Book Progress in Nephrology

  • Author : Georges Peters
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-11-11
  • ISBN : 3642879578
  • Pages : 420 pages

Download or read book Progress in Nephrology written by Georges Peters and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume contains the edited proceedings of the Vth Symposium of the "Gesellschaft fiir Nephrologie" held in Lausanne, Switzerland, from September 21 to September 23, 1967. The manuscripts were arranged according to their contents rather than to their titles. An attempt was made to divide the allotted space between different contributors according to the apparent importance or originality of the contributions. Most of the papers submitted were written in either German or a rather inarticulate English, and subsequently, have been translated into English by the editors and their collaborators. The editors are indebted to Mr. R. Darling, student of medicine of the Faculte de Medicine de l'Universite de Lausanne, for reviewing the English translation. Editing was limited to requirements based on form rather than on content. In a few instances, manuscripts which were inadequate in form were accepted because their contents appeared interesting or important. A very few manuscripts were either not submitted or could not be included in the present proceedings, because they did not satisfy the editorial standards. Some papers are published in the present proceedings in abstract form because they have been submitted elsewhere for full publication. The editors' responsibility does not extend to the factual content of the manuscripts. The editors wish to apologize for the long delay in publishing these proceedings, a delay which may be attributed to difficulties in communication and cooperation with various authors.

Book A Companion to Animal Physiology

Download or read book A Companion to Animal Physiology written by C. Richard Taylor and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 1982-04-30 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1982, this book was designed to supplement Knut Schmidt-Nielsen's Animal Physiology. Using Schmidt-Nielsen's comparative approach to the study of animal form function, the text pursues in greater detail topics introduced in Animal Physiology. Like the textbook, the Companion is organised according to major environmental features: oxygen, food and energy, temperature, and water, concluding with a section on movement and structure. The papers brought together in this volume were presented in July 1980 to honour Smith-Nielsen's sixty-fifth birthday, at the Fifth International Conference on Comparative Physiology, held in Sandbjerg, Denmark.

Book Landmark Papers in Nephrology

Download or read book Landmark Papers in Nephrology written by John Feehally and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Landmarks in Nephrology points the reader to some of the seminal observations which have led to the practice of nephrology as we know it today. Twenty areas of nephrology are covered by discrete chapters, with the editors selecting the ten most important papers ever published in that field. These range from observational and experimental studies from the 18th century, which laid the groundwork for our current understanding of the kidney, through to recent randomized controlled clinical trials. The papers also reflect the emergence of nephrology as a speciality in the last fifty years, stimulated particularly by the introduction of renal biopsy and the development of dialysis and transplantation as effective forms of renal replacement therapy. For each paper, there is a succinct commentary which highlights the importance of the work in its historical context, as well as a recommended reading section to encourage the interested reader to explore further. It is of course a near-impossible task to choose only two hundred papers from the whole oeuvre of nephrology. However, these chosen few are undoubtedly among the great landmarks of nephrology, reflecting the varying coincidences of brilliance, persistence, and good fortune which are necessary for progress in medical science. Encompassing the breadth, range and depth of the intellectual journey which precedes us in the development of nephrology, they provide a telling illustration of Sir Isaac Newton's words to Robert Hooke in 1675: 'If I have seen further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants'.

Book Feature Films 1950 1959

Download or read book Feature Films 1950 1959 written by Alan G. Fetrow and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 728 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1950s, television pushed filmmakers toward such processes as CinemaScope and the increasing use of color. Serials and B Westerns, two staples since the silent era, were no longer money-makers and vanished, while the new breed of producers began to challenge the censorship code, bringing an ever-increasing amount of more explicit movies to theaters. From Aaron Slick from Punkin Crick (Paramount, 1952) to Zombies of Mora Tau (Columbia, 1957), this comprehensive work provides full filmographic data on 3,078 American films of the 1950s. Each entry includes full cast and credits, songs, running time, alternate titles and availability on video. The entries conclude with a brief plot description. An appendix lists the award winning films from the decade.

Book The Police Procedural

Download or read book The Police Procedural written by George N. Dove and published by Popular Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the late 1940s and early 1950s a new kind of detective story appeared on the scene. This was a story in which the mystery is solved by regular police detectives, usually working in teams and using ordinary police routines. This kind of narrative is customarily called the "police procedural" story. And it is the subject of this book. Though there has been numberless writers of these stories, there has never been a book of criticism before.

Book Cosmetic and Pharmaceutical Applications of Polymers

Download or read book Cosmetic and Pharmaceutical Applications of Polymers written by T. Cheng and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymers continue to show almost amazing versatility. We have always known that polymers could be used for trinkets, toys and dishes. Now, however, we are no longer surprised to encounter these adaptable mate rials in almost every place we look. We find them in our cars, tools, electronic devices, building materials, etc. The use of polymeric mate rials in medicine is also well documented in previous books by one of the Editors (Gebelein) and by others. Likewise, the use of polymeric mate rials in pharmaceutical applications, especially in controlled release systems, is also well established. Nevertheless, the use of these ubiquitous chemicals is far less ob vious in the field of cosmetics, although modern cosmetic preparations rely heavily on polymers and this trend is certain to increase. This book brings together much of the basic information on polymers in cosmetics and compares this usage with similar applications in pharmaceutical and medical applications. Cosmetics, like medicine and pharmacy, dates back to antiquity. We can find uses of perfumes, balms and ointments in various old books, such as the Bible. For example, the use of ointments and balms is noted more than thirty eight times, and perfumes and related materials are cited at least twenty nine times in the Bible.
