Book excerpt: Most widely known for its adherents chanting “Hare Krishna” and distributing religious literature on the streets of American cities, the Hare Krishna movement was founded in New York City in 1965 by A. C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. Formally known as the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, or ISKCON, it is based on the Hindu Vedic scriptures and is a Western outgrowth of a popular yoga tradition which began in the 16th century. In its first generation ISKCON actively deterred marriage and the nuclear family, denigrated women, and viewed the raising of children as a distraction from devotees' spiritual responsibilities. Yet since the death of its founder in 1977, there has been a growing women’s rights movement and also a highly publicized child abuse scandal. Most strikingly, this movement has transformed into one that now embraces the nuclear family and is more accepting of both women and children, steps taken out of necessity to sustain itself as a religious movement into the next generation. At the same time, it is now struggling to contend with the consequences of its recent outreach into the India-born American Hindu community. Based on three decades of in-depth research and participant observation, Hare Krishna Transformed explores dramatic changes in this new religious movement over the course of two generations from its founding.

When he was 5, his family moved to the Hare Krishna community in Almviks Gård, Sweden, where they settled into a converted storage container with no insulation, running water, or toilet, and an entirely foreign lifestyle that got them up every day at 4 a.m. for temple services and gave them new Sanskrit names. Soon after, Daniel, now Devavrata, and his then 7-year-old sister were enrolled in the community's boarding school. That's when Daniel's nightmare began. Without realizing it, his parents had placed him in the care of a sadistic pedophile teacher, and Daniel spent the next 3 years of his life being sexually and physically assaulted. Threatened and silenced, young Daniel's behavior deteriorated, and his family was asked to leave the community. Daniel and his family moved back to the Hare Krishna temple in Finland, where, after brief attendance at a local public school, Daniel was sent alone to the Hare Krishna boarding school in Mayapur, India. There, Daniel was again subjected to sexual and physical abuse, this time at the hands of older students. My Karma, My Fault takes us through the rest of Daniel's anguished childhood and teenage years, probes his innocent faith and the loss of it, and brings us into his adulthood, where he finally finds normalcy and at least a measure of peace. It took Daniel years to get to the point where he could write this book and two years to compose it. It is not the story of a victim but of one who has survived.

The phenomenon of religious conversion lies at the crossroad of several disciplines. As the title of this book indicates, my own interest in religious conversion is not sociological, historical, nor anthropolog ical. My primary interest is not even in the domain of the psychology of religion. That is, this book is not a comprehensive review of the social psychological factors that shape religious beliefs in general and religious conversions in particular. Rather, my primary interest is in the experience of conversion as an instance of a meaningful, sudden change in the course of individu al lives. Religious conversion is examined in this book prinwrily from the point of view of the psychology of the self. My aim is to elucidate the experience of religious conversion as a change in the self and to raise suggestions for the study of the self that derive from the data on religious conversion. This interest dictated the scope as well as the methods of the present investigation. Namely, I have chosen to study individuals who have indeed changed visibly as a result of their conversion. My inquiry was based on self-report, assuming the importance of the person's own point of view. Finally, my inquiry was semi-clinical, vii viii PREFACE based on the assumption of an underlying structure to the varieties of conversion experiences.
