Book excerpt: Children today are going through a lot—they are busy with school, involved in extracurricular activities, and trying to navigate the world of COVID and other concerns. Teachers and parents are busy too—with work, school, and parenting activities. How will they have the time to teach valuable skills such as manners and respect to children? These are “soft skills”; the skills necessary to work with others and be a respected and valuable citizen in the workplace of tomorrow. Soft Skills for Kids: In Schools, at Home, and Online, 2nd Edition, focuses on ways that teachers and parents can work together to teach soft skills to the children in their lives. This book is not a curriculum program or set of lessons to help children, but rather a series of “teachable moments” in which adults teach strategies to children as they happen. Finally, as the education of children has changed recently due to the pandemic with an increased number of children learning online, this book will be a great resource for how adults can work together to help children learn soft skills—in schools, at home, and online.

Book Soft Skills in Education

Download or read book Soft Skills in Education written by Jaap Scheerens and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-08-25 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the global movement of putting more emphasis on students’ social and emotional development in education. It provides some order in the unstructured multitude of desirable socio-emotional educational objectives and ambitions that have resulted from this movement and builds on a careful conceptual analysis. It starts out by examining the roots of the movement and discusses different emphases. Next it makes use of instructional and psychological constructs and theories to arrive at meaningful categorizations of major domains and types of social-emotional “skills”. One of the key assumptions is that social and emotional attributes are malleable by means of educational interventions. The book reviews available research evidence for this assumption, taking into account psychological studies and meta-analyses. It then creates new evidence based on a new meta-analysis, which concentrated on the effects of educational interventions on skills associated with the conscientiousness factor of the Big5 taxonomy. In the final chapter, the book discusses the implications for educational policy and practice; a discussion in which attention is given to political and ethical questions about the desirability of treating social and emotional attributes as educational goals.

Hansen also explains how the way Alfred Hitchcock filmed Psycho and the 1911 race to become the first explorer to reach the South Pole both illustrate the use of his seven practices. Each chapter “is intended to inspire people to be better workers…and improve their own work performance” (Booklist) with questions and key insights to allow you to assess your own performance and figure out your work strengths, as well as your weaknesses. Once you understand your individual style, there are mini-quizzes, questionnaires, and clear tips to assist you focus on a strategy to become a more productive worker. Book Soft Skills and Hard Values

Download or read book Soft Skills and Hard Values written by Kerry J. Kennedy and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-11-07 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To help researchers, educators and policy makers understand and support the development of 21st-century skills in schools, this edited volume explores the various iterations of "soft" skills with a particular focus on their implications for values and evaluates ways in which "soft skills" and "hard" values can be integrated. Discourse throughout the 21st century has focused on the changing nature of work, the need for new skill sets and the disruptive effects of new technologies. This has been a neo-liberal discourse that subordinated personal and individual needs to the needs of a productive workforce delivering more and more efficiencies linked to higher and higher profits. The solution is often seen to be in the development of a school curriculum that focuses on work-ready skills for an increasingly complex work environment and its demands. Agencies such as OECD and UNESCO highlight the need to link the skills agenda with complementary values. Yet this process is at a very early stage. The proponents of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) for example highlight the impact of new technologies, not just on work but also on the social world. Yet they neglect to explore the values that would be needed in these new disruptive environments. This book takes up that issue and lays out the multiple value systems that are available for this new 21st century world. It is an important resource for policy makers, academics and teachers with responsibility for a new generation.

Soft skills are interpersonal and intra-personal skills and they objectively refer to a term relating to a person's "EQ" (Emotional Intelligence Quotient). This is a 'package' of skills related to personality development that including social skills, communication and language skills, interpersonal habits, assertiveness, friendliness and optimism that demonstrate the relationship with the other. Soft skills remain essential to any person who wants to demonstrate the maturity of thinking and responding to the people and situations. Soft skills are personal skills, which make a person more polished and more successful. Soft skills are part of interpersonal and intra-personal skills that play a crucial role in demonstrating the characterized relationship with the other. Soft skills differentiate a person from the other based on his/her interpersonal relationship within the group or outside of it. Behavioral experts say that there are many soft skills, which need to make our interaction with people or the environment friendly and productive. Another reason for training ourselves in soft skills is that they are not taught in schools or colleges to an extent comparable to the regular academic studies. Soft Skills make you assertive in your approach to your peers or customers. Assertiveness can be defined as the ability to express yourself without being rude or aggressive. The fine-tuning of character is done with the soft skills. Soft skills enable the employee to focus on real time problems and challenges that he/she faces ordinarily at the work place. Soft skills are not those, which are in demand only in work places or with colleagues, or with bosses. It is not that as an employee with a dream to go up on your professional ladder, you should not be demonstrating your soft skills professionally in your workplace or with your peers and superiors. Recognizing the individuality of the other and valuing their perspectives are important qualities of interpersonal relationship. Book Bridging the Soft Skills Gap

Download or read book Bridging the Soft Skills Gap written by Bruce Tulgan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solve the number one problem with today's young workforce—the soft skills gap The number one challenge with today's young talent is a problem hiding in plain sight: the ever-widening soft skills gap. Today's new, young workforce has so much to offer—new technical skills, new ideas, new perspective, new energy. Yet too many of them are held back because of their weak soft skills. Soft skills may be harder to define and measure than hard skills, but they are just as critical. People get hired because of their hard skills but get fired because of their soft skills. Setting a good example or simply telling young workers they need to improve isn't enough, nor is scolding them or pointing out their failings in an annual review. However you can teach the missing basics to today's young talent. Based on more than twenty years of research, Bruce Tulgan, renowned expert on the millennial workforce, offers concrete solutions to help managers teach the missing basics of professionalism, critical thinking, and followership—complete with ninety-two step-by-step lesson plans designed to be highly flexible and easy to use. Tulgan's research and proven approach has show that the key to teaching young people the missing soft skills lies in breaking down critical soft skills into their component parts, concentrating on one small component at a time, with the help of a teaching-style manager. Almost all of the exercises can be done in less than an hour within a team meeting or an extended one-on-one. The exercises are easily modified and customized and can be used as take-home exercises for any individual or group, to guide one-on-one discussions with direct-reports and in the classroom as written exercises or group discussions. Managers—and their young employees—will find themselves returning to their favorite exercises over and over again. One exercise at a time, managers will build up the most important soft skills of their new, young talent. These critical soft skills can make the difference between mediocre and good, between good and great, between great and one of a kind.

Book 10 Things Employers Expect Their Employees to Know

Download or read book 10 Things Employers Expect Their Employees to Know written by Frederick H. Wentz and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-05-01 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This soft skills workbook is an excellent tool for individuals preparing to look for or start new jobs, as well as individuals who are currently working but need to step back and evaluate their performance. It is a practical, helpful guide about acting appropriately and professionally on a job and addresses realities of the working world and how to cope with them, and not just ideal situations. Soft skills are the nontechnical skills and traits that an individual needs to function in the workplace. They include four sets of workplace competencies: oral communication skills, interpersonal and teamwork skills, personal qualities and work ethic, and problem solving and other cognitive skills. Two very important soft skills addressed in this workbook are work attitude and work behavior. Work attitude is the way an employee feels about his or her job and the approach to the job. It is internal and cannot be seen by other employees. A positive work attitude is the ability to carry out job tasks and work assignments with pride. Work behavior is the way an employee does his or her actual job and how the job gets done. It is usually a direct response to his or her work attitude. It can be seen by other employees. A positive work behavior includes the knowledge, hard work, dedication, and skill put into the finished product.

Through case studies from countries in Asia, Latin America, Africa, and Europe, the authors present how education can be approached holistically to foster student happiness and well-being.
