Book excerpt: From the moment he was born, Harmon Wages has been beating the odds, the scale of which would cause most to throw up their hands and quit. As a Gator at University of Florida, an Atlanta Falcon and an Emmy-nominated TV sportscaster, Wages cleared hurdle after hurdle in his personal quest for excellence. Harmon attributes so much of his life to experiences growing up in the small Jacksonville community of Pinegrove where his dad owned the local grocery store. As a high school quarterback in Jacksonville, one local columnist called him "the best running QB in Florida." Most of his time at University of Florida was in the shadows of Heisman Trophy Winner Steve Spurrier. When Spurrier graduated, a pre-season injury sidelined Wages for the most part and left him undrafted by the NFL. Always faith-based and undaunted, Wages showed up cold at the Atlanta Falcons' tryouts in 1968, won himself a spot, and proceeded to reap accolades and break records for six years until a knee injury sidelined him for good. While his debut as a TV sportscaster was just shy of abysmal, he eventually rose to become sports director and the top-rated sportscaster in Atlanta. At the height of his TV career, Wages was sent to federal prison for drug possession and still, at 76, feels some ramifications of what many say was a set-up. He semi-retired at age 54, lost his mother, entered a period of depression and turned to alcohol. "Rescued" by his 7th grade sweetheart, he hasn't touched a drop in years. This is the story of Harmon Wages, on the bench and off the bench, who saw problems as opportunities and repeatedly overcame obstacles. In his own words, his story is both inspiring and timeless.

Book excerpt: One fall night in TK, Steve Sabol of NFL Films answered the door to see his friend, Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Tim “Rosso” Rossovich, standing there literally on fire. After Sabol knocked Rossovich to the ground and put out the fire, Rosso stood up and (without missing a beat) said, “Sorry, I must have the wrong apartment.” Pro football has been filled with players like this—loose cannons, rebels and trash talkers. Some players are more likeable than others, and some might even be certifiably crazy...yet what perfectly sane athlete signs up to get belted around by 300-pound behemoths for three hours every Sunday? Why Dick Butkus claims his reputation for meanness—which includes biting a referee's finger—was blown way out of proportion How dumping Gatorade on a winning coach became a postseason tradition Who “He Hate Me” was, and exactly why “He” hated him. From sideline spats to touchdown celebrations to draft day tales, 300 Pounds of Attitude reveals the true stories of the most entertaining figures that have played the game of professional football. Book excerpt: “We all like to prove people wrong who say we’re no good,” says the eternally driven Steve Spurrier, the 1966 Heisman Trophy winner and NFL quarterback who took off his helmet, put on his coaching visor, and turned three downtrodden universities into winners. Spurrier’s Fun ’N’ Gun offense at the University of Florida flummoxed defenses and rewrote playbooks across the Southeastern Conference, transforming SEC football into a modern phenomena. Spurrier tells the story of a preacher’s son from the Tennessee hills who has been overwhelming opponents with “ball plays” for nearly six decades. The climax of his storied career is uplifting the University of South Carolina, a school that lost more football games than it won between 1892 and 2005, and was believed for over a century to be cursed. The only Heisman Trophy winner ever to coach another Heisman Trophy Winner, Spurrier dared to enter the “graveyard of coaches” at South Carolina, confront his destiny, and turned the USC Gamecocks into an unlikely winner. Spurrier is the biography of the Ball Coach who has forever changed college football—and its impact on our culture.

Download or read book Uniform Numbers of the NFL written by John Maxymuk and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-02-16 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Football is a game of numbers--fourth and inches, the three-man rush, a two point conversion, first down. Even with the obvious numbers in the statistics, rules and game situations, the players' uniform numbers themselves have become part of professional football and its lore. NFL players, like modern-day gladiators, are fitted head-to-toe in protective gear, obscuring even their faces from their most loyal fans. They have become largely identifiable through their uniform numbers. You cannot conjure up Larry Csonka without seeing the number 39 crashing through the line of scrimmage, or recall Lawrence Taylor without imagining the fear his 56 inspired in opposing quarterbacks. This comprehensive reference work lists all 32 current franchises of the NFL and includes brief team histories, statistics and interesting facts. Each chapter ends with an all-time numerical roster listing the numbers 1 through 99 (in some cases beginning with 00) and everyone, from Hall-of-Famer to replacement player, who has ever worn the corresponding number for that club. Four appendices are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A heartfelt account of the difficulties football players face after they leave the NFL. The NFL is the nation’s most popular sport, but the athletes who make the league rich suffer greatly once they step off the field. In When the Cheering Stops: Life after the NFL, players open up about the adversities they face after retirement. Long after the lights have dimmed on their playing days, NFL players face emotional distress, physical injuries, and cognitive decline, often suffering on their own. Personal interviews with former players reveal that many struggle with finances, finding a second career, addiction, depression, and violence. While success stories are also shared, the unfortunate truth is that there are far more players left hurt and broken after retirement. Written by former Tampa Bay Buccaneers president and founder of the Retired Player Assistance program Gay Culverhouse, this book provides a unique inside perspective on the NFL and the long-term physical and emotional toll playing in the league takes on the players who make it great.
