Baghdad, and why Shi’ite/Sunni wars continue to burn. Once oil is replaced by green energy, Washington will abandon Riyadh, Saudi cash will dwindle, and Wahhabi terror will diminish.

Book The American Crucible

  • Pages : 694 pages

Download or read book The American Crucible written by Robin Blackburn and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2013-08-06 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Crucible furnishes a vivid and authoritative history of the rise and fall of slavery in the Americas. For over three centuries enslavement promoted the rise of capitalism in the Atlantic world. The New World became the crucible for a succession of fateful experiments in colonization, silver mining, plantation agriculture, racial enslavement, colonial rebellion, slave witness and slave resistance. Slave produce raised up empires, fostered new cultures of consumption and financed the breakthrough to an industrial order. Not until the stirrings of a revolutionary age in the 1780s was there the first public challenge to the ‘peculiar institution’. An anti-slavery alliance then set the scene for great acts of emancipation in Haiti in 1804, Britain in 1833–8, the United States in the 1860s, and Cuba and Brazil in the 1880s. In The American Crucible, Robin Blackburn argues that the anti-slavery movement forged many of the ideals we live by today. ‘The best treatment of slavery in the western hemisphere I know of. I think it should establish itself as a permanent pillar of the literature.’ Eric Hobsbawm

Book Software Evangelism and the Rhetoric of Morality

Download or read book Software Evangelism and the Rhetoric of Morality written by Jennifer Helene Maher and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the layers of meaning encoded in software and the rhetoric surrounding it, this book offers a much-needed perspective on the intersections between software, morality, and politics. In software development culture, evangelism typically denotes a rhetorical practice that aims to convert software developers, as well as non-technical lay users, from one platform to another (e.g., from the operating system Microsoft Windows to Linux). This book argues that software evangelism, like its religious counterpart, must also be understood as constructing moral and political values that extend well beyond the boundaries of the development culture. Unlike previous studies that locate such values in the effects of code in-use or in certain types of code like free and open source (FOSS) software, Maher argues that all code is meaningful beyond its technical, executable functions. To facilitate this analysis, this study builds a theory of evangelism and illustrates this theory at work in the proprietary software industry and FOSS communities. As an example of political liberalism at work at the level of code, these evangelical rhetorics of software construct competing conceptions of what is good that fall within a shared belief in what is just. Maher illustrates how these beliefs in goodness and justice do not always execute in replicable ways, as the different ways of decoding software evangelisms in the contexts of Brazil and China reveal. Demonstrating how software evangelisms exert a transformative force on the world, one comparable in significance to code itself, this book highlights the importance of rhetoric in even the most seemingly a-rhetorical of technical endeavors and foregrounds the crucial need for rhetorical literacy in the digital age.

Book Blessing Over Darkness

Download or read book Blessing Over Darkness written by Pheara (Peter) Am and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2009-03 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pheara (Peter) Am was born in June 1970 in Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, to a family of six. It was a time of the prosperous Khmer Republic, when the Cambodian economy was strong. Am heard mixed political messages as a child; his father believed communism was good, while his uncle repeatedly said that communism was evil. During the United States evacuation from Cambodia, many Cambodian orphans were taken to America. Am and his brother were given the opportunity to leave the country, but their parents refused to let them go. Their father doubted that the Khmer Rouge would take over the country, so the family remained in Cambodia. When the regime did take over the country in April, 1975, senseless violence and killings took place throughout Phnom Penh. Am shares the terrifying memories of his life during the horrific Khmer Rouge regime, his harrowing experiences living under another communist regime, the People's Republic of Kampuchea, and his amazing ability to find forgiveness after peace returned to Cambodia in 1993. Experience the riveting, firsthand accounts of Blessings over Darkness: A Real Life Journey From Darkness to Blessing.
