Book Hardy Fruit Culture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hardy Fruit Culture Classic Reprint written by Charles F. Lawrance and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hardy Fruit Culture The term "fruit tree" conjures up, for many people, the image of a great tree with immense spreading branches and wandering roots. "We have no room for fruit trees," they say, and that is the chief reason why many owners of small gardens do not plant fruit trees. Insecurity of tenure provides another reason - the man who hires his garden on a very short lease does not care to plant trees because he is under the impression that he cannot move them if, and when, he gives up the land. The general belief that fruit trees will not come into bearing until they are ten or twelve years old is another thing which militates against the planting of hardy fruits. It is time that all this misunderstanding was swept away; every one should know that when fruit trees are worked on the right kind of stock, they will take up very little room in the garden, they will come into bearing within two or three years after grafting and, if necessary, they may be lifted and moved even when they have been growing in the same spot for six or eight years. With respect to the last point, it is necessary under existing laws, to obtain the permission of the landlord before planting trees in hired gardens; then the trees may be moved when the tenancy expires. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Fruit Culture: A Treatise on Planting, Growing, Storage, Etc;, Of Hardy Fruits for Market and Private Growers Much interest has been awakened in the country of recent years in the question of the cultivation of fruit; and though the statements of some of its advocates are obviously exaggerated, there can be no doubt that if the subject was better understood and the knowledge properly applied, a considerable portion of the trade, of which foreign growers now reap the advantage, might be kept in the hands of the English cultivator. Book Guide to Hardy Fruits and Ornamentals Classic Reprint

Download or read book Guide to Hardy Fruits and Ornamentals Classic Reprint written by T. J. Dwyer and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-08 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Guide to Hardy Fruits and Ornamentals The author has been constantly associated in every conceivable way with the hardy fruits and ornamental for over thirty years. He has thought, talked and written about them daily during that period; moreover, he has lived in their midst all this time, has handled and cared for them from the bud and scion to the fruit and flower. For some time past he has longed for an opportunity to tell the story that follows. Simple as it is, it is the result of practical experience. In the beginning of this work the author had in mind two principal motives - one to satisfy and gratify a long cherished wish to sit down and write in plain every-day language, a simple, readily understood story, to endeavor to exclude all foreign and unnecessary matter, to be brief and concise, yet to cover all essential matters relating to cultural methods. Still, personal reminiscences have occasionally crept in; they have been irresistible. Hard as I have fought and opposed them, they have at times dominated me, for the time being - luring me away from a well decided plan and purpose. If an apology is needed it is for this infringement on the readers rights. The other motive was to be able to answer more intelligently and practicably the many letters I receive from friends and correspondents on horticultural matters. For some time past it has been a hard and laborious task to answer these letters individually. In the following pages I have tried to anticipate and supply, in a general way, what the average letter for information inquires about. For the possible mistakes and omissions the author asks your kindly consideration. My hope and earnest wish is that the reading of this book will directly or indirectly influence all to grow their own fruit and beautify their home grounds. Book Successful Fruit Culture

Download or read book Successful Fruit Culture written by Samuel T. Maynard and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Successful Fruit Culture: A Practical Guide to the Cultivation and Propagation of Fruits During the past ten or fifteen years great progress has been made in the cultivation and care of our hardy fruits and especially in the varieties grown, the methods of packing, shipping and marketing, and during this time few books have been written which have kept up with this progress. This progress and the knowledge of insect and fungous pests and their destruction has been largely recorded in scientific books and papers from the numerous experiment stations, with little from the practical and practicing fruit growers, and there is a growing need of a condensed work giving, in plain language, a summary of the scientific progress made, together with the practice of the most successful fruit growers in various sections of the country. Especially is this information needed that those just starting out in the business of fruit growing, or the village home owner who wishes to grow a small quantity of fruit for family consumption, may find in a condensed form the information necessary for success. It is, therefore, the aim of the author to make a book that is up to date in every particular and to cover the entire practice of fruit growing from the starting of the seed or cutting to the marketing of the fruit, though in many cases works devoted to special fruits may be more complete. It is written from the standpoint of the practical fruit grower who is striving to make his business profitable by growing the best fruit possible and at the least cost. Book Cyclopedia of Hardy Fruits Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cyclopedia of Hardy Fruits Classic Reprint written by U. P. Hedrick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-09 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cyclopedia of Hardy Fruits The chief' value of a book like this lies in the accuracy of the descriptions and of the determinations of synonyms. Herein the author has had an advantage over the old pomologists, since his connection with a mod ern experiment station, with a large collection of fruits and a good horticultural library, has given him opportunity to describe first hand and pass impartial judgment on varieties, and to go to original sources for names; whereas, the old writers, lacking these modern facilities, were compelled to copy one from the other. With great reluctance, the author abandons a key to varieties of the several hardy fruits. Years of patient labor have not enabled him to produce a key that will work. A variety of any fruit behaves so differently in the sev eral great pomological regions of the continent that a key cannot be made that will be usable for a fruit in all regions. A satisfactory key to varieties of apples for New York does not fit this fruit in Virginia, Iowa, California, or Oregon. About the only constant characters of the apple for all regions of the continent are sweetness and sourness. The color of the flesh is the only constant character of the peach. There are few or no constant char acters in other fruits as they grow in different regions. To arrange varieties alphabetically is unscientific, disorderly, and makes difficult the identification of fruits, but it is the author's belief that they cannot be satisfactorily ar ranged otherwise for a text covering more than one pomological region. Keys to varieties of fruits can be of value only when made for particular regions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
