Book excerpt: This is a series of articles and information about some of the early history and use of Rock Drills. Taken from articles that originally appeared between 1862 & 1920 in the Mining & Scientific Press , this information details the various types of rock drilling equipment used to drill the tunnels, mines, roads and rocks that stood in the way of progress. It also reviews the technical information that identified why some drills were preferred over others, and detailed information on operations and working details of the equipment.

Book Rock Drills

Download or read book Rock Drills written by Eustace M. Weston and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Rock Drills: Design, Construction, and Use In presenting this collection of essays on rock drills, I make no claim to have treated the subjects exhaustively. Rock drills have formed the subject of numerous articles in the technical press. Various authors have dealt with the subject; but only incidentally and as a branch of other subjects. I know of no book that will, in the first place, give a description of the leading modem makes of English, Australian, and American drills of both piston and hammer types, or give such details of their actual use in metalliferous mines as would enable a novice to approach them with some previous knowledge; and, at the same time, assist the engineer and mine manager to choose machines most suited to his particular needs and to maintain and work them at their highest efficiency. This is my excuse for attempting such a task, while engaged in other mining work. I have not hesitated to reprint much of the writing of others, always, I hope, with due acknowledgment. Where the facts were stated concisely and clearly I saw no object in transcribing. I had much help from H. P. Gillette's excellent book, C. LeNeve Foster's and other works on mining. I have borrowed largely from proceedings of scientific societies and from A. and Z. Daw's exhaustive work on Blasting Rock. Many thanks are due to manufacturers for much help. I have tried to write without bias in comparing the merits of various machines and devices, and the book is not an advertisement for any particular drill. I have not given much space to either rotary or gasoline drills as they scarcely come within the scope of the book. My apology to my critics, who will doubtless find many omissions in the book, is, that it is a collection of notes that the author himself would have been very pleased to have had in book form when recently selecting and working rock drills. My chief qualification for writing this book is, that I have had to earn my living by using many of the machines described, and more recently in superintending rock-drilling operations. Book Drilling and Blasting of Rocks

Download or read book Drilling and Blasting of Rocks written by E. Lopez Jimeno and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rock breakage with explosives has existed since the seventeenth century when black powder came into use in mining. Since then it has progressed from the invention of dynamite to the use of heavy ANFO. During the past two decades, there have been numerous technical contributions which have brought a better understanding of rock fragmentation with explosives, an improvement in drilling equipment and a noticeable evolution in the development of new explosives and blasting accessories. The Geomining Technological Institute of Spain (ITCE), aware of this progress and of the importance which the breakage process has acquired in mining and civil engineering projects, has ordered the publication of Drilling and Blasting of Rocks. The purpose of this Handbook is to give basic knowledge of the drilling systems, the types of available explosives and the accessories and the parameters that intervene in blast designing, whether controllable or not; at the same time the objectives and contents contribute to improved safety in mining. The Handbook is meant for all professionals who are involved with explosives in mining operations and civil engineering projects, as well as for students of technical schools.
