Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Political Economy The two departments of sociology which have been most systematized are political economy or economics, and poli tics. Of these two, economics is the more capable of being systematized and is the more highly systematized - for reasons to be explained (p. The rest of sociology is as yet only imperfectly systematized. Much material has yet to be collected, and much Classification has yet to be attempted, before any considerable number of fruitful generalizations can be looked for. Economics, we have noticed, is differentiated from general sociology by the fact that the activities which primarily occupy its attention are those which have reference to wealth. Poli tics is distinguished similarly by the reference oi its data to government; but as some human action has reference at the same time to wealth and to government - public finance and factory legislation, for instance, being subjects which relate to both - economies and politics overlap to some extent. This book was released on 2018-07-29 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Lessons in Political Economy This book has been prepared for use in High Schools and Academies. In writing its pages, I have been Well aware that the object sought is the most difficult at which an economist can aim. Whether this effort to reach the minds of pupils of fifteen, sixteen or seventeen years has been successful, will only be learned on actual trial. In preparing a text-book for students in the period of life indicated, I have not thought it necessary to make the work childish. It is no Primer of Political Economy which is here offered but a substantial course of study in this vitally important subject. I can only hope that it will be found that those for whom it has been designed will be able to follow that course to their own satisfaction and with good results. Book A System of Political Economy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A System of Political Economy Classic Reprint written by Arthur M. Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Political Economy It is necessary that I should write a few words, by way of preface, in order that I may if possible prevent any of those misconceptions which the title I have adopted may be apt to create, and lest the reader should suppose that I write as a Political Economist; perhaps a little syllogism, though not an entirely true one, will serve best to explain my object in writing. Those who write a treatise on a subject should first study the subject. Political Economy is a subject, therefore, before writing on it, I should have studied it. Those who have studied it become by reason of their study Free Traders. I am a Protectionist, ergo, I have not studied the subject, and ought not therefore to write upon it. If, then, I do not understand Political Economy, why do I write on it? My object then in writing upon it is not in order that I may elucidate Political Economy, but in order that I may explain by means of it certain philosophical views. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Foundations of Political Economy "England is full of wealth, of multifarious produce, supply for human want in every kind - yet England is dying of inanition. With unabated bounty the land of England blooms and grows; waving with yellow harvests; thick-studded with workshops, industrial implements, with fifteen millions of workers, understood to be the strongest, the cunningest, and the willingest our earth ever had; these men are here, the work they have done, the fruit they have realised is here, abundant, exuberant on every hand of us; and behold some baleful fiat as of Enchantment has gone forth, saying, 'Touch it not, ye master-workers, ye master-idlers;none of you can touch it, no man of you shall be the better for it; this is enchanted fruit.'" - Thomas Carlyle (Past and Present). Download or read book A History of Political Economy Classic Reprint written by John K. Ingram and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Political Economy It is with great pleasure that I embrace the opportunity afforded me by the publishers of Dr. Ingram's "History of Political Economy" to commend the book to the attention of the American public. Dr. Ingram needs no introduction to our students of economics. His work in the Encyclopaedia Britannica has attracted marked attention wherever earnest thinkers are studying the social and economic problems of our time, whether in Europe or America. The present treatise deserves especial notice, as the first serious attempt by a properly qualified English writer to present a view of the progress of economic thought The works of M'Culloch and Twiss on the same subject were of value only because there was nothing else on the same topic. They testify eloquently to the exceedingly primitive state of the history of economic thought and policy which existed in their day. The work of Blanqui, recently translated into English, is rather a history of economic systems (and a poor one even as such) than of economic theories and doctrines. Up to the time of the appearance of the nineteenth volume of the Encyclopedia Britannica there was no essay on the subject in English which could be considered a very valuable one. We now have a treatise which will compare favourably with any work of similar compass in any other language. A still briefer abstract of that paper was inserted in the Report of the Meet ing a, and the paper itself was not printed until June 1866 b. Since writing that paper, I have, over and over again, questioned the truth of my own notions, but without ever finding any reason to doubt their substantial correctness. I have therefore thought it needless to delay any longer submitting the theory to the oriti cism of those who are interested in the progress of Political Economy.
