Download or read book Hardship Greed and Sorrow written by Devorah Romanek and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Civil War, New Mexico Territory endured painful years of hardship and ongoing strife. During this turbulent period, a U.S. military officer stationed in the territory assembled an album of photographs, a series of still shots taken by one or more anonymous photographers. Now, some 150 years later, Hardship, Greed, and Sorrow reproduces the anonymous officer’s “souvenir album” in its totality. Offering an important glimpse of the American Southwest in the mid-1860s, the book opens with a thoughtful foreword by Jennifer Nez Denetdale, who considers the varied and lingering effects that settlement, conquest, and nineteenth-century photography had on the Apaches and Navajos. In her insightful introduction accompanying the photographs, curator and scholar Devorah Romanek places the photographs in historical context and explains their unusual provenance. As she points out, the 1866 album integrates a number of important themes in connection to the Civil War and Reconstruction periods, including the French intervention in New Mexico and the internment of Navajos at the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation. The story of the album’s provenance reads like a mystery: some loose ends remain untied and some questions remain unanswered. In addition to containing what may be the earliest extant photographs of Navajo Indians, the album features both studio and field images of U.S. Army officers, Mexican politicians, and various sites throughout New Mexico. According to Romanek, a number of the album’s photographs have appeared in other publications but with scant attention to their original context or purpose. This compelling book reveals what we know about the collection, its compiler, and the photographer—or photographers—who captured such a fraught and complex moment in the history of the American Southwest.
Download or read book Live Hopefully written by Lenya Heitzig and published by David C Cook. This book was released on 2018-01-01 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This all-new 20-minutes-a-day study of Nehemiah reminds readers that with God’s help, one person who is ready to do the impossible can change the world. Hope is not wishful thinking. It is a confident expectation for the future. Nehemiah knew how to live with true hope. After boldly requesting permission from the king to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem after the Babylonian exile, he restored the city and called his people back to God. Despite opposition on all sides, Nehemiah saw God transform a cup-bearer into a contractor, ruins into a city, and a wayward people into followers of God. As Bible teacher Lenya Heitzig reminds readers in this new Fresh Life study, God calls them to live boldly with a hope that only He can give.
Download or read book Collections Management as Critical Museum Practice written by Cara Krmpotich and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2024-07-22 with total page 550 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a common misconception that collections management in museums is a set of rote procedures or technical practices that follow universal standards of best practice. This volume recognises collections management as a political, critical and social project, involving considerable intellectual labour that often goes unacknowledged within institutions and in the fields of museum and heritage studies. Collections Management as Critical Museum Practice brings into focus the knowledges, value systems, ethics and workplace pragmatics that are foundational for this work. Rather than engaging solely with cultural modifications, such as Indigenous care practices, the book presents local knowledge of place and material which is relevant to how collections are managed and cared for worldwide. Through discussion of varied collection types, management activities and professional roles, contributors develop a contextualised reflexive practice for how core collections management standards are conceptualised, negotiated and enacted. Chapters span national museums in Brazil and Uganda to community-led heritage work in Malaysia and Canada; they explore complexities of numbering, digitisation and description alongside the realities of climate change, global pandemics and natural disasters. The book offers a new definition of collections management, travelling from what is done to care for collections, to what is done to care for collections and their users. Rather than ‘use’ being an end goal, it emerges as a starting point to rethink collections work.

Download or read book Barahin e Ahmadiyya Part IV written by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad and published by Islam International Publications Ltd. This book was released on 1884-12-13 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as) of Qadian claimed to be the same Promised Messiah and Mahdi that the Holy Prophet Muhammad(sas) prophesied would come to rejuvenate Islam and restore its original lustre. During his early life, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad(as) saw a dream in which he handed a book of his own authorship to the Holy Prophet(sas). As soon as the book touched the Holy Prophet’s blessed hand, it transformed into a beautiful, honey-filled fruit which was then used to revive a dead person lying nearby. The Promised Messiah(as) was inspired with the following interpretation: Allah the Almighty then put it in my mind that the dead person in my dream was Islam and that Allah the Almighty would revive it at my hands through the spiritual power of the Holy Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him. It is this very book – Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya – which is to be instrumental in revitalizing Islam in the latter days in accordance with the grand prophecy of the Holy Prophet(sas). Its subject matter is of universal importance and, as such, it will prove to be a source of lasting value for all readers. This significance of Barahin-e-Ahmadiyya cannot be overstated.

The messenger of good thoughts and actions brings happiness; and the messenger of bad thoughts and actions brings sadness, thus Good=Happiness and Bad=Sadness. Hence, we continue to sway constantly from a state of happiness to the other state of sadness. This book brings to light the reasons that lead to happiness and the ones that lead to sadness, thus helping a being in making a conscious choice of correcting one's deeds to attain perennial happiness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book Premchand and The Arab World is an attempt that states that Munshi Premchand’s literal work holds an exclusive position in Indian literature as well as in world literature. Even eighty-six years of his death, the discussions and research on Premchand and his achievements through his literary work are not only in the department of Hindi, Urdu, English, and Arabic of Indian Universities but also in several universities of the Arab World. We have tried to ensure that the cultural, political, and social imports of his work are not neglected. We have attempted to bring out its cultural and moral significance. The primary stress in the rest of the study is on a close analysis of the individual short stories and novels, respecting their integrity and autonomy as works of art owing to space limitations.
